Hawks handle Dodgers
The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks traveled to Dodgeville on Friday, Feb. 12 for an SWC match-up. Conference road wins are always hard to come by,
and the Hawks needed a victory over the Dodgers to stay atop the conference standings with River Valley. The trip to Dodgeville has not been kind to the Blackhawks in recent seasons.
The Blackhawks had not won on the Dodger's home court in nearly 10 seasons. The Hawks were determined to make this year a different story, and the Blackhawks walked away with a
convincing 72-46 win.
The first quarter showed the signs of a tight contest, with both teams shooting at a high percentage. The Hawks closed the quarter with a couple of easy buckets to post a 16-10 lead.
For the Hawks, the game essentially was won in the second frame. The Hawk's full-court pressure produced numerous turnovers which resulted in many quick points. Tanner Roach was a
one-man scoring machine. Roach netted layups off of turnovers and when the Hawks set up their offense, the junior guard tossed in three consecutive three-pointers. When the dust
settled, the Hawks had outscored the Dodgers by a 26-13 margin and led 42-23 heading into the half.
As the second half started, the entire Blackhawks squad made sure the Dodgers would not crawl back into the game. Coach Banasik subbed frequently and all the Blackhawks contributed. The
Hawks outscored their opponents by a 19-12 score and led 61-35 after three quarters.
As the fourth quarter ticked away, both teams traded baskets with the outcome well in hand. Both squads netted 11 points apiece, and the final score read Prairie du Chien 72 and
Dodgeville 46.
The Hawks hit 45 percent from the field (26/58) and 82 percent from the free-throw line (14/17). Dodgeville actually recorded the same overall field goal percentage (45%) as they hit 20
of 30 from two-point range. The difference was the Hawks nailed six of 18 from the three-point line (33%), while the Dodgers connected on just one of 17 (06%). The Dodgers hit only
three of eight from the free throw line (38%). The Blackhawks also out rebounded the Dodgers 31-23.
Tanner Roach's second-quarter scoring spree helped the junior to book 18 points. Roach was three for three in two-point goals, three for six from behind the arc, and three for four from
the foul line. Kyle McCoy matched Roach's scoring output with 18 points of his own. McCoy hit six two-point shots out of 11 attempts. The senior guard nailed a three-pointer and was
three of three from the charity stripe. Senior Cole Lewis returned from an ankle injury, and toughed out an impressive game. The big man posted up and hit seven of 11 shots. Lewis also
netted two free throws for his 14 points. Senior guard Chandler White continued his strong play and was the fourth Blackhawk to hit double figures. The Hawk point guard not only hit the
open man, but created his own scoring opportunities. White hit a two-point field goal, nailed two three-pointers, and dropped in two free throws to record his 10 points. Junior post
player Cody Key has stepped up his offense recently and played another solid game. Key hit three baskets and was a perfect two for two from the line for eight points. Ryan Pedretti and
Jeff Standlie both dropped in a free throw to close out the Hawk scoring.
Chandler White led the Blackhawk offense and dished out 11 assists. Kyle McCoy was credited with three assists and Tanner Roach had two assists.
In spite of limited playing time, Cole Lewis still led the Hawks in rebounding with six boards. Chandler White grabbed five boards while Cody Key, Ryan Pedretti, and Kyle McCoy had four
rebounds. Senior Kenny Ingle came off the bench and grabbed three boards.
Tanner Roach picked off three steals to lead the team in that category. Cody Key had two steals, while White, Lewis, and sophomore Connor Morovits each had a steal.
The Blackhawks' next test is against nonconference foe West Salem. The Hawks will battle the Panthers at Prairie du Chien High School on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
