The Prairie du Chien girls soccer team took their first win on the home field against Galena Thursday afternoon 2-1.
"The game started out again with overcast skies but that didn't take the spirit out of both teams.  It was an evenly challenged match and both teams showed their skills," said Coach Linda Shihata.  "The last time these two teams met they ended the match in a tie and the Lady Hawks were determined not to let that happen again or let the Galena team take the win.  I am really proud of their efforts and now they have the fire in their belly to win again."

Galena got six shots on goal but PdC goalie Jillian Steimke only let one get past her in the first half. Jillian credits her strong defensive line  for holding the number of shots to such a minimum.

PdC tracksters compete at River Valley Invitational
FLASH! There was no need to look up into the sky to see the lightning Friday night at the River Valley Invitational. If you wanted to see a flash before your eyes all you needed to do is keep your eyes near ground level on the spectacle of what was happening during the track meet. Sure there were two weather delays, but those could not overpower what the Prairie du Chien Track and Field Team was doing throughout the night.
For the women, it was another very booming night of competition! We are still making improvements and the athletes are beginning to really show what they are capable of doing. It would just be nice to have a competitive venue with good weather to be able to see where they really are this close to the end of the season. A majority of the conference teams were at River Valley to compete and our team stacked up very nicely against them and the team outcome was positive. There will be many difficult decisions to be made between now and the conference meet and if the women continue to improve and perform we should be one of the top teams, but it will be a tight points race.
Team scores Friday night were: Fennimore 125, Dodgeville/Mineral Point 107, River Valley 98.5, Prairie du Chien 94, Richland Center 93, Lancaster 76, Boscobel 67, North Crawford 35.5.
The women scored in nearly every event making it another night of personal bests and another tie of a school record! In the open running events it was Danielle Steger placing 8th in the 100m dash in 14.0 and Deidre Dillman winning the 200m dash in 27.4. Danielle Stark ran a time of 6:09 in the 1600m run to grab 7th place and then later in the meet getting 6th place in the 3200m run in 12:59. For the field events it was Mollee Key winning the high jump with a vertical leap of 4'10" and Allyssa Wellumson getting 2nd place in the discus with a toss of 105'1".
Every relay team scored Friday night as well: 4X800 for 4th place in 11:27 (D. Stark / S. Thomas / C. Bierman / L. Bierman), 4X200 for 7th place in 2:07.8 (C. Mara / K. Bauer / E. Schultz / A. Rooney), 4X100 for 6th place in 55.9 (C. Mara / M. Key / J. Wilkinson / D. Steger), 4X400 for 6th place in 4:54 (L. Bierman / S. Thomas / E. Schultz / C. Lewis)
There were the double finishers earning team points in events such as the 400m dash with Courtney Lewis racing to fifth place in 1:07.9 and Deidre Dillman getting first in 1:01.3. Dillman also won the 800m run in 2:28.9 followed by Sara Thomas for eighth place with her time of 2:48.0. In the triple jump it was Kaliann Bauer hopping to 28'10.5" for eighth place and Danielle Steger 30'10.5" for fourth place.
All three of the lady long jumpers scored points: Emma Schultz in 7th place with 13'2.75", Courtney Lewis in 5th place with 13'4.5", and Danielle Steger in 4th place with 13'6.75"
In the pole vault there is now a three-way tie for the school record of 8-feet and two of the current record holders are still on the team! Those two have either one or two more years of competition after this season and with the right weather conditions that record should go even higher still this year! That will be another day of celebration! Kaliann Bauer now has made her mark of 8' battling some harsh cross winds on Friday night to place herself in a record holding position. The lady vaulters will be turning themselves up-side-down, literally, to soar to new heights for that honor these next few weeks.
For the Men the team scores were: Fennimore 152.5, Richland Center 123, River Valley 102, Lancaster 90, Dodgeville/Mineral Point 83, Boscobel 56.5, Prairie du Chien 51.5, North Crawford 37.5.

With the less than ideal weather conditions and the rescheduling of meets this 2008 Spring season we will try to get in as many races as possible before the conference meet is upon us. Platteville holds off PdC in soccer
The rain stopped long enough on Thursday night to let the girls soccer team play their match against Platteville. This is the second match out of three that these two teams will meet up. Platteville defeated host Prairie du Chien 12-0 in Southwest Wisconsin Conference girls soccer action Thursday afternoon on St. Feriole Island.
The Prairie girls showed lots of determination and effort, said Coach Linda Shihata.
Platteville scored 7 goals in the first half and 5 in the second half.
The fans were full of spirit and support and offered the Prairie girls a lift as they finished strong against Platteville.
Platteville had 6 corner kicks and Prairie du Chien had 0.
"It's great experience for my girls to play Platteville because it gives them that higher level of competition that challenges their skills and ability. I thought they played tougher and had more control on the ball than the first match in the beginning of the season," said Coach Shihata. "They get better with every match."
Goalie Jillian Steimke worked hard saving 23 shots on goal. The defensive line worked well together to ward off several other attempts at the goal and never gave up.
Getting the ball to the forwards, Anna Stoeffler, Savanna Brandt and Ellen Nelson, the Lady Blackhawks had several breakaways towards the goal but were unable to break through Platteville's defensive line.
Prairie du Chien will travel out of town on Tuesday April 29 to River Valley High School. They then will be back on St Feriole Island on Thursday May 1 against evenly matched Galena High School.

Records fall at Prairie Relays

Sara Thomas runs her leg of the 3200-meter relay at the Prairie Relays Monday afternoon.

Danielle Stark competes in the 3200-meter run at the 55th Prairie Relays Monday afternoon.

The 55th Prairie Relays couldn't have been any better. On Monday, the weather was about as good as anyone could have asked for, the meet ran very smoothly, the athletes put forth some incredible performances, and the spectators were able to soak it all up for just an evening of entertainment. We would like to thank all the people who helped put the meet together and who worked at the meet. Without them we wouldn't be able to host such a quality event and then have the visiting teams and spectators comment, "this was a great meet!"

The Prairie Du Chien track and field athletes stepped forth to present another week of improvements. We had many tracksters achieve season bests, personal bests, school records, and meet records at the Prairie Relays. That kind of accomplishment should be very self rewarding for the team and a motivator to keep moving in a positive direction toward the goal of being at their best for the conference meet.

Meet highlights were seeing some outstanding records being broken. In the triple jump Caitlin Reed of Viroqua hopped 35'1" breaking a 20-year-old record. On the boys side of the triple jump, Drew Sierzant of La Crosse Central made his mark with a leap of 45'11" breaking the old record by more than a foot. The boys 4 X 200 Relay team from Platteville (Oyawiri/Vaclavik/Goffinett/Speis) rounded the track to set the new record in 1:33.10. High jumper, Paul Annear of Richland Center, broke the previous high jump record of 6'6" shared by Jason Denn (Platteville 1993) and Matt Specht (Prairie du Chien 1988). Annear easily cleared the bar at 6'10" and just missed his three attempts at 7-foot, quite exciting to be able to observe.

Our own Deidre Dillman broke two meet records, first breaking her own record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.25. Later in the meet Dillman came from behind in the 800-meter run to win at the finish line by inches. Her time of 2:19.96 breaks the 1975 record of 2:21.6 previously held by Ann Mulrooney. Other team records include Brittany Noble, matched the existing school mark in the pole vault of 8 feet.
