Norma Breitbach
Aug. 18, 1920 - Feb. 20, 2010
Norma Jean Breitbach, 89, of McGregor, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Prairie du Chien
Hospital following an extended illness.
Norma Jean Hessel was born August 18, 1920 at Waukon, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred and
Josephine Howard, Hessel. She graduated form high school in Elkader. She excelled in basketball, and continued to have a love for the sport her entire life. On February 7, 1944 she was
united in marriage to Norbert
Breitbach. They moved to McGregor in 1947 where they raised four children, Dianne, Neil, Jerry and
Deb. Norma worked and retired from 3M in Prairie du Chien.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Breitbach of McGregor; two daughters, Dianne (Robert) Blum of
Holly Ridge, North Carolina and Deb Carney of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Norbert on Dec. 31, 2004 and her son Neil in 1982.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in McGregor.
Friends may call one hour before service at the church. Inurnment will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor.
The Rev. David Zimmer will officiate at the service. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Heiderscheit
August 30, 1927 - February 20, 2010
Phyllis Marie (Imhoff) Heiderscheit passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday.
February 20, 2010, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa.
Phyllis was born on August 30, 1927 to Ignatius and Julia (Sheehan) Imhoff. She was a
ife-long member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married.
She graduated in 1944 from New Albin High School. She then, worked in Rochester, Minn. and Dubuque
Iowa.She married Leonard Heiderscheit on June 14, 1948. They shared over 61 years together and
were blessed with nine children.
Phyllis focused her life on her faith and her family. While Leonard worked outside the home to provide
for their family, Phyllis worked within the home to lovingly nurture their children. She was selfless in her commitment as a wife
and mother. Her greatest joys included praying, having family gatherings, attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities,
cheering on New Albin and Kee High sports teams, delivering treats and surprises to friends, dancing, especially the polka, and
having a full house.
She is survived by her husband; and their beloved children, Michael (Melinda) of Pryor, Okla., Richard (Bebe) of La Crescent,
Minn., Mary (Alan) Orthaus of Lake City, Minn., Julie (Gene) Schultz of Lansing, Iowa, Mark (Kathleen) of New Albin, Iowa, Terry
(Kristin) of Rochester, Minn., Chris (Patty) of Holmen, Wis., Tim (Jill) of New Albin, Iowa and Pat (Janet) of Lansing, Iowa. Also
surviving are twenty-four cherished grandchildren, Alecia, Mollie, Emilie, Elise, Amy, Courtney, McKenze, Gabriel, Quin, Abraham,
David, Christina, Alexander, Donna, Tessie, Luka, Nellie, Evan, Julia, Colin, Coady, Matt, Jonathon, and Ellie; as well as
five treasured great-grandchildren, Lexi, Brennan, Mikey, Logan and Isabella; along with many special nieces and nephews;
and a sister-in-law, Patricia Imhoff Curran and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ruth; husband, Wilbur Mark; and her brothers and their wives, Vincent
and Joyce of Edmund and Mickey, Robert and LuAnn, Lawrence and Rita, and James as well as two infant siblings Francis and
Catherine.
The funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, February 25 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Albin, Iowa. Fr. Daniel
Knipper will officiate at the service.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the New Albin Community Center. Interment will be at the church
cemetery. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing is in charge of arrangements.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the Thornton Manor staff, Dr. Cheri Olson, Donna Mahr and Daria Darling

Joseph Gordon
November 4, 1939 – February 11, 2010
Joseph
David Gordon of McQueeney, Texas, died Feb. 11, 2010 at the age of 70.
Joe was born in Marquette, Iowa. He joined the Air Force, and eventually made Marion, Texas his home. After retiring, he
opened Joe’s Small Engine Repair. He eventually moved to McQueeney, Texas and changed the business name to J&L Services. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He enjoyed
socializing with friends and family. Under his rough exterior, he had a heart as big as
Texas.
Joe is survived by his daughter Lisa Alfaro and her husband Charlie of LaVernia Texas; grandchildren, Kalin Skinner of LaVernia
Texas, Concheast and Tiffeny Koller, Sarah, Josephine and Blake Seward of Nev.; brothers, Fred Gordon (Kathy) of Cedar Rapids
Iowa, Don Gordon (Lee) of Marquette, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Katherine Gordon of Snowhill, Md., and numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Josephine Gordon; wife, Shirley Gordon; sisters, Glenlyn “Jenny” Buehler
and Alice Wheeler; brother, Glen “Bud” Gordon.
Funeral services were on Thursday, February 18 at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, Texas.

Kyle Boland
March 5 - 1984 - February 5, 2010
Kyle Joseph Boland, 25, of Ekalaka, Mont., passed away Friday, February 5, 2010 in a tragic fire in his home in Ekalaka.
Kyle was born, March 5, 1984 to Merle Joseph and Willa Warrington Boland in Prairie du Chien.
Kyle loved hunting, outdoors, his motorcycle, four wheeling and working in the woods. He graduated from Ekalaka High
School in the Class of 2003. He loved more than anything, his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. The
memories will live on forever.
He is survived by his parents, Merle and Willa Boland of Ekalaka, Mont.; his brothers and sisters, Eugene “Bart” and Cecile
Boland of Ekalaka, Mont., Merle John “Onie” (Amy) Boland of Ava, Ill., Arlan Boland of Green Bay and Georgia (Dan) Breeser of
Prairie du Chien; grandfather, Vernon “Ole” Boland; his grandmother, Wilda Warrington; five nieces and nephews, Kaylee
and Kole Boland, Joseph and Jordan Breeser and Grady Boland; his best friend for life, Cody Hegel; and many aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Kyle was preceded in death by one brother, Bubba Boland; his maternal grandfather and his paternal grandmother.
Visitation/Memorial Service will be held at The Old Rossville Store, 851 Volney Road Rossville, Iowa from noon to 3 p.m.
Saturday, February 13, 2010. Burial will be at Rossville Cemetery.

David Kluesner
August 8, 1937 - January 31, 2010
After a extended illness at home, David Kluesner passed away on January 31, 2010 at the Prairie Maison Nursing Home in Prairie du
Chien.
Dave was born August 8, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa. His parents were Leander and Meta Kluesner. Dave graduated from Mar-Mac High
School. On June 19, 1957, he married Nancy Witter of McGregor, Iowa.
While living in Iowa, Dave worked at the McGregor Bank, McGregor Creamery and Weighner’s Ford/Lincoln of Prairie du Chien. In 1967,
Dave moved his family to Thorp, Wis. to work for Thorp Finance later ITT Life and moved with ITT life to Minneapolis, Minn. From there, they
moved to Omaha, Neb. where he was V.P. of Central National Insurance. After a number of years, he relocated back to Thorp, to join
a new corporation, Benchmark Components, as director of sales, where he worked until retirement in 2003. He and Nancy enjoyed their home
on the Mississippi River just north of Lynxville.
They are the parents of Jill (Steve) Anderson of Loda, Ill., Jody (Ron) Romag of Thorp, Wis., Scott (Dawn) Kluesner of Combined
Locks, Wis., Gina (Bill) Krzyzanowski of Neillsville, Wis., Hollie (Mike) O'Neill of Marshfield, Wis. Their grandchildren are Morgan (Doug)
Bonczek, Alyssa (Brad) Conley and Meg Anderson; Nadine, Katie and Kristy Romag; Samantha, Drew and Grant Kluesner; Glenna,
Kelsey and Breanne Krzyzanowski and Amber and Austin O’Neill.
Dave is also survived by his sister Dixie (J.J.) Jackson of Prairie du Chien and one brother, Dennis of Marshalltown, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Dan.
Per Dave's wishes, there will be no visitation or services at this time. A celebration of Dave's life will be at 1 p.m. on July 3, 2010 at
Riverfront Park on St. Feriole Island, Prairie du Chien.
A memorial fund has been established and will be distributed as the family chooses. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Loretta Tesar
January 11, 1937 - January 13, 2010
Loretta I.
Tesar, age 73, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born January 11, 1937, in Monona, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Havlicek)
Lestina. She married Clifford Tesar at St. Bridget’s Church in Postville, Iowa. He preceded her in
death on June 26, 2005.
She was a member of the Parish Council of Catholic Women and worked in the Homebound
Ministry.
Loretta worked in nursing for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed reading, crosswords,
dancing and spending time with family and friends. “She was our center.”
She is survived by a daughter Lori (Paul) Schwarz of Wauzeka, Wis., two sons; Terry (Peggy) and Kevin (Kim) Tesar both
of Prairie du Chien, four sisters; Helen Stickfort of Garnavillo, Iowa, Donna Martie of Monona, Iowa, Marcy Lenth and June
Looney both of Prairie du Chien, four grandchildren Kirk, Nick, Kristian and Kamryn along with a great grandchild, Kadin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers; Raymond, Jimmy, Charlie and Tommy Lestina
along with two sisters; Irene Ambrose and an infant sister Stasia.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 16, 2010 at St. Gabriels Catholic Church with burial in the Calvary
Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.

E. Raymond Sims
April 20, 1920 - January 8, 2010
Rev. E. Raymond Sims, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Prairie du Chien Hospital.
Rev. Sims was born April 20, 1920 in Brazil, Indiana. During his elementary years in school, he organized a band of boys his age who did religious services on school
grounds and on street corners. While in high school, he preached in a closed Methodist church at Lyford, Indiana. He graduated from high school in 1938, preaching his own graduation
sermon. From 1939 to 1941 he attended the Moody Bible Institute and from 1942 to 1944 he was enrolled at the Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago. From 1946-1948 he was pastor of the
Maranatha Baptist Church and was ordained in 1946. In 1949 , he attended Roosevelt University as a charter student and in 1950 he moved to Cincinnati and enrolled in Cincinnati
University. While there he ministered to a Presbyterian church facilitated by his good friend Reverend John Hall.
In 1953 he moved to Cordova, Tennessee, and pastored to another Presbyterian church. He attended Memphis University where he received his BA degree. In 1960 he
studied at Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary and graduated in 1963 with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained to the Deaconate and priesthood at St. James Cathedral in Chicago
in 1963. In 1965 Bishop Halloch of the Milwaukee Diocese assigned him to Holy Trinity at Prairie du Chien and Emanuel Parish at Lancaster and later to St. Barnabas Church at Richland
Center. He eventually took charge of the Episcopal Church at Clermont, Iowa. In
1990 he retired but remained vicar at Holy Trinity until 2003 when Fr. Carson Culver was assigned as a shared priest to Holy Trinity. He remained the priest in
residence and assisted Fr. Culver weekly on Sunday in Prairie du Chien. He served Holy Trinity Church for 45 years.
Fr. Sims was an active member of the Prairie du Chien Community. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge from 1965, served as chaplain, and was given the Mason's
Appreciation award in 1997. In the early 1970's he was appointed to serve on the Crawford County Human services Board of Directors. He served on the FEMA board for many years and for
the past 41 years has given radio talks on Friday mornings on WPRE. He served on the Board for the Handicapped that has grown to be the Opportunity Center, did weekly services at the
nursing home, was chaplain for several handicapped adult group homes, did AA counseling to the youth at Wyalusing Academy, served all his years at Prairie with the local clergy
association. He was a member of The Friends of the Villa Louis, Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, The Prairie du Chien Historical Society, the St. Mary's Society and an
associate of the Society of Julian of Norwich. He was a member of the Kiwanis for 30 years and organized a weekly ecumenical gathering of local clergy. He was made a Canon of the
Milwaukee Diocese by Bishop White at All Saints Cathedral in Milwaukee in 1997, and was the contact person in Prairie du Chien for the Salvation Army from 1970-1993. In 2001 he was
given the Chamber of Commerce Presidential Award and was recognized for his 36 years of service to the community in 2001 by the Clergy Association and the Community of Prairie du
Chien. He has given countless invocations at meetings and gatherings, has been invited to give the blessing at programs of dedication and other civic events, And he has always been
available for counseling, visitations and distribution of the sacraments.
He is survived by three nephews, Orin B. (Ben) Sims, George Sims and Jim Sims; four grand nephews; two grand nieces; eight great-grand nephews; six great grand
nieces; and longtime close friends, Ted and Janet Finn; their daughters and grandchildren; and Craig and Sheri Hamilton and family.
Requiem Mass for Fr. Sims was held 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 220 S. Michigan in Prairie du Chien.The Right Reverend Steve
Miller, Bishop of Milwaukee, officiated at the service. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Prairie du Chien. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given in Fr. Sims name to the Salvation Army, Order of Julian of Norwich and the Prairie du Chien Clergy Association in lieu of flowers.

William Wilker
June 25, 1931 - January 6, 2010
William George Wilker, 78, died Wednesday Jan. 6, 2010, of complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
William was born June 25, 1931, in Volga, Iowa, to William John and Rosena (Lenth) Wilker. He graduated from Volga High School. Oct. 9, 1952, he married his high
school sweetheart, Darlene Nydegger. He enlisted and served in the Korean War as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. Following his time in the service,
William established a dairy farm in Volga and later established Snowflake Dairy Farm in Garnavillo. He and Darlene farmed together and raised their five children.
William was an active member of the Garnavillo community. He served as a member of the Garnavillo School Board from 1970 to 1976. He was also a board member for
Keystone Area Education Association. He was very active in the Clay-Gar American Legion, the Garnavillo Lion’s Club, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene (Nydegger) Wilker; two daughters, Kathleen (Don) Hensen of Ames and Leslie (Paul) Schuhmacher of Evansdale; three sons, Wesley
(Joanne) Wilker of Garnavillo, Michael Wilker of St. Augustine, Fla., and William Fred (Karen) Wilker of Russell; mother-in-law, Alice Andreae of Elkader; eight grandchildren, Will
Hensen of Des Moines, Elizabeth and Abby Hensen of Ames, Ben Wilker of Bettendorf, Emily Wilker of Russell, Christina Wilker of Elkader, Joe (Megan) Wilker and Austin Wilker of
Garnavillo; great-grandchild, Jayden Hensen of Ames; a brother, Vernon (Evelyn) Wilker of Garnavillo; and one sister, Delores (Joe) Spielbauer of Prairie du Chien, Wis.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor with burial at the Clayton Cemetery near Clayton, Iowa with military honors by
Clay-Gar American Legion. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home assisted the family.
Memorials may be made to either St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor or the McGregor Public Library.

Funeral services were held Monday Dec 21, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery in
McGregor.
She is survived three children: Roger (Sue) Henkels of Farmersburg, IA, Virgil Henkels of Dodgeville, WI, Patsy (Rick) Steiber
of Lansing, IA; eight grandchildren: Timothy and Collin Henkels, Ryan, Jeffery, Jeremy and Drew Henkels, Cory and Gary Steiber; several great grand-children/ two brothers: Alfred
(Marjorie) Goldsmith of McGregor, IA, Leo “Duff” Goldsmith of Earlville, IA.
Florence was born Feb 26, 1926 at Earlville, IA to Bernard and Catherine Goldsmith. She attended school and church at Delhi. She married Jerome Henkels November 24,
1954 at Delhi, IA. They farmed in the Luxemburg, IA area for ten years and then near Guttenberg for three years. In 1968 the moved to a farm near McGregor and lived there until their
retirement in 1984.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bernard in 1988; siblings: Matilda, Rita, Nellie, Ada, Helen, Rose, Cecilia “Sis”, Bernard, an infant brother
and an infant sister.

Lorraine Walters
Sept. 9, 1920 - December 23, 2009
Lorraine V. Walters, 89, of McGregor, Iowa died Wednesday Dec. 23, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa following a
brief illness.
Lorraine was born Sep. 9, 1920 in Marquette, Iowa to Bertram and Violet (Goltz) Schott.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Marquette Methodist Church. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1937. Lorraine married Burton Walters, Sr., in Reno,
Nev. on Oct. 2, 1943. They lived in Sausalito, Calif. before returning to Iowa. She worked as a telephone operator in McGregor, Iowa, Norfolk, Va., and Prairie du Chien, until the mid
1960’s. She also worked as a cook at the school, at the McGregor library, secretary for Dr. Smith and worked at the North Iowa Times. Lorraine was a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star and the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years and served as Sunday School Superintendent at the First Congregational Church in McGregor for many years. She enjoyed watching
sports on television and was an avid Chicago Cubs, Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
She is survived by three children, Burton (Donna) Walters, Jr., Richard Walters, and Marsha (Daniel) Bickel all of McGregor, Iowa; four grandchildren, Burton Walters,
III, Terri (Robert) Wall, Jeff and Jenna Bickel; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Curtis Wall; two siblings: Charles (Lora) Schott of Minnetonka, Minn., Donald (Betty) Schott of
Savannah, Ill; two sisters-in-law, Tammy Hazlett of Monona, Iowa and Esther Schott of Hopkinton, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Burton in 1979, and two brothers, Richard and William Schott.
Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at the First Congregational UCC with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor, Iowa.
Bruce Hinkel

Bruce A. Hinkel, 62, of Waukon, Iowa, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, at
Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in La Crosse, Wis. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 2nd, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating.
Bruce A. Hinkel was born on August 6, 1947 in Prairie du Chien, Wis.. He was the son of Richard Albert and Kathryn Ann (Tayek) Hinkel. He grew up in the
Marquette, Iowa, area, was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McGregor, and graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1965. Following high school he signed a contract
to play professional baseball as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He played Triple A ball for part of a season, facing batters like Curt Flood and Roger Maris,
before an elbow injury ended his career. Bruce was a Sergeant in the US Air Force from 1971 until 1974, serving as an operating room special technician. Following his discharge, he
stayed in San Antonio, Tex., for several years and worked in a veterinary hospital. While there he played softball for the Pearl Brewing Company team. His team won the national
championship and Bruce was named the tournament MVP. In 1997 he moved back to Marquette where he worked for the Harmon Speaker Company in Prairie du Chien. Since 2003 he has lived in
Waukon and been working for Heartland Windows.
Bruce was an avid sportsman and in addition to playing ball, he enjoyed golf and fishing. He was a loyal fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Collecting coins and wolf pictures as well as playing cards were some of his other interests. His family and friends knew Bruce as a good-natured and kind man who had a heart of gold
and would be there to help you in a New York minute.
Survivors include his mother, Kathryn Hinkel of Marquette, IA; a brother, Lee (Kymm) Hinkel of Waukon; his fiance, Cherie Ash of Waukon; a nephew, Eric Hinkel of
Breckinridge, CO; 2 nieces, Sarah (Drew) Hager of Waukon and Brooke (Steve) Weighner of Harpers Ferry, IA; 1 great-niece; 5 great-nephews; and his beloved cat, Princess. He is
preceded in death by his father, Richard Hinkel.
Honorary casketbearers were Dennis Mason and Kim Bernatz. Casketbearers were Drew Hager, Steve Weighner, Dan Straate, Frank Goltz, Dennis Kloke, Jim Ranum, Perry
Norton, and Al Nyberg.

Alvin L. Jacobson, 52 ,of McGregor, Iowa, died Saturday, November 7, 2009, from injuries suffered in a fall at his home.
He was born February 23, 1957, in Viroqua, Wis., to Victor and Arlene (Seidel) Jacobson. He attended school at Kee High in Lansing, Iowa. He served in the Army for
three years. Following his discharge he worked for Anderson Colorado Diesel, R&R Motors, and Debush Truck and Diesel for several years.
Alvin then worked in the well drilling business from 1980 to 1987 and later for Nelson Hardwood until 1993. Alvin also worked for Joe Thompson, Clayton County
Recycling and Alter Scrap Processing.
He married Joan Betthauser on December 20, 1996 in Elkader, IA.
Alvin is survived by his wife Joan Betthauser of McGregor, two children: Brandon Betthauser and Jessica Jacobson both of McGregor, grandchild Hailey Lynn Rosa,
his mother Arlene Jacobson of New Albin, Iowa, three siblings: Nancy (Robert) Featherston of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Victoria (James) Baures, Sr. of Lansing, Iowa, Patricia
Miller of Caledonia, Minn, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, November 14 at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor, Iowa with military honors by American Legion, Am Vets, and VFW posts of
McGregor and Marquette, Iowa.

Emma J. Shaw, 59, of McGregor, IA died Tuesday October 20, 2009 at Memorial Hospital in Prairie
du Chien following an almost eight year battle with cancer.
Emma was born October 11, 1950 in Prairie du Chien, to LeRoy and Helen (Knight) Shaw.
She grew up in the Marquette and McGregor area and graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1969.
She worked at the River Queen in McGregor for Mary Diehl for many years and she also owned
the Red Baron in McGregor for many years. Emma enjoyed all her friends and family, and was a very caring and helpful person. She loved playing cards and shooting pool.
Emma is survived by a brother Robert (Linda) Shaw of Marquette, IA, three sisters: Linda (Curt) Noack

William L. Steiner,
81, of Viroqua, WI, formerly of Prairie du Chien, WI died Monday October 19, 2009 at his home in Viroqua.
William was born December 23, 1927 in Prairie du Chien, WI to William C. and Leone (Whitt) Steiner. He graduated from Prairie
High School. He started working for Steiner Brothers Construction at the age of 14. Following high school he served two years in the
Air Force. Following his discharge he returned to Prairie du Chien. Bill married C. Marlene Loney on November 20, 1954 in Prairie
du Chien. He was in the construction business all of his life and was a very good finish carpenter. Bill and Marlene enjoyed traveling
and traveled to many countries.
His great joy and passion was his three granddaughters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both
in Prairie du Chien. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien and one hour prior to
services at the churchHe is survived by three children, Garith (Julie) Steiner and Stephanie Steiner both of Viroqua, WI, Karl Steiner

Reynold Godfried Kann 86, of rural McGregor, died Thursday, October 1, 2009, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital,
Prairie du Chien, Wis.
He was born to Herbert and Ida (Heck) Kann, of rural Guttenberg on August 26, 1923. Reynold received his education in rural
country schools.
Reynold served in the U.S. Army coastal artillery during WWII. Upon his discharge he farmed with his brother, Loren, in rural
McGregor.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Nichols on February 7, 1949, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor. Four children were
born to this union. Reynold and Shirley spent their lives working together on the family’s farm near Spook Cave. Many also
remember Reynold as a bit of a salesman as he spent a number of years selling farm lubricants for Archer Oil to surrounding
farmers.
Survivors include his wife Shirley of rural McGregor; children, Bruce (Linda) Kann of McGregor, Twila (Owen) Dettman of
McGregor, Todd (Sally) Kann of Marquette and Lynn Palas of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Sirena (Wade) Caplinger,
Quinten (Cynthia) Kann, Jason Kann, Sarah Kann (Josh, (fiancé), Jessica Kann (Jeremy, (fiancé), Marti Dettman, Graham Palas
and Garett Palas; eight great-grandchildren, Blue, Toni, Cecilia, Blaise, John, Ella, Bryton, and Grace; two brothers, Herbert
Kann of Guttenberg and Verdus (Sandy) Kann of Wyoming, Minn.; one sister, Mary Parker, of Guttenberg and one sister-in-law,
Antoinette Kann of Marquette.
Reynold was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings, Loren Kann and Donna Nieland; brother-in-laws, Eldon Parker
and Norbert Nieland, and sister-in-law, Grace Kann.
Reynold was a life-long member of the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.
Reynold was an inventor and a tinkerer and his family will attest to many a late evening was lit by the flicker of his arc welder as
he built or modified his farm machinery.
He had a zest for life and a zeal for people. He never met a stranger. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, or as his children will
jokingly remember, “it’s not what you see, but how far you can get,” dancing, listening to polkas, and going out to dinner was one
of his greatest joys. In his later years, a joke and a wink was his normal response to many of life’s ills. He loved to spend time
with his friends and family and he will be dearly missed.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, October 5, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor with the Very
Rev. Richard Gaul as Celebrant.
Interment with Military Honors followed at St. Wenceslas Catholic Cemetery, rural Monona.
Visitation was held on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at Leonard Funeral Home in Monona.

Brent Ronald Blietz, 24,
Monona, Iowa, died Friday, September 11, 2009, in Prairie du Chien, Wis, from
injuries sustained in a work-related accident.
Brent was born on March 26, 1985, Waukon, Iowa, to Rickey
Blietz and Penny (Stouffer) Blietz. He graduated from MFL Mar-Mac High School
with the class of 2003. Brent attended NICC in Calmar, Iowa, for two years
majoring in communications.
Brent was united in marriage to Ashley Schultz on August 23,
2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa. One son, Brodyn Patrick Blietz,
was born to this union.
Brent worked at Moore’s IGA and Spook Cave while in high
school. For the past five years, Brent had been working for the Monona
Greenhouse and Outdoor Creations in Monona. He loved his job and took great
pride in the finished product of his landscaping work. During the winter months,
Brent volunteered countless hours to his boys in the MFL Mar-Mac Wrestling
program as an assistant coach.
Brent enjoyed golfing, softball, fantasy football, bean bags,
running, Chicago Cubs baseball, North Carolina basketball, Iowa football and
wrestling and helping with the chains for the MFL Mar-Mac football program.
Brent loved spending time with his wife, son and all of his
family and friends. He will be deeply missed by the many people who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Ashley Blietz, Monona; his son,
Brodyn Blietz, Monona; father and step-mother, Rick (Laurie) Blietz, McGregor;

Anna Mae Mary Schaefers, 83, of McGregor, IA died Sunday, September 6, 2009 at
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, following a long
illness.
Anna Mae was born October 22, 1925 at Clayton, IA to Xavier
and Mary (Lusher) Schaefers. She spent her entire life in Clayton County where
she was a homemaker and worked on the farm.
She is survived by a brother Leo Schaefers of McGregor; four
sisters, Lucille Schaefers of McGregor, Helen Schaefers of Dubuque, Irene
Petsche of St. Olaf, and Bernice Schaefers of

Patricia A Tiller, 79, of Prairie du Chien passed away
Monday, September 7, 2009 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was
born December 23, 1929 near Bangor, WI, daughter of Harrison and Mary
(Masterson) Mason. She was a graduate of Aquinas High School and later the
State College of LaCrosse. Pat taught at the Eastman Elementary School from
1949 to 1952. She married Franklin Tiller on November 24, 1949 at St.
Wenceslaus Church in LaCrosse, WI. She and her husband owned and operated
Tiller’s Furniture Plaza in Prairie du Chien for the past 59 years. Pat and
Frank enjoyed being the King and Queen of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They
were past recipients of the Chamber of Commerce C. F. LaPointe Award. She was
proud of her membership as Lady Grand Cross in the Equestrian Order of the
Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Frank of Prairie
du Chien, their children, Maj. Sue Tiller of Prairie du Chien, Dr. Mary
(Glenn) Jonas of Cedarburg, Mark Tiller of Prairie du Chien, Michele (Paul)
Karr of Oakville, Ontario, Canada and LtCdr Michael (Sarah) Tiller, US Navy
Surgeon of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Storandt of Onalaska, and
Doris Norris of LaCrescent, MN; along with ten grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Joseph
Michael Tiller; five brothers, John, Joseph, Eugene, William and Lawrence
Mason along with a sister Katherine “Babe” Wolf.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, September 11 at
St. John’s Catholic Church, Msgr. Bernard McGarty officiating, with burial in
the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. An Honor Guard was provided by
the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. In lieu of flowers
memorials are preferred to the Joseph M. Tiller Scholarship Fund at St. John’s
School, 720 S. Wacouta Ave., Prairie du Chien, WI, 53821. Garrity Funeral Home

A. Stuckey 72, of Prairie du Chien, formally of Eastman/Seneca area, died
Saturday September 5, 2009 at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien, WI.
Nancy was born April 7, 1937 in Richland County, WI to Elgie
and Veda (Hardy) Ray. She attended Richland Center Teachers College and
received her teachers certificate and later taught at Wall Ridge School. She
married Charles Stuckey in Richland Center, WI on December 26, 1959. They
farmed on the family farm for many years near Steuben. She later worked for
Homeward Bound for several years.
Nancy was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great
grandmother. She always found the best in all of us and was always here for
phone call or a shoulder to listen to us. She will be greatly missed and
deeply loved by us all.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, husband on May
19, 1989, a daughter Jenny Becwar, one brother and four sisters.
She is survived by four daughters, Sheila (Gary) Roberts of
Steuben, Janet (Dean Hartley) Wagner of Eastman, Sandy (Mike) Krieg of Hudson,
Sherri Stuckey of Prairie du Chien; son-in-law Gary (Tina) Becwar of Boscobel;

Beulah Mae Hazen, 90, of Prairie du Chien, WI died Thursday, August 13, 2009
at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI.
She was born May 31, 1919 in Hannibal, WI to William C. and
Alta (Lemke) Jones. She attended Cosmetology School in Madison, WI. She
married George Hazen on December 5, 1942 in Wauzeka, WI. They moved to upstate
New York while George was in military training. When he was sent overseas,
Beulah moved to Prairie du Chien and lived with an aunt. Following George’s
discharge, they lived in Prairie du Chien the rest of their lives. She worked
for a time at My Ladies Beauty Shop and also at Speck’s IGA. She has been
living in the same home since 1948.
Beulah was active in the United Methodist Church Women’s
group, volunteered for many activities, she and George cared for a flower bed
at St. Feriole Island for years, and she was very generous and helping to her
family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George on
April 8, 2000, daughter Carolyn, and a sister, Ruth Pinkert.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan (Reg) McNutt of Plymouth,
MN; a son, George “Butch” (Julie) Hazen of Kimberly, WI; three grandchildren,
Ryan Hazen, Jason McNutt, Jennifer Boon; two great grandchildren, Allison
McNutt and Owen McNutt; a sister, Peg (Orlyn) Chunat; and a brother, John
Jones, both of Prairie du Chien, WI.
Services were Monday, August 17 at the United Methodist
Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.

Dorothy Moen
Nov. 21 1920 - July 25, 2009
Erma "Dorothy" Moen, 88, formerly of McGregor, died July
25, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.
The former Dorothy Miller was born the third daughter to Carl
and Marguerite (Zohn) Miller November 21, 1920. She graduated from McGregor
High School in 1938. She married Vernon M. Moen on Dec. 14, 1941 in McGregor,
Iowa. After their marriage they moved to California, where Dorothy worked for
Pacific Telephone and H&R Block in the Los Angeles area. She retired in 2008
Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters, Amy
Wright and Edna McGill, and her husband Vernon.
She is survived by three sons, Richard (Jerilyn) Moen of Lake
Havasu City, Ariz.; Gregg (Deborah) Moen of Aqua Dulce, Calif., and Ron
(Janis) Moen of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren; a sister, Meda Weller of McGregor; and brother Earl
Walter Miller of Kilkenny, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was buried
in California.
James H. Utzerath
April 20, 1936 - July 18, 2009
James Utzerath, of Waukesha WI, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the age
of 73.
James was born on April 20, 1936, the son of Harry and Elizabeth (Bergman)
Utzerath. He lived in Indiana and Illinois before moving to Waukesha in 1979.
Jim was self-employed and known for his mechanical talent and expertise and
was generous in sharing this ability.
H is mother's family, the Bergmans, settled in McGregor in the 1800s and over
50 years ago the famiily returned, purchasing a summer cottage on the Heights,
which they have enjoyed these many years.
Jim is survived by his sister Barbara Burton of Arizona, Niece Gail, nephews
Steven and John and their families, cousins Joan Bauer, John Bergman and
Richard Bergman and their families. He is also survived by other relatives and
close friends.
Burial will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery on Friday, July 31 at 1 p.m.

L. Thornton, 59, of Marquette, IA died Friday July 24, 2009 at Memorial
Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI following a long illness.
Richard Leroy was born December 16, 1949 to Leroy and Betty Jean (Broszeit)
Thornton at Waukon, IA. He attended Mar-Mac School and later Wisconsin
Technical College in La Crosse, WI. He worked as a farm laborer for area
farmers. He then worked at the Chrysler Plant in Belvidere, IL for several
years and for the past 30 plus years he has been with Gencor, Bituma-Star in
Marquette, IA. He married Debra Prouty on January 31, 1976 in McGregor, IA.
Dick was involved in the Marquette Fire Department and also served as
assistant chief. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting wood, gardening, and in
his younger years as a pit crew helper in stock car racing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Cory in 1993, his wife Debra in
2004, and a great grandson Jackson Alan Jon Crandall in 2006, and brother in
law Archie Martin in 2009.
He is survived by special friend Karen Tesar; a daughter, Laurie Schroeder
(Stan Heinrich) of Marquette, IA; granddaughter Amanda Cummins (Derek
Crandall) and her mother Kathy Cummins of Milbank, SD; grandson Noah (Amanda)
Heinrich of Protivin, IA; granddaughter Kelsey Heinrich of Cresco, IA; brother
Milo (Janice) Thornton of Eastman, WI; a sister Bev Martin of West Union, IA;

birthday.

Roy Alvin Beckett passed
away on May 27, 2009, in Bremerton, Washington. He was born in McGregor, Iowa,
an area often called the “Little Switzerland of America,” on March 14, 1917,
to parents Jeannette Mary (Adney) and Alvin Samuel Beckett.
After graduating from McGregor High School in 1934 he moved
to Clinton, Iowa, where he was employed by Holland Furnace Co. Moving to the
West Coast, he met and married Barbara Jensen of Monitor, Oregon. They have
two children, Roger Roy and Debra Kay. He worked in the petroleum industry for
36 years (broken by service in the Navy) retiring in 1979 as manager of
Technical Services with Tosco Corp.
He is survived by his children, five grandchildren, and four
great-grandchildren.
A service was held at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton,
Washington, preceded by an hour for viewing and followed by a reception on
June 2, 2009. The service included “Amazing Grace,” played on the bagpipes and
full military honors. Final internment will be with Barbara in the Willamette
National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Edward E. Scherlin, 97, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died
Saturday May 30, 2009 at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis.,
following a long illness.
He is survived by his wife Rosella of Prairie du Chien, Wis.,
and nieces and nephews.
Edward was born November 20, 1911 in Prairie du Chien, Wis.,
to Fred and Nettie (Steiner) Scherlin. He graduated from Prairie du Chien High
School. Edward married Rosella Strauman on May 30, 1940 in Prairie du Chien.
He served in the Navy during WW II, seeing action in the South Pacific.
Following his discharge he returned to Prairie du Chien and worked with his
brother-in-law John Maxwell doing house painting for several years. He later
went to work at HamannÍs Variety Store in Prairie du Chien and worked there
until he retired. Edward enjoyed woodworking and had been married for 69 years
on May 30th, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters:
Millie, Nettie, and Irene, and a brother Fred.
Funeral services were Monday June 1, at Thornburg-Hanson
Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, WI. and burial will be on Friday, June 5,

H. Kramer, 60, of Lansing, IA, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday April 21,
2009.
Philip was born August 29, 1948, in Prairie du Chien to Duane
and Darlene (Benhart) Kramer. He attended school in Prairie du Chien and
graduated from Seneca High School. He served in the Army from August 1967 to
March of 1969. He served in the 1st Air Cav. in Viet Nam. He married Janice
Sutton on November 4, 1969, in Seneca. He worked as a self-employed auto
mechanic in the area and later worked for Petrolane Gas Co. in Prairie du
Chien for 10 years. Later he worked as a lock operator at the Lynxville Lock
and Dam for 18 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dennis,
a sister Tamara Martin, and an infant grandson.
Philip is survived by his wife and friend of 40 years Janice;
three children, Paul (Marlene) Kramer of Prairie du Chien, Wendy (Shay) Gokey
of Seneca, Jill (Jared) Soper of Waukon, IA; five grandchildren, Ryan and
Sierra Kramer, Megan and Levi Gokey, Brent Ziegler; siblings, Linda (David)

Mary Leona Lange died Tuesday April 7, 2009 at the Great River Care Center in
McGregor, IA after a short illness.
Funeral services were held Monday April 13, 2009 at the
Living Faith United Methodist Church' McGregor Center with burial in Pleasant
Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor, Iowa.
She was born on June 14, 1914 to Harry H. Metzger and Sylvia
Lillian (Petrick) Metzger and grew up in the rural Cedar Rapids area. Leona
was the oldest of six children: Sylvia Louise Metzger, John Vernon Metzger,
Harry Dwayne Metzger, Kathryn Ileen Metzger and Glen Louis Metzger.
Leona attended a 9 week course at Coe College to become a
teacher. Her first teaching job, at age 18, was at Rosehill School. Her first
class consisted of 3 students of which two were her brothers. She taught from
September 1932 to December 1934. Leona met Charles Bernard Lange (Chuck) in
the summer of 1931 while she was babysitting for an aunt and Chuck would
deliver groceries. Chuck and Leona were married December 1, 1934 at the First

In 1945 Chuck and Leona moved from Cedar Rapids to McGregor
and worked for Art Hinch at the Hinch Brothers Hardware. They purchased Hinch
Brothers Hardware in 1946, renamed it “McGregor Hardware” and owned and
operated it with sons Dennis and Roger. McGregor Hardware closed its doors in
2001.
Leona was active in her community and her church. She
belonged to the Easter Star for 50 years, the Business and Professional
Women’s Group, the Friendly Neighbors Card Club, the United Methodist Women’s
Group, Church Choir and taught Sunday School for 45 years.
Leona was preceded in death by two sisters Louise Lockwood
(1998), Kathryn Bowen (2008), two brothers Dwayne Metzger (1983), Glen Metzger
(2005), husband Charles Bernard Lange (1968), sons David Allan Lange (1957)
and Dennis Dean Lange (1969) and son-in-law Frank Davies Jr. (1994).
Leona is survived by a daughter M. Joyce (Frank) Davies Jr.
of McGregor, son Charles Roger (Rita) Lange of McGregor, daughter-in-law
Beverly Towle of McGregor, a brother John Metzger of Shellsburg, nine
grandchildren: Cindy (Paul) Ericksen, Cathy (Robyn) Denning, Cari (Peter)
Eggen, Christian (Michelle) Davies, Jeff Lange, David (Jennifer) Lange, Debra

James William (Pete)
Starkey, born to James and Bessie (Knapp) Starkey on May 6, 1929, in Marquette,
Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved family on March 21, 2009.
James grew up in Iowa and graduated from Marquette High
School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1950-56. James married
Ella Streittmatter on April 28, 1955. Together they moved to Washington in 1966.
An avid outdoorsman, James enjoyed hunting and fishing. He
was a gifted handyman and was a perfectionist when it came to his work. By
trade, James was a heavy equipment operator and retired from the local coal
mine.
James and Ella traveled in their R.V. and were “full-timers”
for several years in Yuma, Arizona. James was a people-person and would always
strike up a conversation with folks everywhere they went, resulting in many
friendships. His family describes James as a wonderful, caring, devoted husband,
father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time
with his family.
Surviving James are his wife, Ella, at the family home in Rochester, Wash.; his
children, Debbie (Greg) Ferguson, Tenino, Wash.; Lynne Crossen and her partner,
Marty Leonard, Olympia, Wash.; grandchildren Aman-da Crossen, Olympia Wash.;
Scott and Matthew Ferguson, Tenino, Wash., and his great-grandon, Kayden
Ferguson, Tenino, Wash. Also his brother, Harry Starkey, Bucoda, Wash.; and
sister Jean (Steve) DeLong, Rochester, Wash., and other family members and
friends.
Preceding James in death were his parents, brothers Norman,
Bob, Clifford and Dean Starkey and his sister Dora.
Services were held on March 31, 2009, at Sticklin Funeral
Chapel, Centralia, Wash., with inurnment at Grand Mound Cemetery, Rochester,
Wash.

Julia Darlene McCoy, 76, of
Belvidere, Ill., died Saturday, Feb 21, 2009 in her home. Darlene was born Feb.
8 1933 in McGregor, Iowa, the daughter of Wilbur Le Roy and Julia Marie (Scrogam)
Heaton.
She married Wiltsie E. McCoy on Aug. 17, 1974 in Rockton.
Darlene worked for 17 years for Parson Casket Hardware and was a nurse's aid for
St. Joseph Hospital. She loved her grandchildren, cooking for her family,
reading angel books and taking care of her Yorkie, "Murphy."
She is survived by children Mark (Nancy) Pollock and Julie
(Edward) McCoy, both of Garden Prairie; stepsons, Edward (Julie) McCoy, Dennis
McCoy of Belvidere and Monte McCoy of Illinois; grandchildren, Nicole (Matt)
Rossingnol, Robert (Windy) McCoy, Anne McCoy, Andrew Pollock, Matthew McCoy,;
five great grandchildren; brother Norman Thomas Heaton of Belvidere; sister,
Wanda Brandt of Minnesota; special caregiver and niece Peggy Benson of
Washington. Predeceased by her parents; son, Gregory Pollock; husband, Wiltsie;
brothers, Kenneth, Robert and William; and grandson, Sean McCoy.
Roland E. Carlson
Roland “Swede” Carlson, 78,
formerly of McGregor, died at Northgate Care Center, Waukon following a
lingering illness. Private internment will be at the Giard Cemetery. Hansen
Funeral Home, Waukon, is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three
brothers, Robert Carlson, Buffalo , Minn. , Kenneth Carlson, Wasilla , Alaska,
Otto Carlson, Sandusky , Ohio, two sisters, Norma Bowen of Hugo, Minn., Shirley
Lewis, Curlew Wash., a niece, Sue Olson, and special friends, Bob and Chris
Meyer of McGregor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Evelyn
Carlson of North Branch, Minn., a sister, and four brothers.
Roland was born April 25, 1930 in North Branch, Minn., where
he grew up. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. He served in Korea and Japan
and was a member of the 467th Mortar Battalion during the Korean War. Swede
earned five Bronze Service Stars for his service. Upon his discharge from the
Army, Swede worked as a logger in the state of Washington and more recently
spent many years working on the railroad laying rail. He lived at the Valley
View Apartments in McGregor for the past 13 years.
Swede experienced many tough times growing up and during his
Korean War experience and as a result developed a kind of barrier that kept
people at a distance. Some people got to know Swede and were able to see a man
that had a very soft heart and great sense of humor!

Evelyn M. Picha, age 81, of
Prairie du Chien, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Prairie du Chien
Memorial Hospital.
She was born December 30, 1927, in Harpers Ferry, Iowa,
daughter of Edward and Martha (Wagner) Wachter. She married Kenneth Picha on
November 30, 1960, in Harpers Ferry. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1997.
Together they owned and operated Ken’s Electric until 1983.
Evelyn assisted her son, Richard, with the transition and operation of the
family business right up through 2008.
She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her friends and
family.
She is survived by her son Richard (Sue Anderson) Picha of
Prairie du Chien; a step-son, David Picha of Prairie du Chien; a step-daughter,
Mary (Tom) Brabble of Wilmington, NC; a brother, John (Margaret) Wachter of
Prairie du Chien; a sister, Florence Becwar of Prairie du Chien; two
grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
parents and her husband.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, March 6, 2009, at
11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery
both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 4:00
p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there
will be a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.

Ken was born December 17, 1909 in McGregor to Arthur and
Hilma (Eggen) Durr. He married Naomi Valley in 1930. She preceded him in death
in 1999.
He was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone in McGregor,
Waterloo, Burlington & Davenport for nearly 40 years.
Left to honor his memory is daughter, Joan (Bob) Fulton and
grandchildren, sister, Bettie Frese, brother LeRoy of California. He was
preceded in death by sisters, Ruth, Olive, Norma and a brother, Everett.

Waukon after a short illness. Services were Monday at St. Ann’s St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Harpers Ferry, by Father Louis Trzil. Burial in St. Joseph
Paint Rock Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry. Arrangements were with Hanson Funeral

Woodman, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at his home following a courageous
battle with cancer.
Funeral services were Saturday at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral
Home with burial in Evergreen Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen; a son, Scott (Carrie)
Barker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter Rebecca Barker of Woodman; four
grandchildren, Ethan, Garrett, Maddie, and Brennan; two sisters Ruth Powell of
Wilmington, Calif, and Katharine Holmes of White Bluff, Tenn.; nieces, nephews,
great-nieces and nephews, and a great-great niece. He was preceded in death by
his parents.
Charles was born November 21, 1944, in McGregor, to Charles
and Evalyn (Henry) Barker. He worked for John Deere & Co. for 30 years, first in
Moline, Ill. and then in Dubuque, Iowa.
He married Gwen Veach on September 16, 1968, at Galena, Ill.
They moved to Millville, in 1991 and retired from John Deere in 1997. He then
went to work for Cabela's in Prairie du Chien.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren,
traveling, and was a die-hard Packer fan.

McGregor, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du
Chien, following a long illness.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009. at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor. Military honors were accorded. In lieu of
flowers memorials would be appreciated to McGregor Public Library.
The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor assisted the
family.
He is survived by his wife Darlene; six children, Wayne
(Tina) McCauley of Becker, Minn., Shaunna Lynn Fertig of Des Moines, Iowa, Kevin
(Beverly) Kaiser and Keith (Sheila) Kaiser both of Des Moines, Iowa, Kenneth
(Katie) Kaiser of Ankeny, Iowa, Beverly (David) Wignall of Des Moines, Iowa; 18
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
David was born September 1, 1931, in McGregor, to Cyrus and
Mary (Tschol) McCauley. He served in the Army Signal Corps from 1951 to 1953. He
married Joanne Wycoff, they later divorced.
David worked as an engineer for Northwestern Bell for many
years until his retirement. He married Darlene Jean Drish November 1, 1976. They
moved to McGregor in 1995.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Joelene
Lockner, a grandson, and eight siblings.
Richard Dohse

Richard Paul Dohse, 61,
died Monday, January 26, 2009, at his home in Marquette following a brief battle
with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 41 years, Diane (Hedeman) Dohse; his
son, Christian Dohse and two daughters, Ann Dohse and Laura Dohse; three
brothers, Louis Dohse, Wayne Dohse, and Paul Dohse; two grandchildren Marc Dohse
and Brett Dohse; and many close friends.
He was born, January 8, 1948, and raised in Prairie du Chien.
Richard was the son of Carl and Frances Dohse (Goite).
Richard was a lifelong resident of Marquette and enjoyed the many benefits of
living in such a small, but personable, river town.
In his early years, Richard graduated from the prestigious
Campion College Preparatory School. He worked to pay his way through school and
graduated with many academic achievements. After his graduation in 1966, he met
his wife, Diane Hedeman, at a local dance in the town of Osborne, Iowa, and soon
married in 1967 at the Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien.
In 1968, Richard seized the opportunity to join the Swiss
Valley Farms Company located in Luana, Iowa. Throughout his career, he was often
recognized and honored for his dedication to the company and his hard work as a
Plant Supervisor for their waste water treatment facility.
Richard enjoyed the outdoors and often spent his leisure time
golfing, fishing, gardening, or taking a relaxing cruise on the Mississippi
River with his family and friends. These were all great times in his life and
represent how special Richard was to us all.
There was nothing more important to Richard than family and
friendship. He often said that his greatest moments in life were being married
to his wife, raising his three children, growing up with his brothers, and
spending time with his close friends. He was always willing to lend a helping
hand and listen to those in need. His advice was always well received and
respected by those who knew him. Richard was a shining example of personal
strength and family values.
Although he will always live on in our minds and hearts, he
will be deeply missed by all.A Memorial service was held on Saturday, at 11 a.m.
at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien. Interment was in the
Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor.

John Robert Adney, 97, of
Miles died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at Mercy Living Center North, Clinton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the United
Presbyterian Church, Miles, with the Rev. Bill Warhover officiating. Burial was
in Miles Cemetery. Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, was in charge of
arrangements.
John was born May 5, 1911, to John Alvin and Bertha Russow
Adney in McGregor. He graduated from McGregor High School. John married Edith
Genevieve Gohlman June 4, 1934, in Clinton. She died in 1979.
John worked for the Milwaukee Railroad's Marquette Shop and
the Chicago Northwestern Railroad's Clinton Shop. He spent some years working at
the G.A. Gohlman General Store and John L. Franks Lumber and Feed Store, both in
Miles. John worked at the Savanna Ordnance Depot during World War II as a
munitions handler and explosive operator. He later spent 10 years working with
the University of Iowa, Iowa City, doing geological studies of the region. He
discovered that the Mississippi River wandered through the Preston, Green Island
and Spragueville areas over 10,000 years ago.
John's interests and talents carried him down many different
paths. His true profession and calling in life was a writer, historian and
amateur photographer. Folks all over Iowa and northern Illinois enjoyed his
works for many years. He wrote columns for area newspapers including the North
Iowa Times, the Des Moines Register, and the Cedar Rapids Gazette. He was quoted
by the Quad City Times newspaper in 2005 that he was in his "77th year of column
writing."
John worked on the History of Jackson County and most notably
on railroad history. Some of John's stories include “Hoboes,” “Harvest in
McGregor,” “Advent of the Auto,” “1800s Doctor—Quack or Saint?” and
“Seventeen-Year Cicadas.” He also wrote about the infamous “Al Capone,”
“Victorian Era” and “Political Scandals.”
He is survived by sons, John G. of Marion and Robert of
Clinton; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great
grandson. John was preceded in death by two sisters, a brother and a daughter
in-law.

McGregor, following a sudden illness.

She was preceded in death by a sister Cindy Scarff.
Vickie was born April 1, 1954, in Prairie du Chien, to James
and Beverly (Hill) Young. She attended school in Garnavillo, Iowa. Vickie loved
listening to her music, doing bead work and playing cards.

64, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 at her home in Jasper, Tenn.
Rita was born May 18, 1944 in La Crosse. She was baptized and
confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor. Rita graduated from Mar-Mac
High School in 1961.
She was united in marriage to Jim Carlton on November 24, 1966 in Fallon,
Nevada.
Survivors include one daughter, Denise (Steve) Lawson of
Chickamauga, Georgia; one son, Jimmy (Billie) Carlton of Jasper, Tenn.; four
grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Matthew, Christoffer and David; a sister, Dolly Dryer of
Farmersburg, Iowa; brother-in-law Frank Saddler of Harpers Ferry and nieces and
nephews. Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents, Melvin and
Ann (Mullarkey) DeLong and one sister, Bonnie Saddler.

James Arthur Johnson, 68,
of Elkader, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2008, following a sudden
illness.
Jim was born on July 1, 1940, in Elkader, to Arthur and Donna
(Humphrey) Johnson. He attended Loras College in Dubuque and was in the U.S.
Army for three years, including service in Germany. Jim married Patricia Moody
of McGregor on November 7, 1964. Jim and Pat had one child, Robert, and two
grandchildren, Samuel and Abigail.
Jim ran a successful insurance agency in Elkader for
forty-four years. Along with being in the insurance business, Jim and his
father Art were involved in the financing of the purchase of dairy cows
throughout the Midwest. Jim owned a farm north of Elkader, where he and Pat
resided. He also managed the family farms near St. Olaf with his brother Alan.
Jim loved to go boating, play cards, attend Iowa football games, deer hunting,
golf, travel, especially to Las Vegas, and dine with his friends and family.
Survivors include his son Robert; daughter-in-law Karen;
grandchildren, Sam and Abby all of San Clemente, Calif.; his brother Alan and
sister-in-law Georgana of Elkader. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Pat,
and his parents, Art and Donna Johnson of Elkader.

She is survived by five children, Carole (Roger) Starrett of

Twin Lakes; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; five

Lucille was born February 18, 1922, in Prairie du Chien, to
Charles and Alma (Mohans) Strnad.
She married George Wiswall on June 29, 1940 in Cresco, Iowa.
They lived in Gays Mills for many years before moving to Illinois. George
died September 24, 1979. In her later years Lucille had lived in various
assisted living facilities and for the past five years Lucy has resided at
Willow Point Memory Care in Stoughton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter
Donna, and a brother Charles E. Strnad, Jr.

Michael John Johnson Sr.,
46, Monona, Iowa, died Thursday, October 30, 2008, on Golden Avenue, rural
Farmersburg, Iowa, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Mike was born on May 18, 1962, in Prairie du Chien, Wis., to
John and Maxine (Tayek) Johnson. He graduated from Mar Mac High School,
McGregor, Iowa, in 1980, and attended two years of college in Calmar, Iowa, for
Auto Mechanics.
Mike was united in marriage to Grace Sunnes, on July 23,
1983, at the Waukon Lutheran Church, Waukon, Iowa. Two sons were born to this
union.
Mike worked as a welder for most of his life. He also worked
as a mechanic with Pladsen Motors in Waukon, a fabricator with Bituma in
Marquette, Riley Construction in Ossian and most recently Caterpillar in
Elkader. Mike was also a volunteer firefighter for Marquette for several years.
During his years in high school, Mike worked as a tour guide
for Spook Cave. He enjoyed NASCAR, Bald Eagles, working on cars, darts, boating
on the Mississippi River, hunting and spending time with his family, friends and
his dog, Jesebel.
Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his father, John (Burnita) Johnson, Wauzeka,
Wis.; his mother, Maxine Johnson, Alta Vista; two sons, Michael J. (Barb)
Johnson Jr., Decorah, Craig (Jennifer Imbus) Johnson, Monona; girlfriend, Angie

McGregor. Military honors were accorded at the cemetery.
He is survived by his wife Arlys of McGregor; three sons:

Dennis was born June 13, 1932 in Garnavillo, Iowa to Robert
James and Inez Marie Vivian (Hessel) Denning. He graduated from McGregor High
School in 1950 and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn.
He married Arlys Pagel on June 29, 1952 at the First
Congregational Church in McGregor. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1954.
Following his discharge he worked for the Prairie Spy in Prairie du Chien, Wis.,
from 1954 to 1970. He also repaired equipment on the Surge Route, did carpentry,
and he and Arlys owned and operated a greenhouse. From 1970 until 1996 he taught
career exploration, Co-op, basic electricity, graphic art, introduction to
construction, and photography at MarMac High School. He was a member of the
American Legion, city council, served as mayor, member of the Hook and Ladder,
Pleasant Grove Cemetery board, McGregor Utility Board, and many boards at First
Congregational Church. He was well known for his love of photography and his
photographs are on display from near to far.

Elizabeth “Bette” Moore, 75
of McGregor, died Wednesday October 1, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du
Chien. Following her wishes there will be no services.
The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home assisted the family.
She is survived by daughters, Suzanne ( Jed) Fritsch of
LaCrosse, Sandra (Morris) Weller and Sheila (Harry) Moore both of McGregor; two
sons, Robert Moore of Austin, Texas, Daniel (Sara) Moore of Council Bluffs,
Iowa; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Annabelle Gilbertson
of Dubuque, Iowa, Theresa (Ronald) Bass of Gotham; four brothers, David (Donna)
Duve of Dubuque, Iowa, Joseph (Carol) Duve of Thompson Falls, Mont., Norman
(Rita) Duve and Harvey (Diane) Duve both of Dubuque, Iowa; and several nieces,
nephews, and her fox terrier Earl the Bandit.
Elizabeth Mathilda was born April 28, 1933, in Dubuque, Iowa
to Engelbert and Beatrice (Loeffelholz) Duve. She married Robert “Bob” Moore on
March 31, 1951. They lived in the Chicago, Ill. area until returning to Iowa in
1966. Bette worked at the Quaker Oats Test Kitchen in Chicago, Mar-Mac Schools,
Memorial Hospital, Clayton County Homemakers and the Milwaukee Railroad.
Her trips to town always included a stop at the McGregor
Public Library, the CAP office and the Boat.
She loved reading, cooking, gardening, rummaging, creating
and giving. Her quilts, wall hangings, crocheted hats and scarves, jewelry
trees, and many other handmade items will be treasured. Bette’s stories, sense
of humor, and love will be remembered and greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by a brother John Duve, a sister
Susan Duve, MD, and her husband Robert.

Fred A.
Burckart 80, of Houston, Minn., and formerly of Monona, Iowa, passed away on
Thursday, September 25, 2008 at his home.
Fred was born in rural Monona on April 16, 1928, to Louis
Adam and Ina (Sawvell) Burckart. He married Geneva Ottaway on May 25, 1948 in
Elkader, Iowa. He worked as a foreman for the Milwaukee Railroad retiring after
20 years in 1987.
He is survived by his wife Geneva, his children Victoria
(Michael) Ott of Houston, Minn., Pamela (Ron) Schwanke of Elgin, Iowa, Brenda
(Gerald) Nagel of Viroqua, Wis., Patrick (Ann) Burckart of Waukon, Iowa, Theresa
(Sidney) Horns of Luana, Iowa, Stormy (Jerry) Eglseder of Bellevue, Iowa, Chris
Burckart of Waterloo, Iowa; nineteen grandchildren, twenty two great
grandchildren; his sister Lucille Bollman of Charles City, Iowa and his beloved
dog “Sage”. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter
Diane, and two sons Michael and Donnie.
A Mass Of Christian Burial was on Monday, at St. Peter’s
Catholic Church in Hokah, Minn. The Rev. Joseph Pete officiated. Private family
burial will take place in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Monona, Iowa at a
later date. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is in charge of

Funeral services for Raymond A. Duball, 87, who passed away on Saturday,
August 23 2008, were held Tuesday, August 26 at the Murdoch Linwood Funeral Home in

Ray (Chuck) Duball was born in McGregor December 4, 1920 to
Lottie (McMillan) and Otto Duball.
He is survived by his wife Thelma of 58 years, four children,
Deborah, Larry, David and Tim; five grandchildren, all of Cedar Rapids area and
a sister Dorothy McCormick of Harpers Ferry.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Harold.

Sara Siepmann
Sara Melhop Hazleton
Siepmann died in Austell, Georgia, on August 9, 2008 at the age of 94.
She was born Sara Mehlhop in Dubuque, Iowa. Sara spent her
childhood summers with the Geske extended family (her mother was Sadie Geske) in
McGregor. Her cousin, Fred Huebsch, was former owner/editor of The North Iowa
Times.
She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Carlton College in Minn.,
and married Samuel Hazleton III of Dubuque in 1935.
The Hazletons had three children: Bart of Taos, N.M., Samuel
IV of Diamond Point, N.Y., and Sara (Mrs. Donald Beebe) of Kennesaw, Ga.
Until Samuel’s death in 1983, they had lived in Piedmont,
Calif., Hartsdale and Delmar, N.Y., and Arlington, Va.
Sara Hazleton married Theodore Siepmann of Arlington, Va., in
1986 and continued to live there until his death in 1998. Then she moved to
Austell, Ga.; her home for the last 10 years. Mrs. Siepmann was active in the
Presbyterian Church and the American Red Cross.

Carl Adney
Archie Carl Adney, 96,
McGregor, Iowa, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Prairie Maison Nursing Home,
Prairie du Chien, WI, following a brief illness. Archie was born on December 22,
1911, rural McGregor, Iowa, to Arthur S. and Edna (Love) Adney. He attended
Pleasant Ridge Country School through the eighth grade. Archie left home at the
age of fifteen and worked where ever he could find work to do.
Archie was united in marriage to Adeline Kamp in Oelwein,
Iowa, on October 31, 1933. Five children were born to this union. Archie was a
farmer, pilot, carpenter, hunter, fisherman, wine maker and raised Appaloosa
horses. Archie and Adeline loved traveling and spent many winters in Texas. They
along with their children traveled the United States every year since 1946. He
was a 4-H leader and was actively involved in Clayton County Farm Bureau for
many years as a member and board member.
Survivors include three daughters, June (Bernell) Larson,
McGregor, Myrna Schmelzer, Garnavillo, Sharon (Gene) Peters, Monona; one son,
Allen Adney, McGregor; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren;
eight great great grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Loraine Adney.
Archie was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline, in 1998;
one infant son, Alton; one grandson, Timothy Tangeman; two great grandsons, Ross
and Ryan Wilke; one great granddaughter, Katrina Peters; two sons-in-law, Fred
Tangeman and Gene Schmelzer; one daughter-in-law, LaVerna Adney; four brothers
and four sisters.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 21, 2008, at 10:30
am at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona, Iowa. The Rev. Dennis
Gilbert officiated.
Burial followed in Council Hill Cemetery, rural McGregor,
Iowa.

Lynn M. Noesen, age 54,died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic after a short illness.
Services will be Friday at the Church of the Resurrection,
Dubuque, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery and visitation is
from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Church. The Behr Funeral Home is in charge
of the arrangements. The Parish Wake Service will be said at the Church on
Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Lynn was born July 2, 1954 in Torrington, Wyoming, daughter
of Charles F. and Joanne S. (Loetz) Brooks.
Lynn was a graduate of Mar-Mac High School in McGregor, Iowa
and then attended the University of Northern Iowa and Clarke College.
She married David P. Noesen on January 17, 1976, at St. Mary's Church in
McGregor. Lynn has been employed by Dubuque Community Schools for 31 years and
was currrently working in Learning Resource Center at Eisenhower School. She was
a member of Resurrection Parish. In her spare time, Lynn enjoyed reading and
making crafts. She was especially devoted to her pets. Lynn will be sadly missed
by her family and her school"family".

Robert W. Boeke
Robert W. (Bob) Boeke, of
Ames, died Friday, July 4, 2008, due to complications following heart surgery at
Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
He was born on July 28, 1925 and was raised on the family
farm in Hubbard, Iowa.
He started college at Iowa State in 1943 but left the
following year to learn to be a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He returned to college
after his discharge, where he met and married Roberta (Bobbie) Starbuck on
September 6, 1947.
By 1950, he had completed his education obtaining a Bachelors
degree in General Engineering and a Masters in Industrial Engineering. The
following year he began a 35- year career with John Deere working at a variety
of manufacturing sites in Iowa and Illinois. In 1968, he and his family moved to
Heidelberg, Germany, where he served as head of all Deere operations in Europe,
Africa and the Middle East. Four years later, he returned to Moline serving as
Vice President of manufacturing, farm equipment and consumer products. He joined
the Board of Directors for Deere in 1979 and served as head of the John Deere
Foundation from 1983 until his retirement in 1986. Shortly thereafter, he
started the BB&D (Boeke, Burke & Day) tree farm near Hubbard.
Bob was active in many professional and community
organizations including Sigma Chi at ISU, the ISU Achievement Fund and ISU
Foundation Boards. He served on the Banks of Iowa Board of Directors and was
President of the Iowa Council of the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the American
Society of Quality Control and served as President of the Center School Board in
Ottumwa. He was a President of the Rock Island and Scott Counties United Way and
a member of the Board at the Herbert Hoover Library Association. Following
retirement, he became very involved at the Collegiate Presbyterian Church in
Ames. He was active in the Rotary International and participated in the Ames-Enzan,
Japan, Sister City Program. Bob was a member of the Upper Mississippi Yacht and
Boat Club where he held the title of Commodore (in jest).
Bob was recognized for his achievements with the ISU Alumni
Recognition Medal, and he was especially proud of the Anson Marston Award from
ISU for achievement in engineering.
Bob loved his family. He was exceedingly generous and loyal.
He especially loved flying and traveling; hanging out at McGregor and on the
Mississippi itself, trolling through the backwaters, observing wildlife and
nature in general. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh.
He is survived by his wife Bobbie, daughters Lee Boeke Burke
(John) of Neenah, Wis., Linda Boeke Day (Wayne) of Des Moines, and son John
(Kim) of Ankeny. His grandchildren include Elizabeth Boeke of Bloomington, Ill.
Michael and Stephanie Boeke Day of Des Moines, Erin and Kelsey Boeke Burke in
Minneapolis, soon to be Austin, Tex., and San Francisco, respectively.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth
Boeke, his sisters Ernestine Wiechman and Mary Michaelson, and an infant
brother, along with his infant daughter Beth.
Audrey A. Whipka
Audrey E. Whipka, 85, of Davenport,
Iowa, passed away peacefully Friday, June 20, 2008 at her home, surrounded by
her family. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 24th
at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Entombment will be
in Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport, Iowa.
The former Audrey E. McGowen was born October 29, 1922 in
Marquette, Iowa, the daughter of William and Bell Singelton McGowen. She
married Melvin A. Whipka on February 18, 1961. She retired from Oscar
Mayer after 27 years, where she was a Union Steward. After leaving Oscar Mayer,
she became a Shaklee supervisor and had her business in her home for 28 years.
Because of her seminars and lectures with Shaklee, she was awarded an honorary
degree from Coe College, Cedar Rapids.
She was a very active member of St. Anthony’s Church,
Davenport, and would deliver meals and Holy Communion to the elderly. She
was also the president of the Catholic Women’s League (Daughters of Isabella).
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Melvin;
daughters, Nancy (Bill) Bolton of Marquette, Iowa and Lori Martinaz of
Davenport; sons, William (Judy) Sawvell and Jerry Sawvell, both of Alabama; nine
beloved grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her parents, six sisters, five brothers, and two grandsons, David
Bolton and Troy Sawvell.

Edward A. Hamann, Jr., 65,
of Marquette, Iowa, died Wednesday May 21, 2008, at Franciscan-Skemp Health care
in La Crosse, Wis., following a long illness.
Funeral services were held Sunday May 25, 2008, at First
Lutheran Church rural McGregor, with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor
at a later date.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Marquette, Iowa;
daughter Tammy (Loral) Hare of Prairie du Chien, Wis., son Brian (April) Hamann
of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, five grandchildren: Matthew and Caitlin Hare, Justin,
Adam, Jarrett Hamann, one great granddaughter Lily Howe; one brother Robert
Hamann of Marquette, Iowa, two sisters, Carolyn Weipert and Gloria Bird both of
Prairie du Chien, Wis.
` He was preceded in death by an infant son Jeffrey and his
parents.Edward was born November 3, 1942, in Elkader, Iowa to Edward and Juniver
(Bruehahn) Hamann. He attended school at Mar Mac. He married Marilyn Strnad on
October 26, 1963, at St. Gabriel Church in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Edward drove
truck for Prairie Sand & Gravel for 32 years. Edward was an avid duck hunter and
also enjoyed fishing and any outdoors activities. He especially enjoyed spending
time with his grandchildren and taught them how to hunt.
Isabel Moses
Isabel Margaret Ferguson
Moses, 82, Monona, Iowa, died Sunday, May 04, 2008, at Winneshiek Medical
Center, Decorah, Iowa, following a brief illness. Isabel was born on November
10, 1925, McGregor, Iowa, to Robert and Fanny (Demo) Ferguson. She graduated
from Marquette High School in 1943. Isabel also graduated from Elkader Junior
College in 1945, where she obtained her teachers certificate. She taught
Elementary Education for a number of years in the area.
Isabel was united in
marriage to William A. Moses on April 17, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua. Five children were born to this union. Isabel and William purchased
their first farm in 1948 where they raised their children. In 1976, Isabel and
William moved off the farm. Isabel then pursued and earned her Home Health Aid
Certificate and worked as a Home Health Aid until 1990. In 1994, she received
the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for Project Head Start. She enjoyed
traveling, gardening, playing bingo and weaving. Isabel was a loving wife and a
wonderful mother to five children, seventeen grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her
husband of sixty-two years, William; four children, Joanne Moses Lewis,
Chesapeake, Va., Robert (Sheryl) Moses, Monona, Thomas (Karen) Moses, Monona,
Byron (Brenda) Moses, Monona; daughter-in-law, Amy Moses, Luana; sixteen
grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Isabel was preceded in death by
her parents; one son, Bruce Moses; two sisters, Edith Miller and Ruth Moreland;
one brother, Harley Ferguson and one granddaughter, Jessie Moses.
Following the burial,
everyone is invited back to the church for dinner and fellowship. Funeral
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at 11:00 am at Living Faith
United Methodist Parish, Monona. The Rev. Dennis Gilbert will officiate.
Burial will follow in the
Monona City Cemetery, Monona.

Marion I. Haltom
Marion I. Haltom, 89, of McGregor, Iowa, died Friday April
18, 2008, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa, following a short
illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 21, 2008, at St.
Mary Catholic Church with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor.
She is survived by a daughter Sandy (Frank) McMillin of
McGregor; two granddaughters„Rebecca (the late Brent) Hackett of Harpers Ferry,
Iowa, Sarah (Jim) Whitney of Marquette, Iowa; her great grandchildren Brittney,
Danielle, Regan and Haley Hackett, Riley and Aedan Whitney, three
step-great-grandchildren Daryl, Corey and Brad Whitney, niece Shirley Beckel of
Rochester, Minn., and her great nieces and nephews, all who had a special place
in her heart.
Marion was born August 30, 1918, in McGregor, Iowa, to Adam
and Helena (Miller) Davies. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1936. She
worked at the Ben Franklin in McGregor, later moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and then
Iowa Falls. She married Lee Haltom on August 19, 1954. They moved to Marquette,
Iowa, and purchased the Burke Hotel and Cafe, which they operated until LeeÍs
retirement. Marion was the lunch room supervisor at McGregor School for many
years. She later went to work at the Marquette Cafe where she worked for several
years.
Marion was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, active in
the Guild, Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary in Marquette and
belonged to card and coffee groups. She loved her family, grandchildren, and her
many friends.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lee, two
sisters, one brother, and a grandson in law Brent Hackett.
