SHARON KRICKE
Sharon J. Kricke 56, of McGregor, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at her home of
an apparent heart attack. Sharon was born Dec. 8, 1948 in McGregor, to Earl and
Mildred (Leach) Kleinow. She attended Mar-Mac High School. She married John
Kricke on May 16, 1966 in Elkader, Iowa. Sharon was a homemaker and did in-home
work for Monona Wire. Surviving are one son, Daniel John (Peggy) Kricke of
Monona, Iowa; three daughters, Pamela Jean (Joseph) Surdi of St. Petersburg,
Fla., Mary Sue Kricke and Jennifer Lynn (Larry) Pritchard both of McGregor;
three grandchildren; one brother, William (Sherlyn) Kleinow of Lancaster,; one
sister, Karen (Lennie) Pillard of Merillan, Wis., sisters-in-law, Vickie Kleinow
of McGregor, Jane Kleinow of Prairie du Chien, Cathy Goldstein of Minneapolis,
Minn.; brothers-in-law, Michael Kricke of McGregor and Hank Beck of Garber,
Iowa. Services will be Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral
Home in McGregor with burial at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral
home on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m.
REYNOLD COPSEY
Reynold "Don" Copsey 77, of Fennimore, passed away Fri., Dec. 10,
2004, at the Grant Regional Health Care Center in Lancaster. He was born June
20, 1927, in LaCrosse, son of Reynold and Bessie (Bachem) Copsey. He married
Georgia Lawrence on Dec. 3, 1947, at the Ferryville Community Church. He was
self employed as a Cheesemaker for the Mt. Hope Cheese Factory which he operated
with his father and brother Roy from 1950 to 1969. Don also worked as a
Supervisor for Rayovac in Fennimore for 10 years and was a member of the Mt.
Hope Fire Dept. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed horseback riding and square
dancing. He is survived by his wife Georgia of Fennimore, a son Randy Copsey of
Aurora, Colo., a brother Roy (Bev) Copsey of Fennimore, three grandchildren,
Chad, Clint and Cassandra Copsey of Denver, Colo.; two brothers-in-law Paul
(Linda) Lawrence of Rockford, Ill. and Gary (Helen) Lawrence of Westminster,
Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Peggy (Bob) Ketterer of Fennimore and Joyce (Floyd)
Kleven of Eastman. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services
were Monday, Dec. 13, at the United Methodist Church in Fennimore, with Rev.
Duane Andrus officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later
date. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.
FREDERICK BREUER
Frederick W. Breuer, 94, of Bloomington, died Sunday, December 12, 2004, at his
home with his family by his side. He was born Jan. 20, 1910 in rural Glen Haven,
son of Arnold and Anna (Mumm) Breuer. He married Agatha C. Bierman on Nov. 15,
1932 at St. Maryıs Catholic Church in Bloomington. Together they farmed many
years in the Glen Haven Area. They retired to Bloomington in 1976. Surviving are
his wife of 72 years, Agatha, Bloomington; eight children, Janette (Richard)
DuCharme, Wauzeka; Luella (Raymond) Martin, Wauzeka; Joanne (William) Martin,
Bagley; Eugene (Betty) Breuer, Bloomington; Arnold (Sena) Breuer, Patch Grove;
Charlotte Moris, Boscobel; Elaine (Ronald) Moris, Prairie du Chien; and
Sylvester (Sue) Breuer, Glen Haven; 61 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren
and two sisters, Anne Wagner, Glen Haven; and Sister Solano Breuer, Dubuque,
Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Eleanor Klema; two
great-grandchildren; his son-in-law, Gary Moris; his sister, Pauline Crubel; and
his brothers, Leo, Roland Alphonse and Leonard Breuer. Services will be
Thursday, Dec. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Maryıs Catholic Church in Bloomington
with Father Eric Nielsen and Father Hubert Boschert officiating. Burial will be
in Gockel Cemetery, Glen Haven Township. Visitation will be held Wednesday from
3 - 8 p.m. at St. Maryıs Catholic Church in Bloomington, where a 3 p.m. parish
rosary will be held. Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the
church. In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial fund will be established for
St. Maryıs School in Bloomington. The Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington
assisted the family.
JOHN STEGER
John B. Steger, 77, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004,
at his home. He was born July 2, 1927, in Prairie du Chien, son of Andrew and
Katherine (Kindl) Steger. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He married
Catherine Mezera on Oct. 8, 1957, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman. He farmed
his entire life in rural Prairie du Chien. He was an active member of St.
Gabriel's Parish and belonged to the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the
Farm Bureau in which he was a past board member. He is survived by his wife of
47 years Catherine of Prairie du Chien, four sons, Thomas (Rene') of Zumbrota,
Minn., Gregory (Diane) and Robert both of Prairie du Chien and Donald (Wendy) of
Eagan, Minn., a daughter Dee (Dan) Kussmaul of Prairie du Chien, a brother Louis
(Anita) Steger of Prairie du Chien, 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents. A Mass of Christian burial was Monday
at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Rev. James Warosh S.J. officiating, with
burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Military Rites were
accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorials are
preferred to the Prairie Catholic Schools and the Prairie du Chien Memorial
Hospice Program. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.
WILLIAM FOLEY
William "Bill" Foley, 66, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Sat., Dec.
4, 2004, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 22, 1938, in
Crawford County, son of Thomas and Vermilda (Myers) Foley. He married Marian
Neeley on Oct. 22, 1955, in Fennimore. Bill was a well known log buyer for over
40 years. He enjoyed time with his family and friends, touring the midwest
looking for timber, going to the riverboats and casino's. In his younger years
he loved fishing, coon hunting, playing cards, riding horses and camping. He is
survived by his wife Marian of Prairie du Chien; two sons, Rick (Ginny) of
Seneca, and Jeff of Prairie du Chien; three daughters, Sherry Krausse of
Steuben, Shelly (Randy) Weeks of Prairie du Chien and Julie (Brian) Check of
Eastman; his mother Vermilda Foley of Prairie du Chien; two brothers, Pat
(Phyllis) of Seneca, and Jerry (Chris) of Prairie du Chien; a sister Marge
Watters of Boscobel; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his father, two brothers, Bernie and Nick Foley and a
grandson Travis Foley. Bill will forever be remembered for his sense of humor
and always being there for his family and friends. Funeral services will be
Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Doug
Mathison officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du
Chien. Friends may call on Monday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity
Funeral Home.
ELIZABETH MOE
Elizabeth F. Moe, 89, of McGregor, Iowa, died Thursday December 2, 2004, at
Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, following a long illness. Elizabeth was
born December 23, 1914, at the Foster homestead on Pleasant Ridge, rural
McGregor to Warren and Anna (Kleinow) Foster. She attended Mendon No. 1 country
school and graduated from Marquette High School in 1931. She then attended Gregg
Business College in Chicago, graduating in 1933. She was employed by Kemper
Insurance Mutuals for several years. She married Lyle J. Moe on July 18, 1937.
They made their home in Chicago until after WW II. During the war she lived with
her sister Imogene Cross and family in Akron, Ohio, where she was employed by
Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. In 1946 they moved to McGregor, where Lyle
was self-employed and Elizabeth worked for First State Savings Bank and the
North Iowa Times. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she
taught Sunday School and was organist for many years. She also was a member of
the Women of St. Paul, the American Legion Auxiliary, McGregor Historical
Society and McGregor Hospital Auxiliary. Elizabeth is survived by one son,
Warren (Judy) Moe of Burnsville, Minn.; one daughter, Kaaren ( Darryl) Schlitter
of Monona, Iowa; three grandchildren, David (Jenny) Welch of Sioux Falls, S.D.,
Bradley Welch of rural McGregor, Nathan Welch of rural Monona, Iowa; one
great-grandchild Brayden Welch; one sister, Imogene Cross of Germantown, Ohio;
two brothers, Robert Foster of Atlanta, Ga., and Calvin Foster of Ankeny, Iowa
and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband
Lyle and one brother Roger Foster. Funeral services were Monday December 6, at
St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in McGregor, Iowa with burial in Council
Hill Cemetery, rural McGregor. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor
assisted the family.
GORDON SCOTT
Gordon D. Scott, 77, of Austin, Minn. formerly of Bloomington, died Friday, Dec.
3, at the Austin Medical Center in Austin, Minn. He was born April 17, 1927 in
Glen Haven, son of Wilbur and Margaret (Thornton) Scott. He graduated from
Bloomington High School in 1945 and had already enlisted in the U.S. Navy, being
allowed to graduate before reporting to the Great Lakes Naval Station. He served
in the Navy for two years, primarily in the South Pacific area. Upon his
discharge, he attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated in 1950. He was
then employed by the Hormel Company in the Livestock Buying Department. He was
united in marriage to Violet Marie Smith on Sept. 10, 1950 at the United
Methodist Church in Bloomington. During his career with the Hormel Company, he
had buying assignments in Sioux City, Iowa, Winnebago, Minn. and the Buying
Station manager at Madelia, Minn. from 1954 to 1964 when he returned to Austin.
He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Veterans
of Foreign Wars and American Legion and the University of Wisconsin Alumni
Association. Gordon is survived by his wife Violet, of Austin, Minn.; two sons,
Mark (Melissa) Scott and their children, Jacob, Lucas and Olivia of Roseville,
Minn., Douglas (Beverly) and their children, Casey, Marsha and Sarah of
Bloomington; two daughters, DeAnne (Michael) Pietrs and their sons Joshua and
David, of Shoreview, Minn., and Jane (Jeffery) Bawek, Albert Lea, Minn.; two
sisters, Elizabeth (Joe) Wegmann, Bloomington and Alice (Dale) Vogel of
Fennimore and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was
preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law Bradford and Marjorie Scott.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Bloomington United Methodist Church,
Rev. David Leistra officiating with burial in the Union-Lumpkin Cemetery in
Bloomington Township. Friends may call Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. at the Martin Page
Funeral Home in Bloomington and Wednesday one hour prior to services.
KENNETH WAGNER
Kenneth Henry Wagner, 67, Fennimore died Monday morning, Dec. 6, 2004, at St.
Maryıs Hospital in Madison. He was born April 13, 1937 in rural Eastman to J.
Aelred and Rita (DuCharme) Wagner. He married Doreen (Koeller) Wagner May 4,
1985, Potosi. He was married to Mary (Crowley) Bass, 1964 until 1982. Ken was
the first-born of ten children. He attended both the DuCharme and Wagner country
schools. He graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1955. He had a
diverse resume. He was a gas station manager, milk truck driver, County Police
officer, custodian at Southwest Technical College, Credit Union treasurer, 20
years of service as a heating and cooling service technician with H & N
Plumbing and Heating, True Value rental department attendant and a driver for
the Good Samaritan Center. Ken was very devoted to his family, good friends and
his church. He was a long-time member of St. Maryıs Catholic Church where he
volunteered with finances and the Perpetual Adoration. He was a former Lionıs
Club member. He was known for his sense of humor and quickness to lend a helping
hand. He enters heaven with a smile for showing up his sons and son-in-law by
bagging two bucks this deer hunting season. Other ways he enjoyed spending his
time were bowling, playing cards, exploring cyberspace and playing with his
grandchildren. His family has been comforted that they recently were able to
spend special time with him during his trip out east and the Thanksgiving
holiday. His loving guidance and wisdom were always appreciated and will be
dearly missed. Surviving are his wife Doreen Koeller, Fennimore; six children,
Lisa (Dave) Baumgard, Mahtomedi, Minn., Shari (Chris Larson, Menomonie, Joe
(Sharon) Wagner, Oshkosh, Bob Wagner, La Crosse, Sara Wagner, Fennimore, Bill
Wagner, Fennimore; and ;nine grandchildren. Sean and Collin Baumgard, Katelyn,
Alex, Ben and Jacob Larson, and Jonas, Jack and Anna Wagner; Four brothers, Wil
Wagner, Hartford, Conn., Tom (Carolyn) Wagner, Prairie du Chien, Phil (Linda)
Wagner, Cottage Grove, Minn., Ron Wagner, Eastman; five sisters, Eileen (Frank)
Crowley, Prairie du Chien, Edith (Barry) Holmstrom, Madison, Carol Wagner, La

EDWIN REICHMANN
Edwin E. Reichmann, 102, of Wauzeka, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at
Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien. He was born Sept. 24, 1902 in Wauzeka to
Herman and Wilhelmina (Reiter) Reichmann. He was married July 13, 1932 in
Galena, Ill. to Viola Hurda. He was a member of Temsters Union, St. Paulıs
United Methodist Church. He spent most of his life in Wauzeka. He had been
employed at Badger Ordinance Works during WWII. He loved hunting and fishing and
enjoyed the woods and area of the Lower Kickapoo River Valley. He provided his
children with an opportunity to advance through higher education. He is survived
by his wife, Viola Reichmann of Wauzeka, daughter, Marlene Hagen of Madison,
son, Edwin (Darlene) Reichmann of Madison, Al., daughter Pat (Phillip) Dimmer of
Cedarburg, son Victor Reichmann of Viroqua, son Lyle (Karen) Reichmann of
McFarland, son, Walter (Barbara) Reichmann of Wauzeka; 14 grandchildren and 32
great-grandchildren. Edwin was one of a set of triplets, the other two preceded
him in death as infants. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and
three sisters. Services were Sunday, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in
Wauzeka, Pastor Lynn Schreck officiating with burial at the Wauzeka Cemetery.

EVELYN HEISZ
Evelyn M. Heisz, 87, of Prairie du Chien, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at
Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien following a short illness. Evelyn was born
June 8, 1917 at Seneca to Frank and Julia (Foley) Garvey. She attended two years
at the Teachers College in Viroqua, two years at University of Platteville. She
taught school for 20 years retiring from St. Gabrielıs School. She married
Charles H. Heisz on Dec. 26, 1934 at St. Gabrielıs They also farmed in the
Eastman area and were foster parents for 25 children. Surviving are two sons,
Frank (Corrine) Heisz and Ivan (Mary Ann) Heisz both of Prairie du Chien; three
daughters, Mary Catherine Benoy of Reedsburg, Irene (Wayne) Mitchell of Prairie
du Chien, Theresa (Steve) Wetter of Boscobel; one foster son, Bill (Joan) Green
of Foley, Ark. 16 grandchildren, one step-great-granddaughter; four
great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Marie Garvey of Des Moines,
Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles on May 9, 1985,
one brother John Garvey, one sister Peggy Dubert, daughter-in-law Patricia Heisz,
four grandchildren; John, Anne and Mary Benoy, Jan David Heisz, great-grandson
Justin Benoy and nephew John Dubert. Services were Monday at St. Gabrielıs
Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien, with burial in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in
Eastman. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home assisted the family.
LORI PSCHEID
Lori M. (Ahrens) Pscheidt, 46, of Corvallis, Oregon, formerly of Prairie du
Chien passed away at home in her husbandıs arms on Nov. 19, after a six-year
battle with cancer. She graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1976 and
from the UW-Madison in 1981. She married Jay W. Pscheidt in 1980. She loved
working with flowers, and everyone enjoyed walking through her backyard which
was blooming with a variety of beautiful flowers. Surviving are her husband, Jay
and two sons, Jacob and Lucas of Corvallis, Oregon; her mother, Mary Ahrens of
Prairie du Chien; two brothers, John (Jane) Ahrens of Elmhurst, Ill., Rob
(Cathy) Ahrens of Cuba City; three sisters, Vicki (Randy) Goeke of Waterville,
Iowa, Jenni (Ken) Losey of Waukesha, Cindy (Joe) Ostrander of Prairie du Chien
and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her mother-in-law of
Oregon; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law on her husbandıs side. She
was preceded in death by her father, Calvin Ahrens. She will also be missed by
her dog, Mickey, whom she loved very much. The immediate family is having a
private memorial service to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, a
scholarship memorial for her sons college educations has been established.
MARIAN KULLCKA
Marian L. Kullcka (Dobbs) (nee Kisting), 81, died November 15, 2004. She ware
retired from Briggs & Stratton after 30 years of service. She was preceded
in death by her brothers, Donald and Kenneth Kisting, loving mom of Dale Dobbs,
Grandma of Ann Marie (Sam) Puleo and Susan Michelle Dobbs. Great-grandma of
Sammy and Roman Puleo; sister of Beth Herrick and Lester "Gene" (Nancy) Kisting.
Visitation was Friday at Pilgrim Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6817 W. Center
Street, New Berlin. Interment followed at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
ANTHONY CEJKA
Anthony "Tony" J. Cejka, 84, a resident of Living Center West,
formerly of 1037 19th St., S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died at the care center
Friday morning, Nov. 12, 2004, following a lengthy illness. Anthony was born
March 11, 1920 in Creston and moved to Cedar Rapids from Prairie du Chien in
1962. He married Mary L. Harrison on July 8, 1972 in Cedar Rapids. She died Oct.
30, 1985. Tony was employed at Northern Engraving Company in Prairie du Chien
for 22 years. After coming to Cedar Rapids he worked as a serviceman at Altorfer
Machinery Company for 18 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church. Surviving are his friends and caregivers for many
years, Jerry and Sue Reifenstahl, Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his
wife Mary, parents Thomas and Addie (Pesik) Cejka and three brothers Stanley,
Jerome and Joseph Cejka. Services were Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church by Monsignor Karl Glovik with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The
Papich-Kuba Funeral Service assisted the family.
BESS MALVEN
Bess Malven, 98, passed away November 14, 2004, at the Prairie Health Care
Center in Prairie du Chien. This facility had provided care and comfort to her
for the last seven years through the last stages of dementia. Bess was born in
Lamont, Iowa to Albert and Alma (Pierce) Allison on March 30, 1906. She
graduated from the Lamont schools and earned a two year teaching degree from
Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught several years at
rural Fayette County schools and third grade at Lamont. She married Don Malven
on June 15, 1929 at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, Iowa. At that time,
married women were not allowed to teach. She spent the next twenty years or so
as a wife, raising a family of four children and was an active member in the
Manchester, Iowa community. She was involved with the Delaware County Historical
Society, Garden Club, Womenıs Club, and Community Theater. She also helped with
the Manchester Centennial Celebration. During the 1950ıs teacher shortage she
returned to teaching while working on a Bachelors Degree through Upper Iowa
University. She taught in several rural Delaware County schools and also in the
district that later became Maquoketa Valley. She earned her degree in Art
Education from UIU in 1962. Bess taught art at Maquoketa Valley until her
retirement in 1971. She moved to Prairie du Chien in 1979 where she became an
active member in the United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association,
AARP, and Community Theater. Bess is survived by two daughters, Lois (Ron)
Schnoebelen of Chicago, Ill. and Mary Don (Gary) Olson of Prairie du Chien; her
brother, Leland (Marie) Allison of Baraboo; her daughter-in-law, Ruth Malven of
Council Bluffs, Iowa; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandsons and one
great-granddaughter. Also surviving is Sally Malven of Madison, the "Keleny
Kidsıı and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, two sons, James and Craig, and two brothers, Gilbert and Raymond and a
sister Lois, also a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Malven and two grandchildren, Joan
and Jim Malven. Services will be at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church
on Thursday. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at
11 a.m. Committal services will be at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa at 3
p.m. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family.
CLETUS BREUER
Cletus M. Breuer, age 77, of Patch Grove, died Monday, November 15, 2004 at
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born December 24 , 1926, in
Cassville, WI, the son of Peter and Mary (Esser) Breuer. On October 15, 1953, he
married Kathryn O'Shaughnessy at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca. They
farmed in Cassville, and later moved to Patch Grove in 1961. Cletus was employed
at Macke's Stockyard for 19 years. He always helped with farm chores for farmers
in the area, and was also employed at Miniature Precision Components in Prairie
du Chien. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathryn Breuer, Patch Grove;
five children, Michael Breuer, Patch Grove; Suzanne Bockenstedt, Yellville, AR;
Patrick Breuer, Guam; David (Pat) Breuer, Fennimore; and Kevin (Nellie) Breuer,
Kinder, LA; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;
one sister, Dorothy (Donald) Mumm, Bloomington; two sisters-in-law, Hilda Breuer
and Marcella Vondrum, both of Cassville; and many nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Peter, Joseph, Christopher,
LaVerne, and Julius; and one sister, Rosella Kirschbaum. Funeral services will
be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 19, 2004 at St. John's Catholic Church
in Patch Grove with Father Eric Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in St. John's
Cemetery, Patch Grove Township. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November
18, 2004 from 4:00 7:00 p.m. at the Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington,
and at the funeral home Friday morning one hour prior to the service.
MABLE DALY
Mable M. Daly, 96, of Prairie du Chien died Mon., Nov. 15, 2004, at the Prairie
Health Care Center. She was born May 27, 1908, in Mattoon, to Fred and Lena
Woodard. School days were spent in Mattoon and Antigo. She graduated from Nurse
Training at Wausau Memorial Hospital in 1928, as a registered nurse. She married
John Daly of Wisconsin Rapids at Mattoon, on Apr. 28, 1934. John and she ran the
Fort Crawford Hotel in Prairie du Chien for over 20 years. Later she worked as
an R.N. at the General Hospital and the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital until
she retired in 1974. Her husband preceded her in death in 1989 after 55 years of
marriage. She is survived by her brother Lyle's two daughters, Mrs. Joy Smith of
Rhinelander, and Mrs. Pat Weeks of Sun City, Ariz. She is also survived by many
great friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, at 10 a.m. at St.
Gabriel's Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien, with burial in the Calvary
Cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids. The Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien
assisted the family.
DONALD SHEA
Donald J. Shea, 72, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Chicago, Ill., died
unexpectedly Sun., Nov. 14, 2004, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He
was born Sept. 5, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., son of Daniel and Eileen (McMahon)
Shea. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married JoAnn
Obler on Nov. 9, 1968, in Chicago. He worked as a mortgage loan officer in
Chicago for over 20 years. He was an active member of St. John's church in
Prairie du Chien and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a member of the
Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife JoAnn of Prairie du Chien, four
sons, Steve (Sarah), James (Jenice) and Kevin (Sharon) all of Memphis, Tenn.,
Daniel (Adrienne) of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter Donna (Kevin) Baker of Olive
Branch, Miss.; a brother James (Mary Ann) of Downers Grove, Ill., two sisters,
Nancy O'Neill of Dayton, Ohio and Norine (Larry) Slajchert of Caldwell, N.J.; a
brother-in-law Ted Obler and sister-in-law Carol Ricordati both of Madison; nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at St.
John's Catholic Church, in Prairie du Chien, Rev. John Wambach S.J. officiating.
Military Rites will be accorded following the mass by the Prairie du Chien Honor
Guard. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Casimir Mausoleum in Chicago,
Ill. Friends may call on Thursday, after 4:30 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home
in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6 p.m.

JEAN WALTON
Jean M. Walton 74, of Monroe and formerly of Wauzeka, died Sat., Nov. 13, 2004,
at the Pleasantview Nursing Home in Monroe. She was born Dec. 31, 1929, in Oak
Park, Ill., daughter of Thomas (T.J.) and Loretta (Doll) Hanley. She attended
Platteville Teachers College and taught in a one room schoolhouse on Wauzeka
Ridge. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Platteville where
she lived for many years. She was on the parish council of St. Mary's church in
Platteville and while living in Monroe she enjoyed helping at school and church
fund raisers for St. Victor's Parish. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and
special friend to many who knew her. She was preceded in death by a daughter
Theresa Speth, and her parents. She is survived by her son Tom (Mimi) Walton of
Whitefish Bay, her daughter Mary Jean (Ken) Johnson of Dodgeville, son-in-law
Leonard Speth of Monroe, seven grandchildren, Rob and Jack Walton, Christopher,
Corey (Angela), Alissa, Heather, and Tamara Speth, a step-granddaughter Angela
Avellino of North Carolina, three step-great-grandchildren, a great-grandchild
Alexis Speth; a brother J. Thomas (Madeline) Hanley of Dallas, Texas along with

Michael S. Hayes, 44, of Tomah and formerly of Boscobel, passed away peacefully
at the Veteran's Hospital in Tomah from Huntington's Chorea disease. He was born
on October 27 1960, in Boscobel. The son of Michael and Mary Lou (Richardson)
Hayes. He was a veteran of the United States Marines. He is survived by a
brother, Marc Hayes of Viola; a Sister Michelle (Doug) Whiteaker of Muscoda.

Baxter of Avoca. He was preceded in death by his parents along with a sister

Marie D. Leamy, 90, of Bloomington, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004 at Orchard Manor
Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. She was born April 20, 1914, in Bloomington,
daughter of Edward J. and Magdalene "Lena'' (Maiers) Hermsen. On Jan. 4, 1936,
she married Eugene D. Leamy at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington.
Together they farmed on the Leamy family farm in Bloomington Township until
their retirement in 1967, when they moved to Bloomington. Marie was a devoted
lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington and a member of the
Catholic Daughters and the CCW. Surviving are four children, Mary Jeanne Kusick,
McGregor, Minn., James (Virginia) Leamy, Bloomington, David (Shirley) Leamy,
Bloomington, and Janet Leamy, Madison; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Lucille Hermsen and Charlotte (James, Sr.) Kluesner, both of
Bloomington; one brother, Roy (Mary Jane) Hermsen, Bloomington; and many nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene on May 7, 1989;
one sister, Delores Willoughby; two brothers, Edward Hermsen, Jr. and Alfred
Hermsen; her son-in-law, Richard Kusick; and her great-granddaughter, Trista
Mumm. Services will be Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington,
Father Eric Nielsen officiating with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington.
Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Martin Page
Funeral Home in Bloomington, where a 4 p.m. parish rosary will be held. In lieu

MAUDE KARTMAN
Maude I. Kartman, 94, of Cassville, died Sunday, Nov. 14 at Orchard Manor
Nursing Home in Lancaster. She was born July 26, 1910 in Waterloo Township the
daughter of Jeremiah and Eva (Pierce) Wamsley. In 1929, she married Doran
Kartman Sr. and they farmed for many years in Waterloo Township. He preceded her
in death on Oct. 7, 1977. Maude was a loving mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother. She enjoyed baking, shopping, reading, and watching the Green
Bay Packers. She loved spending time with her family and her life in the
country. Surviving are two daughters-in-law, Barbara Kartman, Cassville, and
Roxanne Boyes, Dubuque, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Rebecca (Robert) Bloyer,
Lancaster, Jeff (Jodi) Kartman, Dubuque, Iowa, Jackie (Keith) Lehmann,
Lancaster, Jeremy Kartman, Cassville, Tammy (Dave) Huff, Cottage Grove, Lori
Kartman, Stitzer, Jason Kartman, Viroqua and Jessica (Todd) DeRuyter, Dubuque,
Iowa; 12 great-grandchildren, one sister Dorothy Chapman, Lancaster and several
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death in addition to her parents and

ARNOLD WHITE
Arnold E. White, 87, of Prairie du Chien, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at the
Prairie Health Care Center in Prairie du Chien. He was born March 15, 1917, in
Eastman, son of Leo and Emma (Becwar) White. He served in the U.S. Army during
WW II. He married Vivian Bedward on Sept. 9, 1936, at St. John's Church in
Prairie du Chien. She preceded him in death on Apr. 10, 1990. He worked for the
229th Army National Guard in Prairie du Chien as a cook for over 30 years and
maintenance at Campion Jesuit High School, and the Commerce Court Mall in
Prairie du Chien. He is survived by a son Ed (Meg) White of McGregor, Iowa, a
brother Leonard White of Milwaukee, a sister Emma Bouzek of Prairie du Chien,
two grandchildren, Klarista and Evan White at home. He was preceded in death by
his parents, his wife, four brothers, Hank, Leo, Frank and John White along with
a sister Sr. Mary Bouzek. A Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, Nov. 9, at
11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both
in Prairie du Chien. Military Rites will be accorded graveside by the Prairie du

LAURA GILLITZER
Laura L. Gillitzer, 45, of Cashton, and formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away
Sat. Nov. 6, 2004, at Bethany St. Joseph's Care Center in LaCrosse, after an
extended illness. She was born Dec. 30, 1958, in Prairie du Chien, daughter of
Eldon and Eldora (Rau) Bunders. She married Clement Gillitzer on July 29, 1978.
Her greatest joy was being the mother of her three children, Kristin Gillitzer
of LaCrosse, and Daniel and Sarah Gillitzer both at home in Westby, with their
father Clem Gillitzer. Also surviving are 3 brothers, Ron (Darlene) and Steve
(Jill) Bunders both of Prairie du Chien and Roger (Patty) Bunders of Madison.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Janis Bunders. A Memorial
Service will be Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home
Chapel, with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.

GLENN GORDON
Glen R. "Bud" Gordon, 67, of McQueeney, Texas, formerly of Marquette, died
Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse,
following a short illness. Glen Richard was born Nov. 11, 1936 at Marquette, to
Glen and Josephine (Loetz) Gordon. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School. He
served in the Army for six years. He worked as an operating engineer for Local
077 in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC area for 40 years. Surviving
are his wife, Katherine of McQueeney, Texas; four step-children; 10 step
grandchildren; three brothers, Fred (Kathy) Gordon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joe
(Shirley) Gordon of McQueeney, Texas, Don (Lee) Gordon of Marquette; nephew,
Dale Wheeler of Severn, Maryland and other nephews and nieces. A Celebration of
Life Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at St. Mary's Church with
burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor. Friends may call at the
church beginning at 10 a.m. Monday. The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home assisted

KENNETH DEMUTH
Kenneth J. DeMuth, died peacefully on November 3, 2004 at the age of 83 and was
reunited with his loving wife of 50 years, Eldora (nee DuCharme). He was
preceded in death by his parents Martha and Ray DeMuth and his brothers Paul and
Max (Raymond) DeMuth. He was a caring and loving father of Kenneth R.
(Christine) DeMuth, Jeanne (Dr. William) Machata, Trudy (Brien) O'Hara, and
Caryl (Steve) Kloppenburg. Very proud grandfather of Monica (Paul Thielke) and
Michelle DeMuth; Noelle, Julie and Justin (Danielle) Machata; Gen, Emily and
Marta Huth; Brooks, Drew and Sam Kloppenburg. Also survived by brothers Bob
(Doris), Larry (Mary), Mike (Pat) DeMuth and sister in law, Ila Mae Cherrier.
Best friend of Joe McMurtagh, Dr. Charles Nader, and the late Emil Jankovich,
also his many friends at Brookfield Highlands where Ken was a longtime, charter
resident. Ken proudly served the country he loved in the Signal Corps during WW
II. Ken was a long time employee of Medico Mart in Milwaukee, retiring in 1987.

VIVIAN LEE
Vivian Lee, 103, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Thursday at Maple Heights Nursing Home
in Mapleton. Vivian was born May 2, 1901 at North McGregor, Clayton County,
daughter of Charles and Graycee (Dickens) Scrogum. After graduating from high
school she worked at the Post Office until she married Robert Bruise Lee on
Thanksgiving Day in 1921. The couple lived in Hartley for about a year when
Robert was offered a Superintendent of School job in Rawlins, Wyo. which became
their residence for 32 years. During this time, Vivian was introduced to the
sport of golf by some friends who offered to teach her to play. Her husband
bought her a set of clubs for her birthday and later a set for himself. From her
first trip to the links in the early 1930's, Vivian went on to win the Wyoming
Ladies State Golf Championship in 1938. She and Bob became accomplished golfers,
a pastime they could enjoy together and both held the title of Rawlins City
Champions. The couple retired to Oceanside, Calif. and in 1966, moved to
Mapleton where Vivian was also the City Champion. Robert died Dec. 7, 1987.
Vivian remained in her home until Oct. of 1999, when she moved into the nursing
home. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton.
Vivian and Bob devoted much of their time to charitable causes through the
Shriners and the Daughters of the Nile, of which she was a Charter Member. Her
hobbies included reading, current events, bridge, socializing and sewing for the
children in the hospitals. Surviving are nieces and nephews and their families.
Along with her husband, Vivian was preceded in death by an infant daughter,
Grace Ann and five nieces and nephews. Services were Monday, Oct. 25 at the
United Methodist Church in Mapleton with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery at
Mapleton. The Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton assisted the family.
BERNARD LECHNIR
Bernard J. Lechnir 80, of Eastman, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the Prairie
du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born the second of four children, son of
Joseph and Rose (Kavon) Lechnir on March 23, 1924, in Prairie du Chien. He
attended Elementary School at Irish Ridge and St. John's in Prairie du Chien. He
attended Prairie du Chien High School and later graduated from Pioneer State
College in Platteville, where he received his bachelor of science degree. He
entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in Texas and the Pacific. He saw combat
on three islands of the Philippines and was awarded the Bronze Star for action
on Luzon. He also served in the army of occupation in Korea after the war. He
worked for the Wisconsin Job Service for over 30 years in Racine, Lancaster, and
as a training coordinator in the State Administrative office in Madison. Bernard
belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the VFW, and was a 19
year member of the Wisconsin National Guard. He married Darlene Byrnes in 1950.
He later married Dorene (Kirschbaum) McPhail in May of 1969. She preceded him in
death in 1997. He is survived by three daughters, Deanna Ruetten of Sugar Grove,
Ill., Linda Brandemuehl of Custer, and Jo Ellen (Jerome) Gobel of Belleville; a
sister Mary (Alfred) Mergen of Bloomington, a step son Steve (Cathy) McPhail of
Lancaster; five grandchildren; Corey (Angela) Ruetten, Andrea Ruetten, Kimberly,
Kyle and Keith Gobel; two step grandsons, Rob and Jason McPhail and a special
friend Dorothea Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers,
Joseph and John. A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church in Eastman, Msgr. John McCarthy officiating, with burial in the
St. Clement's Cemetery in Lancaster. Military Rites were accorded graveside. The

Harold J. Ohmer 86, of McGregor, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at the Great
River Care Center in McGregor following a short illness.
DOLORES INDERMUEHLE
Dolores Edna Indermuehle joined her heavenly Father on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004,
at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center following a hard, three year
battle with ovarian cancer. Dolores was born on April 5, 1928, to Helmuth and
Edna (nee Bussian) Fritz in Milwaukee. She moved with her family to Columbus in
1944. She graduated from Columbus High School, where she met and married her
high school sweetheart, Roland Indermuehle, on June 12, 1948. They moved to
Burnett, Wis. in 1980 until she became sick, at which time moved back to
Columbus. She was a Christian and a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Burnett. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially all of her
grandchildren, reading, bird watching and quilting with the ladies from Zion
Evangelical Lutheran Church. Dolores is survived by her 100 year old mother,
Edna Fritz; her husband of 56 years; their five children, Diane (George) Foreyt
of Bloomington, Dale (friend, Linda Acker) of Middleton, Donna (Bill) Knickmeyer
of Prairie du Sac, Dawn (Ed) Sadowske of Beaver Dam, and Darlene (Mark) Schaefer
of Hudson; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by
her brother, Kenneth (Loretta) Fritz; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis
(Donald) Weiner; brother-in-law, Kenneth (Jeanne) Dahlby; five nieces; seven
nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Dolores was preceded in death
by her father, Helmuth Fritz; her sister, Marilyn Dahlby; her niece, Kim Dahlby;
and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Felix and Marie Indermuehle. Services
were at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Burnett, on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004,
with Pastor Steven Thomas officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus.

KATHARINE DUNNE
Katharine Pinkerton Dunne, 94, passed away Friday, October 29, 2004, at Hebron
Oaks, Oakwood Village West. She was born June 15, 1910, in Richland County, the
daughter of Archibald Clary Pinkerton and Edna Price Pinkerton. Katharine spent
her young years in Avoca, and the family moved to Prairie du Chien in 1922. She
was a graduate of the Prairie du Chien Sanitarium Nursing School and was a
registered nurse. On April 22, 1938, she was married to Patrick John Dunne, who
preceded her in death in 1956. Katharine is survived by two daughters, Eileen
Dunne and Elizabeth ŒBetsy' Dunne, a sister-in-law, Mrs. M.P. Pinkerton, eight
nieces and nephews and several cousins. A memorial service was held on Monday,
November 1, at Bethany United Methodist Church, Madison. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be made to the Oakwood Foundation, 6201 Mineral Point Rd.,

Sabina C. Strnad 91, of Prairie du Chien died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the
Prairie Health Care Center. She was born in Grant County, on Dec. 3, 1912,
daughter of Albert and Kathryn (Vogt) Richter. She married Lawrence Strnad on
May 14, 1938, in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1985. She
was an active member of St. John's Church in Prairie du Chien and worked for the
school lunch program for many years. She is survived by two sons, Gerald (Judy)
and Michael (Sharon) both of Prairie du Chien; two sisters, Mary Berger of
Prairie du Chien and Alberta Bradley of Glen Haven. She was preceded in death by
her parents, her husband, a brother Celestine Richter, four sisters; Ann Waller,
Florence Hill, Nellie and Dorothy Richter. A Mass of Christian Burial was
Monday, Nov. 1, 2004 at St. John's Catholic Church, Rev. Hubert Boschert SJ
officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. The

Marvin Joseph Muehlbauer, 72, passed away October 19, 2004 at his residence in
Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Marvin was born Sept. 28, 1932 in Milwaukee. Marvin
moved to Lake Havasu City, Ariz. three years ago from Prairie du Chien. He was
the owner, manager for Carquest Auto Parts in Prairie du Chien for 45 years. He
was a member of the Knights of Columbus, London Bridge Lions and Our Lady of the
Lake Roman Catholic Church. Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Marie of
Lake Havasu City; sons, Joseph Muehlbauer and wife Sallee of McGregor, Iowa,
James Muehlbauer and wife Barbara of Woodbury, Minn., daughters, Judith Molumby
and husband Richard of Savage, Minn., Carole Muehlbauer of Lake Havasu City,
Ariz.; brothers, Norman Muehlbauer and wife Bertha of Merrill, Wis.; Milton
Muehlbauer and wife Betty of Duvall, Wash.; sister, Mildred Johnson and husband
LeRoy of Willowbrook, Ill.; Grandchildren, Rebecca Molumby, Kelsy, Nicholas and
Colin Muehlbauer. He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar C. Muehlbauer,
March, 1976, mother, Helen A. (Esser) Muehlbauer, March 1976 and sister Marion
Zimmerman, December, 2003. A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of the Lake Roman

MARSHA GROCHOLSKI
Marsha Marie Grocholski, 53, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Elkader, Iowa,
died Monday, October 18, 2004, at the Prairie Health Care Center, Prairie du
Chien, following a long illness and a courageous battle with MS. She was born
December 31, 1950 in McGregor, to Allan and Betty (Livingston) Engelhardt. She
was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. She
graduated from Elkader High School and then obtained her C.N.A. certificate.
Marsha worked at the Elkader Care Center for seven years. She enjoyed spending
time with family and friends. She loved animals of all kinds. Surviving is her
mother, Betty Engelhardt, Elkader, two children, Christine (Mark) Berns,
Farmersburg, James Grocholski, Volga; one grandson and one sister, Joyce
Engelhardt, Elkader. Marsha was preceded in death by her father on August 31,
2002, and one brother, Mark Allan Engelhardt in 1954. Casket Bearers were David

Rose Kossman 82, of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at the
Prairie Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Staten Island, N.Y.,
daughter of William and Lillian (Cozine) Beahm. She married Richard Kossman on
Oct. 14, 1939, in upstate Maryland. She is survived by her husband Dick Kossman
of Prairie du Chien; two daughters, Judy (Jim) Bailey of Savanna, Ill. and Joyce
(Jim) Kozelka of Prairie du Chien; twin sons, Rick Kossman of Sycamore, Ill. and
Roy (Kathy) Kossman of Prairie du Chien; 14 grandchildren and 22 great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and
three sisters. Funeral services were Sunday, at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel,
Rev. Doug Mathison officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in
Prairie du Chien.
VIOLA POLODNA
Viola M. Polodna 97, of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2004,
at the Prairie Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 8, 1906, in Prairie du
Chien daughter of William and Stasia (Toubl) Muller. She attended Ms.
Quilligan's School, St. John's and La Crosse State Teachers College, majoring in
physical education. Her career included teaching at the Sparta Orphanage, St.
Mary's Springs Academy at Fond du Lac, St. Mary's Academy in Prairie du Chien
and two years at Prairie du Chien High School. She married Vincent Polodna on
Aug. 24, 1931. He preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 1989. They owned and
operated the Elm Grove Cabins in Prairie du Chien where McDonald's Restaurant
now stands. They also owned the land where the Memorial Hospital is now located
in Prairie du Chien. She was an active member of St. John's Church and enjoyed
volunteering work for Cub Scouts, Brownies and the Prairie Health Care Center.
She is survived by four children, Joan Balk of Dodgeville, Paul (Barbara)
Polodna of Fairfield Bay, Ar., Karen (Ron) White of Prairie du Chien and Peter
Polodna of Madison; 22 grandchildren, 42 great- grandchildren and two great-
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a
daughter Ann Hexom, a granddaughter Patricia Meyer, a brother Arnold Muller, a
half brother Clem Zach and a half sister Carolyn Faubacher. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Rev. James
Warosh SJ officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du
Chien. Friends may call on Tuesday, at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du
Chien, from 9 a.m. until the time of departure for the church. In lieu of
flowers memorials are preferred to the Prairie Catholic Schools or the Prairie
du Chien Rescue Squad.
SANDRA LESSARD
Sandra K. Lessard, 41, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sat., Oct. 16, 2004
at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, following a courageous battle
with cancer. She was born April 5, 1963 in Prairie du Chien, daughter of Roger
and Norma (Mansfield) Thiede. She married Steven Lessard on Nov. 27, 1996, in
Las Vegas, Nev. She enjoyed gardening and her family was the joy of her life.
She is survived by her husband Steve of Prairie du Chien;, her three children,
Steven, Nicole and Jeremy all at home; her parents Roger and Norma Thiede of
Prairie du Chien; two brothers, Eric Thiede of Prairie du Chien and Eugene
Thiede of Black River Falls; three sisters, JoEllen (Art) Michaud of Florida,
Mona Parisi and Sharon Thiede both of Prairie du Chien. She was preceded in
death by a brother Lance Thiede. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday,
Oct. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Rev. John Wambach S.J.
officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
Friends may call on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral
Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a wake scripture at 8:00 PM. In

RICHARD HAMPTON
Richard J. Hampton, 70, of Bloomington, died Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at
Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster after a difficult and courageous
battle against cancer. He was born January 13, 1934, in Madison, the son of
Harold and Celestine "Peg" (Blackbourn) Hampton. Richard was united in marriage
to JoAnn A. Steele on June 16, 1956, at the Bloomington United Methodist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. Richard was employed by John Deere
Tractor Works in Dubuque, Iowa for 31 years, and after his retirement worked as
a bus driver for the River Ridge Schools. He enjoyed riding and repairing
motorcycles. Richard was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Prairie du
Chien. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Hampton, Bloomington; three sons, Todd
(Catherine) Hampton, Oconomowoc, Kurt (Sheila) Hampton, Bloomington, and Brad
(Catherine R.) Hampton, Prairie du Chien; six grandchildren, and one brother,
Glenn Hampton, Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his mother and father,
and two brothers, Gene and Paul Hampton. Funeral services were Saturday, at the
Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington with Pastor Howard Mace and Pastor Andy
Doll officiating. Burial was in Charlotte Cemetery, Glen Haven Township.
IRENE MIDTLIEN
Irene Nina Midtlien, 78 of McGregor, Iowa and formerly of Westby, passed
away on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor,
Iowa. She was born on July 8, 1926, to Ingman and Nina (Ottum) Bakkestuen. She
was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Westby. Irene married
Leonard Midtlien on April 27, 1946, and they started married life in Stoddard.
Len accepted a position in Milwaukee where they lived until 1954, when they
moved to LaCrosse and together started a 30 year career in small business. They
owned and operated a root beer stand near Galesville, and following retirement,
Len and Irene moved to rural Westby. She was a 45 year member of the Westby
American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of Vang Lutheran Church. Len and
Irene had three daughters: Loretta (Lorie) Betz, a student at Wartburg
Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, Luanne (Michael) Atkins, a middle school
language arts teacher at Prairie Catholic Schools in Prairie du Chien, and Lisa
Jean. Irene was preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory Leonard on April 1,
1954; her father, Ingman on July 20, 1973; a brother, Cyrus on May 3, 1991;
daughter, Lisa on October 2, 1992; husband, Len on December 17, 1994 and her
mother, Nina on October 28, 1997. In addition to her daughters, Lorie and
Luanne, Irene is survived by a brother, Jerome "Bud" (Audrey) Bakkestuen of
Viroqua; sister-in-law, Lorraine Bakkes-tuen of Westby; three grandchildren:
Cory Betz of Fitchburg, Sara Atkins of Winona, Minn., and Nina Atkins of Prairie
du Chien. Funeral services were held on Friday, at Vang Lutheran Church, rural
Westby. Pastor Steven Meyer officiated with burial in the church cemetery. The
Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby assisted the family.
RONALD SHANAFELT
Ronald K. Shanafelt 60, of Prairie du Chien died Sat., Oct. 9, 2004, at the
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 14, 1944, in Clinton, Iowa
son of Darlene and Louis Borgman. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam
War. He worked as a welder and painter. He was a member of the VFW and the
Eagles Club in Prairie du Chien. He loved hunting and fishing. He is survived by
his mother Darlene Borgman of Fulton, Ill.; a brother Terry (Geri) Shanafelt of
Thomson, Ill., a sister Bonnie (James) Guilliams of Fulton, Ill., along with
numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Louis
Borgman. A Memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date. The
Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.
CHARLES BERGER
Charles O. Berger 86, of Prairie du Chien, died Sun. Oct. 10, 2004, at the
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Punkin, Nebr.,
son of Fred and Viola (Gremore) Berger. He married Mary Richter on March 30,
1940, in Prairie du Chien. He worked for the C.C.C. Camps and later became an
engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad where he worked for 38 years until
his retirement. He was a member of the Auroraland Archery Club and was an avid
hunter. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary Berger of Prairie du Chien;
three daughters, Dianna (Wayne) Olson of Hinckley, Ill., Darlene Fischer of
Phoenix, Ariz., and Debra Berger of Aurora, Ill.; five sons, Ronald Picco of
Santa Fe, N.M., William (Margaret) Berger of Aurora, Ill., James Berger of
Pompano Beach, Fla., Garry Berger of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Timothy Berger
of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister Viola Atkins of Prairie du Chien, a brother
William Berger of West Salem; 19 grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, with
burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on

BESS MALVEN
Bess Malven, 98, passed away November 14, 2004, at the Prairie Health Care
Center in Prairie du Chien. This facility had provided care and comfort to her
for the last seven years through the last stages of dementia. Bess was born in
Lamont, Iowa to Albert and Alma (Pierce) Allison on March 30, 1906. She
graduated from the Lamont schools and earned a two year teaching degree from
Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught several years at
rural Fayette County schools and third grade at Lamont. She married Don Malven
on June 15, 1929 at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, Iowa. At that time,
married women were not allowed to teach. She spent the next twenty years or so
as a wife, raising a family of four children and was an active member in the
Manchester, Iowa community. She was involved with the Delaware County Historical
Society, Garden Club, Womenıs Club, and Community Theater. She also helped with
the Manchester Centennial Celebration. During the 1950ıs teacher shortage she
returned to teaching while working on a Bachelors Degree through Upper Iowa
University. She taught in several rural Delaware County schools and also in the
district that later became Maquoketa Valley. She earned her degree in Art
Education from UIU in 1962. Bess taught art at Maquoketa Valley until her
retirement in 1971. She moved to Prairie du Chien in 1979 where she became an
active member in the United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association,
AARP, and Community Theater. Bess is survived by two daughters, Lois (Ron)
Schnoebelen of Chicago, Ill. and Mary Don (Gary) Olson of Prairie du Chien; her
brother, Leland (Marie) Allison of Baraboo; her daughter-in-law, Ruth Malven of
Council Bluffs, Iowa; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandsons and one
great-granddaughter. Also surviving is Sally Malven of Madison, the ³Keleny
Kidsıı and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, two sons, James and Craig, and two brothers, Gilbert and Raymond and a
sister Lois, also a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Malven and two grandchildren, Joan
and Jim Malven. Services will be at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church
on Thursday. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at
11 a.m. Committal services will be at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa at 3
p.m. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family.
JUNE STROMQUIST
June Stromquist 80, of Milwaukee, formerly of Prairie du Chien, died Nov. 10,
2004 in Milwaukee. June was born June 17, 1924 in Crawford County to William and
Rosella (Michael) Fisher. Surviving are five children, Barbara Barboff, Donald
Clark, Jack Clark, Rex (Theresa) Clark and Gilbert (Lisa) Salazar; 11
grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ella Benoy and Dorritt
(Buzz) Lessard both of Prairie du Chien, Doris (Ken) Reed in Ohio, Rose (Buzz)
Hirsh and Shirley Issel both in Arizona. Memorial services were held Saturday,
Nov. 13 at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor with burial at a later
date.
DUANE OSWALD Duane "Ozzie" Oswald, 73, Wauzeka, passed away
unexpectedly in his home Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004. He was born March 13, 1931 in
Wauzeka to William and Elizabeth (Dyer) Oswald. He married Maxine Lathrop on
Feb. 1, 1951, his wife of 53 years. He spent many of his years farming and owned
Ozzies bar in Wauzeka. He enjoyed refinishing furniture when he wasnıt up north
fishing and camping. Surviving are his wife, Maxine of Wauzeka; four daughters,
Diane (Larry) Mullikin, Karen (Brian) Dombeck, Debra (Dave) Ward, Cheryl (Dave)
Slaght all of Wauzeka; two sons, Dennis (Page) Oswald of Wauzeka and Dave Oswald
of La Crosse; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger
(Rita) Oswald of Prairie du Chien; Robert (Doris) Oswald of Verona;
sister-in-law, Delores Oswald of Wauzeka. He was preceded in death by his
parents and one brother Oliver. Services were Sunday at Beeman-Patchak Funeral
Home in Boscobel, Pastor Lynn Schreck officiated, burial in the Wauzeka Cemetery
at a later date.
JOHN NEYLAN
John Thomas Neylan passed away after a long illness in Menlo Park, Calif., the
morning of Wednesday, Sept. 29. He was loved and will be missed by his family
and friends. John was 64 years old. He was born in McGregor, in 1939 and spent
most of his young life in Elkader. John and Bonnie moved to San Mateo in 1960.
They lived in Menlo Park for the past 35+ years. He retired after working 30
years for United Airlines in San Francisco. He was the founder of Sweet Amy's
Coffee and Ice Cream Shop on Willow Road, which he owned for about 13 years
before selling the business. John believed in his commitment to his community.
He enjoyed many wonderful friendships during his life in his special places of
Pacific Grove and Hawaii. Surviving are his loving wife of 44 years, Bonnie and
five children: Tom and Cindy Neylan of Menlo Park, Cathi Mosbarger of
Sacramento, Christine and Marc Hickey of Longmont, Colo., Susie and Brad Foster
of Menlo Park and Amy and Richard Nieva of Menlo Park. Fourteen grandchildren,
Brett, James, and Alex Neylan; Pamela and Rebecca Mosbarger; John, Christopher,
Michelle, Melissa and Laura Hickey; Steven, David and Bonnie Foster; and Emily
Nieva. He is also survived by his sister Jane and Bob Dennler of Elkader, and a
half-sister Patty and David Murray of Sun Prairie. He was preceded in death by
his parents John and Grace Neylan of Elkader. Services were held at Nativity
Church, Menlo Park. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made

Park, Calif. 94025. ESTHER HENKES Esther G. Henkes, 92, of Prairie du Chien
passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Prairie Health Care Center. She was
born and raised near Gunder, Iowa, by her parents, Gilbert and Christina (Roraas)
Halverson. She attended school and church and lived most of her life in Clayton
County, Iowa. She and her husband Everette Henkes were married in their later
years in Prairie du Chien. She is survived by a daughter Gerry (Hank) Nelsen of
Prairie du Chien; two granddaughters, Christi (Craig) Trebes of Crystal Lake,
Ill. and Chari (Scott) Nelson of Hudson; nine great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hiram (Irene) Halverson of Prairie du
Chien and Palmer (Darlene) Halverson of Monona, Iowa; a sister Thelma Ferguson
of McGregor, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Irene Kuthe of Postville, Iowa and Eunice
Halverson of Clermont, Iowa; a brother-in-law Herb Kronberg of Hoffman Estates,
Ill; along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Monday, at St.
Peter Lutheran Church, Prairie du Chien, Rev. Paul Graham officiating, with
burial in the Monona City Cemetery in Monona, Iowa. The Garrity Funeral Home in

David W. Miller, 74, of Evergreen Estates in Cedar Rapids, formerly of Prairie
du Chien, died Sat. Oct 2, 2004, at St. Lukes Hospital after a brief illness.
Survivors include a stepson, Steven (Sherry) Slife of Marquette, a step
grandson, Jeffrey (Deborah) Slife of Cedar Rapids, a step-granddaughter,
Jennifer (Keith) Coleman of Prairie du Chien, three step great-grandchildren,
Miranda Slife of Cedar Rapids, and Drake and Dylan Coleman of Prairie du Chien,
a sister, Rose (Chuck) Everts, a brother, Kenneth Miller and a half brother,
James Falt and eight nieces and nephews to include Kenneth "Rocky"
Miller and his wife, Jody of Toledo. He was preceded in death by his father in
1937, his mother in 1992 and a step great-grandson, Kenneth Douglas Slife in
2001 Dave was born on June 14, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, the son of William and
Josephine Dostal Miller. He married Joan Slife on Aug. 17, 1974, in Prairie du
Chien. She died in 2003. Dave worked in maintenance at Rockwell-Collins for 28
years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of VFW Post No. 788 and proudly served
in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. Dave was a kind and gentle man who loved
to hunt, fish and enjoyed playing cards. A memorial fund has been established.
Military Rites by VFW Post No. 788. Services at 9 a.m. on Wed. at the Cedar
Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery where there
will also be military rites. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home

JUSTIN WESTBROOK
Justin Ross Westbrook, 20, of Prairie du Chien passed away Oct. 3 at
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Justin was born in Casper,
Wyoming on November 25, 1983, son of Norman Westbrook and Lois (Westbrook)
Fernette. He graduated in 2002 from Prairie High School, Prairie du Chien. At
the time of his death he was working for Cleary Building Corp. in Prairie du
Chien. He enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking, music, motorcycles and spending
time with friends. Justin is survived by his mother Lois (Eric) Fernette of
Prairie du Chien; father, Norman Westbrook of Casper, Wyo.; brother Nathan
(Wendy) Westbrook of Charlotte, N.C.; sister Andrea Westbrook of Prairie du
Chien; half-brother Brendon Westbrook of Casper, Wyo.; step sister Alexandrea
Bomkamp of Platteville; two grandmothers Beverly Capshaw and Dora Jean Westbrook
both of Casper, Wyo.; step-grandparents Rosemary Fernette and Ken (Jane Ambrose)

MARION GARRITY
Marion Francis Garrity, 82, of Prairie du Chien, passed away unexpectedly,
Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at her home. She was born June 11, 1922, in Minneapolis,
Minn., daughter of Benoit and Frances (Mulrean) Fournier. She attended South
High School in Minneapolis and later graduated from the University of Minnesota
in Dental Hygiene. She married Robert Garrity on Aug. 24, 1942. Her beloved
husband of 55 years preceded her in death on March 28, 1997. Together she and
her husband owned and operated the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien for
over 50 years. She was a longtime member of the Third Order Carmelites and a
devout member of St. John's Catholic Church. Marion was an avid bridge player
and adored her children and grandchildren. She is survived by five sons, Timothy
of Waukesha, Daniel (Karen) of Bloomington, Minn., Kevin (Judy) of Logan Utah,
Michael (Wendy) of Prairie du Chien, Maj. Brendan (Lisa) of Vacaville, Calif.;
five daughters Margaret Garrity of Malibu, Calif., Bridget (Lee) Hettinger of
Arlington Heights, Ill., Sheila Garrity of LaCrescent, Minn., Maura (John)
Wehrenberg and Kathleen Garrity both of Prairie du Chien; 32 grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters,
Jeanne Neill and twin sister Lois Hartin, along with a brother William Fournier.

DOROTHY McCULLICK
Dorothy A. McCullick, 79, of Wauzeka died Tues., Oct. 5, 2004, at the Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born September 21, 1925, in
Milwaukee. She married Fay McCullick on June 20, 1945, in Prairie du Chien. She
worked as a secretary for Becker and Tuckwood Construction and later for LCC
Loudspeaker in Lancaster. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of
Wauzeka and enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband. She is survived by her
husband Fay of Wauzeka; a son Tom (Sandy) McCullick of Wauzeka; two
granddaughters, Lacy McCarthy and Mara McCullick. She was preceded in death by
her mother Opal Eckleberry. Funeral services will be held graveside on Friday,
at 1 p.m. at the Wauzeka Cemetery in Wauzeka, with Rev. Lynn Schreck
officiating. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the

LILLIAN BOLDT
Lillian Wold Anderson Boldt, 93, Prairie du Chien, formerly of Gunder, died
Saturday, September 25, 2004, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie
du Chien, following a long illness. She was born in Clayton County to John and
Mary (Reierson) Wold on January 6, 1911. She was united in marriage to Mervin
Anderson on July 17, 1929, in Cresco, Iowa. Three children were born to this
union. Mervin died in 1965. She was married to Clifford Boldt on May 25, 1969.
Clifford died in 2002. Lillian was a homemaker who enjoyed embroidering and
being a member of the homemakers club. She was active in her churches over the
years. Survivors include three children, Merlin (Lenora Mae) Anderson, Elkader,
Elaine Hanson, Waterloo, Sandra Weiland, Iowa City; one step-daughter, Donna
Kiefer, Des Moines; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister,
Delores Pine, Marion and one brother, Realto Wold, Edgewood. Lillian was
preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Mervin Anderson and Clifford

Lawrence L. Clark, age 57, of Prairie du Chien, died Sunday, September 26, 2004,
at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born December 3, 1946, in
Estherville, Iowa, the son of Lawrence A. and Mary (Dolan) Clark. On May 26,
1972, he married Gloria J. Ready at Grandview United Methodist Church in
Dubuque, Iowa. He worked for many construction companies. His carpentry talent
was passed on to many people that worked with him. Larry enjoyed fishing. The
love of his life was his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his
former wife, Gloria Clark, Prairie du Chien; two children, Linda Marfilius,
Bagley; and John (Lori) Clark, St. Mary's, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jordan,
Jesse, Whitni, and Hunter; seven brothers and sisters, Tom (Shirley) Dolan, East
Dubuque, Ill., Delores (Pete) Walker, Seminole, Fla., Gloria (Roger) Vanasse,
Largo, Fla., Sandra (Carl Ellington) Hogan, Hampton, Ga.. Linda (Mike) Campbell,
Dubuque, Iowa, Robert (Pamela) Baysinger, Dubuque, Iowa, and John Baysinger,
Senoia, Ga.; his father-in-law, Walter Ready, Bagley; and many nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steven
Baysinger. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 29, at noon at the
Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington with Pastor Mary Ann Floerke
officiating. Burial was in Bagley Cemetery. A Lawrence L. Clark memorial fund
has been established.
FREDERICK ZENZ
Frederick J. Zenz, 88, of Lancaster, formerly of Patch Grove, died Monday,
September 27, 2004, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. He was born
November 23, 1915, in Patch Grove Township, the son of Bernard and Elizabeth (Gassell)
Zenz. He graduated from the farm and industry short course at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in 1934. On January 17, 1939, he married Ruth E. Gates at St.
John's Catholic Church in Patch Grove. She died on July 1, 1958. He later
married Mary C. Patcle on August 20, 1960, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in
Potosi. She preceded him in death on October 22, 2000. Fred farmed in Patch
Grove Township and operated the Zenz family farm until his retirement. He was a
member of St. John's Catholic Church in Patch Grove, and its Holy Name Society.
He was a member of the former Patch Grove school board, a member of the board of
directors of Bloomington Farmer's Mutual Insurance, and a trustee of St. John's Cemetery Association. Surviving are four children, Joseph (Marilyn) Zenz,
Phoenix, Ariz.; Nancy (Jack) Errthum, Manhattan, Ill.; Maryann (Jim) Steiger,
Bagley, and Fred (Dianne) Zenz, Jr., Prairie du Chien; many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Bergner, Overland, Mo.; five
sisters-in-law, Marjorie Zenz, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mabel (Merlin) Brandt, Tennyson;
Emma Hampton, Lancaster; Virginia Gates, Lancaster; and Mary Ettelson, Clovis,
Calif.; and two brothers-in-law, Frank Patcle, Potosi; and James Gates, Madison.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Edward, and brother-in-law, Fran
Bergner. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 30, at St.
John's Catholic Church in Patch Grove with Father Eric Nielsen officiating.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Patch Grove Township. Visitation will be
held from 4 8 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Martin Page Funeral Home in
Bloomington, where a 4 p.m. parish scripture service will be held, and after 10
a.m. at the funeral home Thursday morning. In lieu of plants and flowers, a
Frederick J. Zenz memorial fund has been established.
MILTON READY
Milton Ready of Janesville passed away on September 21, one day following his
81st birthday. Milton was the son of George and Lydia (Granzow) Ready and spent
his young life in Bagley and Bridgeport. Whenever he returned to this area he
would stop to visit his many friends and relatives. When living here Milton
worked for his friend Elmer Sawvell who owned and operated a roller skating
rink. He was a gifted skater and many enjoyed watching him skate. He worked at
General Motors in Janesville for over 30 years. He married Betty Zeruba and they
have two daughters, Roxanne and Sandra. His parents preceded him in death and
also two sisters, Iona Halverson and Viola Jones of Prairie du Chien. Two
sisters remain, Delores Oswald of Wauzeka and Arlene Hubka of Muskego. He leave
his passing nephews and nieces in Prairie du Chien and other special friends,
one being Donald Steiner, also special friend Curtis Forbes of Manawa. Interment
is in Savanna Cemetery in Savanna, Ill.
SUZANNE McGUIRE
Ms. Suzanne McGuire, 49, of Taylorsville, Ga. formerly of McGregor, passed
away early Saturday morning, Sept. 18, 2004 at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga.
Surviving are a son, Alex Pfeiffer of Madison; daughters, Melissa Pfeiffer of
Baraboo, and Vanessa Dawson of Madison; three brothers, Dennis McGuire of
Canton, Ga., Kevin McGuire of Fairmount, Ga. and Peter McGuire of Taylorsville,
Ga.; four sisters, Wendy Leskovac of Acworth, Ga., Mary Jo McGuire of Fairmount,
Ga., Cathie Stoehr of Prairie du Chien and Teresa Hicks of Taylorsville, Ga. She
was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Cecelia McGuire and one sister
Michele McGuire. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 20 at the Chapel of
Cagle Funeral Home in Jasper, Ga. with the Rev. Bob Self officiating. Interment
followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper, Ga.

Robert R. Hamilton, age 47, of Bloomington, died Sunday, September 19, 2004,
at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born May 12, 1957, in Crawford
County, the son of James L. "Jiggs" and Betty (Jeidy) Hamilton. On February 11,
1974, he married Lorna W. Webb in Kahoka, Mo. Bob was a log buyer for Nelson
Hardwood in Prairie du Chien. He was a great handyman to many, helping whenever
he could. He was good at putting a smile on your face, and enjoyed spending time
with his family, especially his grandsons. He is survived by his wife, Lorna
Hamilton, Dubuque, Iowa; two children, Jesse (fiance Nikki Ploessl) Hamilton,
Bloomington; and Nicole Hamilton, Lancaster; three grandsons, Tyson and Tavian
Kelz; and Owen Hamilton; four brothers, Randy (Michelle) Hamilton, Bloomington;
Larry (Suzanne) Hamilton, Blue River; Scott (Donna) Hamilton, Dodgeville; and
Pat (Janita) Hamilton, Patch Grove; his mother, Betty (Duane) Benoy, Patch
Grove; his father-in-law, Hank Webb, Bagley; his brother-in-law, Joe (Bertha)
Webb, Vail, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by
his father, "Jiggs" Hamilton, his mother-in-law, Roberta Webb; his
brother-in-law, Skippy Webb; and his sister-in-law, Cozy Hamilton. Graveside
services and interment will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 10:30

WILLIAM MERCAITIS
William A. Mercaitis Sr. 79, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Rockford, Ill.
died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial
Hospital. He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Rockford, Ill., son of John and Mary (Chepulis)
Mercaitis. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II in the South Pacific
Theatre. He married Cleo Schmidt on Sept. 27, 1947, in Rockford, Ill. He owned
and operated the 7th Street Barber Shop in Rockford, for many years. He was the
past Faithful Navigator of the Bishop Muldoon Assembly 4th degree Knights of
Columbus, in Rockford. He was a member of the Campion Council Knights of
Columbus in Prairie du Chien, the 4th degree Fr. Mazzucelli Assembly and the
Eagles Club Aerie 1502. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, playing bridge and crafts.
Bill was always busy. He is survived by his wife Cleo of Prairie du Chien; two
sons Steve (Pat) of Mt. Hope, and William Jr. (Jane) of Port Aransas, Texas; a
sister Albina Andris of Eddyville, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Darrin
Klapprodt, Darci (Todd) Knapp, Christopher and Kevin Mercaitis, Stephanie (Rick)
Kramel, Chad and Chris Gallagher, along with 10 great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Charles, Joseph and John. A
Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, Rev. James
Warosh S.J. officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du
Chien. Military Rites were accorded graveside by the Prairie du Chien Honor

Nancy L. Krantz, 60, of Bloomington, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, at
her home. She was born June 7, 1944, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Dr.
Howard and Sylvia (Klema) Brooks. In 1962, she married John A. Krantz and
together they had four children. She was a lifelong resident of Bloomington and
enjoyed her work as a caregiver. Nancy enjoyed reading and was very involved in
her family's activities. She is survived by her four children, Kathy Krantz,
McFarland; Rebecca (Rob) Johnstone, Bloomington; Deborah (Bruce) Allen,
Bloomington; and Tom Krantz, Beetown; four grandchildren, Alicia and Kyle
Johnstone; and Zachery and Johanna Allen; and her sister-in-law, Bunny Brooks,
Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, John;

Philomena M. Sprosty, 4, of Steuben passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at the
UW- Hospital in Madison, from injuries sustained in an accident at home. She was
born Sept. 6, 1999, daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Walz) Sprosty. She is
survived by her parents, six brothers, Daniel (Kim) and Tim "Tug"(Shannon)
Sprosty both of Eastman, Craig (Amanda) Allert of Wauzeka, Patrick, Joseph and
Gabriel Sprosty all of Steuben, five sisters, Mary Kay (Chad) Hering of
LaCrescent, Minn., Angela, Bernadette, Stephanie and Margaret Sprosty all of
Steuben; her paternal grandfather Ray Sprosty of Prairie du Chien, maternal
grandparents, Caroline Walz of Eastman, and John Walz of Random Lake; along with
many uncles, aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal
grandmother Evelyn Sprosty. A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, at the
Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Prairie du Chien, the Most Reverend Francis Slupski
officiating, with burial in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Eastman.
BYRDIA HAMPTON
Byrdia M. Hampton, 86, of Horicon, formerly of Patch Grove, died Thursday,
September 2, 2004, at Victorian Villa Elderly Assisted Living in Horicon. She
was born August 11, 1918, in Woodman Township, the daughter of Earl and Eva (Strack)
Rands. On June 10, 1944, she married Roy Hampton at the Lancaster United
Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1986. Byrdia taught school
for many years in Grant County, with the last 20 years in the West Grant School
(presently known as River Ridge). She was a longtime resident of Patch Grove and
member of Patch Grove Methodist Church. Byrdia moved to Victorian Villa in
Horicon in May 2001 to be closer to her son, Russell. She is survived by her
son, Russell (Sheri) Hampton, Horicon; two grandchildren, Craig (Amy) Hampton,
Burnett; and Dawn Hampton, Beaver Dam; one daughter, LaVonne (Victor) Lenth,
Bagley; one sister, Beulah Olmstead, Woodman; 11 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and
friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; four sons, Norbert,
Duane, Donald, and James Hampton; and one brother, Dale Rands. Funeral services
were Tuesday, at the United Methodist Church in Patch Grove with Pastor Mary Ann
Floerke officiating. Burial was in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington
Township. The Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington, assisted the family.
JEAN LECHNIR
Jean B. Lechnir, 87, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Thursday, August
26, 2004, at the Prairie Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. She was born
July 16, 1917, in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Archie and Lillian (Hosp)
Hahn. She married Thomas "Ray" Lechnir on August 8, 1940, at St. John's Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on Sept.
13, 1981. She is survived by a son, Thomas (Nyleen) Lechnir of Fond du Lac; five
daughters, Patricia McGinley of Milwaukee, Nancy Heberlein of Madison, Jane
(Michael) O'Brien of Prairie du Chien, Connie (Herb) Thompson of Cottage Grove,
Janet (Tim) Giese of Prairie du Chien; 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial was held Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in
Prairie du Chien, Father James Warash S.J. officiating, with burial in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the

ELEANOR GLEASON
Eleanor J. Gleason, 87, of Fennimore, passed away Sunday, August 22, 2004 at the
Boscobel Area Health Care in Boscobel. She was born April 24, 1917 in Wingville
Township, Grant County, daughter of Charles and Catherine (O'Flahrity) Wilkins.
She married Ambrose J. Gleason on October 31, 1942 in San Pedro, Calif.
Surviving are six children, Robert (Betty) Gleason of Dodgeville, Tom (Mary)
Gleason of Fennimore, Patricia Prochaska (Chester Barr) of Prairie du Chien,
Kathleen (Curtiss) Freymiller of Fennimore, Rita (Mike) Ferrie of Fennimore and
Mary (Michael) Coudray of Belleville; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren
and a sister, Kathryn Tormey of Verona. She was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, Ambrose on June 1, 1981; brother Edward Wilkins, sister Doris
Wilkins, granddaughter, Jennifer Gleason and infant twin great-granddaughters,
Morgan and Shelby Gleason. Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Fennimore Thursday, August 26, 2004.

Evelyn G. Harris, 87, Prairie du Chien, formerly of Cassville, died
Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born
June 29, 1917 in Wyalusing Township, daughter of Louis and Madeline (Karrmann)
Markley. On Aug. 10, 1935, she married Lee W. Harris in Dubuque, Iowa. He
preceded her in death on July 30, 1994. Evelyn was employed at Rapid Die &
Mold Company in Cassville for over 20 years. She enjoyed traveling and
gardening, especially flowers. She was an excellent cook and baker, able to make
anything taste good. Evelyn dearly loved her family. Surviving are four
children, Ron (Patricia) Harris and Robert (Karen) Harris, both of Prairie du
Chien; Susan (Robert) Johnson, Marshall; and Kathy (Rick) Bausch, Glen Haven; 15
grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
husband Lee, her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Metcalf; her parents,
two sisters, Leona Fisher and Dorothy Knight; and one brother, Louis Markley,
Jr. Services were Wednesday at noon at the Martin Page Funeral Home in
Cassville, Rev. David Leistra officiating with burial in Charlotte Cemetery,
Glen Haven. Visitation was also Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
ROBERT DAGNON
Robert "Bob" W. Dagnon, 83, of rural Ferryville, died Saturday,
Sept. 4, 2004 at his residence. Robert was born in Seneca on December 27, 1920,
son of George and Agitha (Check) Dagnon. At a young age, Bob's family moved to
Elderon, where they farmed. He graduated from Wittenberg High School. He ran the
family dairy farm for many years and also hauled pulp. He enjoyed fishing, going
to auctions and loved the land. Surviving are two nephews, Gerald Bender,
Cudahy, and Dennis (JoAnn) Bender, St. Francis; nieces, other relatives and many
friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Services will be at 12 p.m. Friday at the Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua. The
family will greet relatives and friends on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of
services. Burial will follow at Walnut Mound Cemetery, Retreat.
THOMAS CARROLL
Thomas J. Carroll, 68, of Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at
the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born August 31, 1936
in Boscobel, son of Thomas and Virginia (Bachin) Carroll. Thomas was a resident
of the Northern Center in Chippewa Falls and Lori Knapp Homes in Prairie du
Chien. He enjoyed "going for rides,'' music and the outdoors. He was preceded
in death by his parents, a brother Michael and a sister Patricia. A memorial
service will be held at a later date at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du
Chien.
TODD MCNETT
Todd A. McNett, 43, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Cuba City, died Friday,
Sept. 3, 2004. Todd was born on Dec. 24, 1960 in Cuba City, son of Richard and
Pauline (Luciani) McNett. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1980. Todd
worked at Universal Forest Products in Prairie du Chien for ten years. Todd
loved outdoor activities - camping, fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, and trips
to Cabela's with his boys. He also enjoyed taking his boys camping and fishing,
and watching NASCAR and Packer football games on TV. Todd enjoyed his big boy
toys - his four-wheeler, 68 Firebird convertible and Harley. Of most importance
to Todd was time spent with family and friends. He truly enjoyed people.
Surviving are his longtime companion and fiancee, Rose McDermott, of Prairie du
Chien; a daughter, Cory Brand, of Platteville; two sons, Bradley and Brian at
home; his mother, Pauline McNett of Cuba City; a brother, Rich (Lisa) McNett of
Platteville; five sisters, Lynn (Dennis) Schroeder, of Madison, Karen Corpian,
of The Colony, Texas, Patti (Dale) Dreessens and Jill (Charlie) Cherry, both of
Cuba City and Lisa (fiance, Joe Culbertson) of Dubuque, Iowa and a grandson,
Andrew. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard McNett, and a
brother-in-law, Michael Corpian. Services were Tuesday, at Casey Funeral Home in
Cuba City with burial in Carr Cemetery.
MARCELLINE WALLER
Marcelline E. Waller 96, of Prairie du Chien died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at
the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 23, 1907, in Prairie
du Chien, daughter of Daniel and Grace Cardine. She married Melvin Waller on
Aug. 18, 1926. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1988. She attended St.
Gabriel's elementary school and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School.
Marcelline worked at the Woolen Mill in Prairie du Chien and later for Sears and
Roebuck in Madison, for over 20 years. She is survived by two brothers, Raymond
Cardine of Madison, and Daniel Cardine of Tampa, Fla., and a granddaughter
Frances (Kuldip) Shenker of New Delhi, India. She was preceded in death by her
parents, her husband, a son Roger Waller, a daughter Shirley Savord, a brother
Lawrence Cardine and a sister Marie Schroeder. A Mass of Christian Burial will
be Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at 11a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, with
burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at
the church on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The
Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.

Daniel J. Schneider, 53, of Milwaukee, formerly of Prairie du Chien found peace
Sunday, August 22, 2004, He was born in Prairie du Chien on Feb. 28, 1951 to
Frank and Mary (nee Masteller) Schneider. Surviving are his son Brian; brothers,
James and Robert (Linda); sister, Barbara Williams and other relatives and
friends. Private family services were held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans
Memorial Cemetery.

Robert J. Tesar, 86, of Prairie du Chien died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at his
home. He was born Oct. 16, 1917, in Prairie du Chien, son of John and Laura (LaBonne)
Tesar. He married Evelyn Tuckwood on March 9, 1940. She preceded him in death on
Oct. 25, 1976. He later married Agnes Levenhagen Valley on Nov. 4, 1978. He
worked as a machinist for A.O. Smith in Milwaukee, and was a Supervisor for
National Decorated Metals in Prairie du Chien. He then worked for the Parks and
Recreation Dept. for the City of Prairie du Chien until his retirement. He was a
member of the Eagles Club and the Holy Name Society. He is survived by his wife
Agnes of Prairie du Chien; four daughters Joanne (Edwin) Everson, Doris (Ed)
Fuller, Barb (Rick) Groom and Judy (Phil) Becwar all of Prairie du Chien; two
sons; Dick (Kay) and Mike (Lynn) Tesar both of Prairie du Chien; a sister
Mildred (Bob) Dama of Oconomowoc; a stepson Mike (Lisa) Valley of Prairie du
Chien, a stepdaughter Lori (Dennis) Frisby of Medicine Park, Okla.; a
sister-in-law Vi Tesar of Prairie du Chien, a daughter-in-law Kathy Tesar of
Prairie du Chien, 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, eight
great-great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Roger, two brothers, Jack and

Mark C. Blum, 80, of Glen Haven, died Thursday, August 26, 2004, at the William
S. Middleton Memorial V. A. Hospital in Madison. He was born June 1, 1924, in
rural Glen Haven Township, the son of Louis M. and Frances (Meier) Blum. He
enlisted and served in the U. S. Army from 1941-1945, serving in the Battle of
the Bulge and also in Japan. On February 18, 1950, he married Wilma A. Esser at
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington. Together they farmed on the Blum
family farm. Mark was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed duck hunting, deer
hunting, and fishing. He loved animals, especially dogs, and enjoyed playing
cards, gardening, and doing yard work. He dearly enjoyed his neighborhood. Mark
was a member of the Donaldson Kelly Kirshbaum VFW Post #7080 in Cassville and
the Abraham Hickok American Legion Post #148 in Bloomington. He was a member of
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glen Haven and was a 3rd Degree Knights of
Columbus. Mark took great pride in his grandchildren and dearly enjoyed spending
time with his family. He is survived by his wife Wilma Blum, Glen Haven; five
children, David (Lea) Blum, Cherry Valley, Ill., Randy (Sun) Blum, Honolulu,
Hawaii, Steven Blum, Cassville, Stacey Gunnip, Glen Haven, and Sherry (Larry)
Johll, Glen Haven; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma
Crapp, Lancaster; and one sister-in-law, Dolores Blum, Glen Haven. He was
preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul Blum. Funeral services
were Monday, August 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glen Haven with Father
John Norder officiating. Burial with military honors was accorded at Gockel
Cemetery, Glen Haven Township. The Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington,
assisted the family.
VIRGINIA TOBERMAN
Virginia P. Toberman 83, of Prairie du Chien died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at
the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born June 10, 1921, in Mt. Hope,
daughter of John and Laura (Baker) Cauffman. She married Lloyd Toberman on June
15, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. She worked as a draft board clerk for the Selective
Service in Crawford County, for many years. She was a 4-H Leader and an active
member of the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien. She loved sewing and
spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Lloyd
Toberman of Prairie du Chien; two daughters, Patricia Craig of Saukville, and
Jean (Tom) Welsh of Union Mills, Ind.; two sons, Stan (Barb) and Phil Toberman
both of Prairie du Chien; two sisters, Mabel Fry of Boscobel, and Laura (Ervin)
Walker of Prairie du Chien; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Claudia, her parents, a brother
Lester Cauffman, four sisters; Cora Goodrich, Iva McLean, Hazel Galer and
Marcella Coleman. Funeral Services were Monday at the United Methodist Church,
Rev. Stuart Allen officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in
Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.
MILDRED FORST
Mildred M. Forst age 88 of Prairie du Chien died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at the
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 25, 1915, in Prairie du
Chien, daughter of Charles and Mary (Lechnir) Mara. She married Vencil Forst on
May 26, 1936, at St. Johns Church in Prairie du Chien. Her husband of 68 years
preceded her in death on July 6, 2004. She assisted in the operation of the
family farm, was an excellent cook, and enjoyed gardening. Mildred was a
lifetime member of St. John's Church. She is survived by a son John Forst of
Prairie du Chien, six daughters; Jeanette Nolte of Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Ellen
(Ed) Linder of Prairie du Chien, Theresa Marso of Ocala, Florida, Elizabeth
(Roger) Kuehl of Garnavillo, Iowa, Alma (Henry) Bockenstedt of Edgewood, Iowa
and Carol (Dale) Becwar of Hiawatha, Iowa, 18 grandchildren and 28 great
grandchildren; a sister-in-law Frances Mara of Seattle, Wash. She was preceded
in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Arthur Mara and two sons-in-law:
Harmon Nolte and Dale Marso. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Aug.
18, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary
Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Tuesday, from 4 to 8
p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a
rosary at 4 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.
CARL SEITZ
Carl Michael (Mike) Seitz, 43, of Lynxville, Wisconsin, formerly of Davenport,
Iowa, died Friday, August 6, 2004, in a boating accident in Lynxville. Mr. Seitz
was born September 12, 1960, in Davenport, Iowa to Carl Walter and Donna Jean
(Clough) Seitz. He married Sandra L. Raymie on August 20, 1983, in Donahue,
Iowa. He was a member of Ironworkers Local Union #111, of Rock Island, Illinois
for 17 years. He currently worked for Nelson Hardwoods in Prairie du Chien,
Wisconsin. He enjoyed life, family, friends, fishing, hunting and music. His
pride and joy was his grandson Tyson. He enjoyed anything that would get him
outdoors or that he could build with his hands. Survivors include his wife,
Sandra Seitz, Lynxville; his son and best friend, Michael, Lynxville; his
grandson, Tyson; his daughter-in-law, Amanda J. (Jones) Seitz, Lynxville;
mother, Donna Jean (Clough) Seitz, Davenport, Iowa; and a brother William Seitz,
Grand Mound, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father Carl Walter Seitz and
his grandparents. Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m., Friday, August
13, 2004, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3-8

ROYAL WILLIAMSON
Royal Oscar Williamson, 90, of Prairie du Chien, died Sunday, August 8,
2004, at his home following a long illness. Royal was born Dec. 13, 1913 at
Rockford, Iowa to Thomas and TriPhena (Berk) Williamson. He married Erma Geisler
on Feb. 3, 1951 in Prairie du Chien. He farmed his entire life. In 1951 he moved
from his Iowa homestead to rural Wauzeka. He was one of the first farmers in the
area who used a threshing machine and was also one of the last who used
cornshocks. In September of 1987 Royal and Erma retired and moved to Prairie du
Chien. Royal is survived by his wife, Erma; four daughters, Martha (Ronald)
Whiteside of Clarksville, Iowa, Marilyn (Ronald) Sutton of Eastman, Janet
(Jerry) Ostrander of Prairie du Chien, Betty (Joseph) Valley of Sun Prairie; 15
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents, four brothers, Frank, Edward and Theodore Green-man, Thomas Williamson
and one sister Jenny (Greenman) Lansing. Services are Wednesday at St. Peter
Evangelical Lutheran Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Prairie du Chien.

Joshua T. Kleppe, 17, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, passed
away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa
as the result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
GARY SMRCINA
Gary Peter Smrcina, 47, of Prairie du Chien, went to his heavenly home on Aug.
6, 2004. He had been hospitalized at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La
Crosse. Gary was born June 22, 1957, to John and Rosie (Severson) Smrcina in
Prairie du Chien. He attended Special Education classes in the Prairie du Chien
School District. Gary was a loving, thoughtful and generous individual who
enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Gary taught us to appreciate life and
to simply enjoy all things each day. He had a special love for music and was an
enthusiastic Statler Brothers fan. Surviving are his mother, Rosie; two
brothers, Ron (Linda) Smrcina and Bruce Smrcina; a niece, Angie (Aaron)
Henderson; and a nephew, Troy Smrcina (Amy Stagman); many aunts, uncles, cousins
and a special friend, Debbie Check. He was predeceased by his father, John and
by his grandparents. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor Doug Mathison officiating and burial in the
Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home Monday
from 5-7 p.m. and at the church Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
ROBERT KLEINOW
Robert E. Kleinow, 52, of Marquette, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Meriter
Hospital in Madison, following a long illness. Robert was born August 29, 1951
in McGregor to Earl and Mildred (Leach) Kleinow. He attended Northeast Iowa
Community College at Calmar, Iowa. He worked as a farm laborer and also in
maintenance for the railroad. He married Jane Hiebing on June 4, 1977 in Prairie
du Chien. He had been disabled for the past 20 years but had been working part
time for Homeward Bound in Prairie du Chien. Surviving are his wife, Jane;
trusty dog Reuben; four siblings, William (Sherlyn) Kleinow of Lancaster, Sandra
(Harold) Beck of Elk Port, Iowa, Sharon Kricke of McGregor, Karen (Leonard)
Pillard of Merrillan, Wis.; mother-in-law Anne Hiebing, of Prairie du Chien. He
was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ronald and Larry Kleinow.
Services were Saturday, Aug. 7 at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor with
burial at a later date.

GERALD HOILIEN
Gerald "Jerry" Hoilien, 76, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004
at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. Gerald Ira "Jerry"
Hoilien was born in Boscobel on April 25, 1928, son of Ira and Zetta (Cooley)
Hoilien. He moved with his family to Austin, Minn. where he graduated from high
school in 1946 and Jr. College in 1948. He was a state swimming champion on the
100 yard backstroke in 1946 and later swam for the team at Carlton College in
Northfield, Minn. On Nov. 27, 1949, he married Joyce LaVonne Heimer in Onawa,
Iowa where the family operated Hoilien Hardware for many years. Jerry was very
active in scouting, serving as Cub Master, Scoutmaster and Explorer Advisor.
Jerry's love of the outdoors always dominated his life and in 1960 he took a job
with the State of Iowa as a State Conservation Officer. He served as a Federal
US Deputy Game Warden from 1961 - 1989 and was the Iowa State Regional
Supervisor after 1969 overseeing 27 counties. He was a State Firearms
instructor, State Training officer and taught at the State Police Officers
Academy in Des Moines. During his career, Jerry developed many innovative
techniques in wildlife management, identification and forensics that he compiled
in a work that became known as the "Blue Books,'' which are still in practice
today and used as a training manual in many states as well as internationally.
He served as president of the Iowa Wildlife Officers Association and as chairman
of the Forensic Committee for the Midwest Association, traveling extensively
throughout the Midwest sharing his knowledge at seminars, fairs and sport shows.
He also led a conservation course at Luther College for several years, became an
accomplished taxidermist and was instrumental in re-introducing the wild turkey
to Iowa. In later years he wrote and published "The Warden's Dairy'' and "The
Warden's Cookbook'' as well as numerous articles for the Iowa Conservationist
and the International Game Warden. His achievements were recognized in 1986 when
he received the International Game Warden Award from the Midwest Fish & Game
Law Enforcement Officers Association. Jerry retired to rural Harpers Ferry where
he lived on a former apple orchard and continued to pursue his love of the
outdoors by hunting, fishing and walking the woods and prairies. Surviving are
his four children, Catherine Ann (Larry Friedberg) Hoilien of Denver, Colo.,
Mary Jo (Randy) Henningsen of Marne, Iowa, Julie Ann (Jeff Mason) Hoilien of
Eldorado Spring, Colo., and Jerry Nordell (Jenny) Hoilien of Monona, Iowa; 12
grandchildren, Jeremy, Tyler, Nicholas, Adria, Jacob, Justin, Lauren, Jada,
Josie, Katie, Zetta and Marcella; three great-grandchildren, Kea, Cameron and
Marney; a special friend and former classmate, Rose Eckert of La Crosse; his big
red dog Reggie; and his neighbor and hunting partner, Park Leachman. He was
preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce who died in 1985, and two
brothers, Nordell and Robert. Casketbearers are Jacob, Justin and Lawrence
Friedberg, Randy Henningsen, Jeff Mason, Jeremy, Tyler and Nick Brix, Mark
Jones, Berl Downing, Park Leachman and Daves Oates. Honorary casketbearers are
all the wardens and peach officers Jerry knew. Services were Monday, Aug. 9 at
St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa with burial in the Boscobel Cemetery,
Boscobel, Wis. The Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa assisted the family. A
memorial fund has been established in Jerry's name.
VIRGINIA KELLY
Virginia (Jenny) Kelly, 67, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Tuesday, July 27,
2004, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. She was born
March 9, 1937. Surviving are, Fiance' Jerry Janus; sons, Dan Kelly, Waterville,
Tim Kelly, Waukon, and Mark Kelly, Des Moines; sister, JoAnn Troendle, Cedar
Rapids, Iowa and brother, Howard Duffy, Waukon, Iowa. Services are Friday, July
30, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon, Iowa with burial at
Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Msr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Visitation is

RITA LUSTER
Rita M. Luster, 62, of Hiwatha, Iowa, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, in Mercy
Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Rita was born the
daughter of Donald and Mary Ellen (Craig) McFarland on May 11, 1942 in Gays
Mills, Wisconsin. On May 21, 1966, in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Harpers
Ferry, she was united in marriage to Charles Luster. She was a member of St.
Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles;
sisters, Reggie Johnson, Eileen (Bill) Pickrum and Joyce (John) Luster;
brothers, Bud McFarland, Don McFarland and John (Margaret) McFarland;
sisters-in-law Virginia Luster, Mary (Neil) Kane, Myrtle Spinner, Madonna
(James) Rouiller, Helen Rissman and Charlotte (Glenn) Monroe; and
brothers-in-law, Harland (Connie) Luster, Ernie (Alice) Luster and Clarence
(Kay) Luster. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces
and nephews that she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents,
brothers, Bill and Leo McFarland and brothers-in-law, James Luster, Don Spinner,
Don Rissman and Warren Johnson. Rita was a loving wife and loved her family
dearly. A memorial fund has been established in Rita's memory.
DENNIS BECK
Dennis J. "Denny" Beck, 61, of Onalaska, died at his home on Sunday, August 1,
2004. He was born in Oshkosh, on July 2, 1943, to Joseph and Marge (Miller)
Beck. He married Pamela Scholz on January 2, 1982, in Milwaukee. She preceded
him in death on December 15, 2000. Denny was a 1961 graduate of Madison East
High School. Following his graduation, Denny enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and
served for six years during the Viet Nam War. After being discharged from the
Navy, he worked for IBM for over twenty years. Denny was an avid outdoorsman who
enjoyed boating on the river, hunting, and fishing, and was an avid Green Bay
Packer fan. He also enjoyed tending to his rose garden and family vacations.
Denny was a devoted grandfather and loved to attend his grandchildren's sporting
events. He is survived by his four daughters, Michelle (Dale) Stormoen of
Prairie du Chien, Jamie Beck of Holmen, Rebecca (Craig) Rieber of Holmen, and
Anna (Travis) Becker of Sun Prairie; eight grandchildren, Alex, Cole, Trey,
Samuel, Josey, Jonah, PamElla, and Doris; his parents, Joseph and Marge Beck of
DeForest; and two brothers, Glenn Beck of Madison, and James Beck of Genoa, Ill.
In addition to his wife, Denny was preceded in death by one brother, Steve, on
December 11, 2000. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 4th, at
1:30 p.m., at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska. Rev. Donald Iliff
will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will take place in the Onalaska
City Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until
the time of service.
ARMELLA ACKER
Armella Anna Acker, 94, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Nazareth House in Stoughton.
Armella was born on July 31, 1909 in Middleton, daughter of William and Gertrude (Breunig) Statz. Armella married George H. Acker on January 11, 1938 in Martinsville. She was a charter member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Madison. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her four children, Theresa of Wauzeka, Mary, William (Victoria) and Simon, all of Madison; three grandchildren, William, David and Christine; a brother, Herman Statz of Sauk City; a sister, Bertilla Statz of Mt. Horeb; and many nieces and nephews. Armella was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, a son, Gerald, three sisters, Helen Statz, Margaret Wipperfurth and Antoinette Virnig and four brothers, Leo Oscar, Anthony, and Edmund.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Madison at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27 with Monsignor Michael Hippee presiding, and burial will be at St. Peters Cemetery, Ashton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Bernard Catholic Church or Nazareth House. The Gunderson East Funeral Home assisted the family.
RONALD HARVEY
Ronald Frank Harvey, Mt. Ida Township, died July 21, 2004.
He was born March 16, 1936 in Lincoln Nebraska, to Frank and Alice (Beckoff) Harvey.
He married Mary Jolene Story of February of 1958 in Thedford, Nebraska.
Surviving are five sons, Bradley Harvey, Mt. Hope, Doug (Jean) Harvey, Genoa, Alaska, Scott (Jackie) Harvey, Mt. Hope, Mike Harvey, Mt. Hope, Jim Harvey, Mt. Hope; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Pam (Jim) Hoffman, Austin, Texas and Joan Harvey, Argenia. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Joelene, June 4, 2000.
Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in the Thedford, Nebraska Cemetery. The Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore assisted the family.
NORMA MLSNA
Norma E. Mlsna, 67, of Tomah, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born Feb. 16, 1937 to Edward and Elinor (Sletten) Giese in Ontario, Wis. She was united in marriage to Alred Mlsna on Sept. 23, 1961 in Milwaukee.
Norma spent her working years at the Tomah VA Hospital. She enjoyed reading, working on her computer and spending time with her family. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary (Merlin) Mabb of Wauzeka; four grandchildren, Raymond, Jacob, Bethany and Sara McCullick, all of Wauzeka; a brother, Edwin (Jean) Giese of DeSoto; five sisters-in-law, Jane Giese of Ontatio, Lorraine (Eugene) Olson of Sparta, Adeline Clements of St.
Joseph's Ridge, Barbara Walker of Tomah and Charlotte (Byron) Schmitz of Sparta and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alred; her parents, Edward and Elinor; a brother, Everett Giese; a sister, Frieda Bauman; mother and father-in-law, William and Elizabeth Mlsna; brothers-in-law, Arnold Clements, Robert Walker and LaVerne Mlsna.
Services were Monday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tomah, Pastor William Rice and Pastor Martha Hampton officiating with burial in the Greenfield Cemetery, Tunnel City. The Torkelson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
JOANNE HANLEY
JoAnne (Vanderbilt) Hanley, 63, formerly of Prairie du Chien went to heavenly reward on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, after a valiant fight with cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Surviving are her husband, Gene; two sons, Mike and Rick Hanley; three daughters, Lori Hughes, Jolene and Kelly Hanley; 10 grandchildren, all of Janesville; a brother, Doug Vanderbilt; six sisters, Kaye Myers, Charlotte Smrcina, Arlene Dull, Julie Gabel, Becki Massey and Mary Stevens.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. with wake services at Schneider Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 2 from 4-8 p.m. in Janesville.
ORIS EVERSON
Oris Leroy Everson, 82 passed away early Sunday morning at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, after suffering a stroke early Saturday morning.
He was born June 6, 1922 on the Rust Farm in Rush Creek, Crawford County to Carl and Mabel (Rust) Everson.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Utica Lutheran Church. He attended Buck Creek School, Ferryville through eighth grade.
Oris was united in marriage to Geraldine Anderson on Feb. 16, 1944 at the Viroqua Parsonage by Pastor Haagensen. To this union one daughter, Wanda Everson was born.
He farmed on the Emerson farm on Nash Ridge for 30 years. In 1974 they moved to
Geraldine's home farm on South Buck Creek, Boma Ridge until his death.
He was an active member of Freeman Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and also enjoyed singing in the choir. He also served on the Crawford County ASCS Board. He enjoyed coon hunting with family and friends and watching ball games and playing his banjo.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine, Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home, Soldiers Grove; their daughter, Wanda Everson and fiance Roger Olson, Ferryville; special cousins Larry and Sandra Anderson, Ferryville, Mark and Sandy Anderson, Westby and cousins that grew up in Buck Creek, Alice Mickelson, Ferryville, Leonard Everson, Ferryville and Edwin Everson, Madison; numerous cousins and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mabel Everson and in-laws Joseph and Tillie Anderson; and also special cousins, Myrtle Everson Bishop, Erma Everson Anderson and Alfred Stovey.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Freeman Lutheran Church, Pastor Libby Howe officiating with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 Tuesday at the Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, with a 7:30 prayer service, Gays Mills and at the church on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until time of services.

Esther Geraghty, 98, of Marquette, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at 9th Street, Chautauqua in Charles, City, Iowa following a long illness.
ALICE BIERMAN
Alice M. Bierman 83, of Bloomington, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at her
home. She was born August 14, 1920, in rural Cassville, the daughter of Alois
and Alvina (Kluesner) Ploessl. Alice married Henry J. Bierman on September 5,
1939, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glen Haven. They farmed in the
Bloomington and Glen Haven areas until his death. She moved to her current home
in Bloomington in 1982. She was a member of St. Mary's Christian Mothers, the
Catholic Daughters, and the St. Jane Francis study club at St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Bloomington. She is survived by 11 children, Kay (Jack) Schmit,
Bloomington; Larry (Rita) Bierman, Fennimore; Susan (Charlie) Kitelinger,
Madison; Ginny Bierman, Lancaster; Bob (Nancy) Bierman, Glen Haven; Steve
Bierman, Mark (Deb) Bierman, and Mike (Carolyn) Bierman, all of Bloomington; Joe
(Cathy) Bierman, Prairie du Chien; Jim (Rose) Bierman, Lancaster; and Jeff
Bierman, La Crosse; 26 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Alvera (John) Bradley, Aurora, Ill.; and Mary (Tony) Runde, Hazel Green; three
brothers, Ralph (Margaret) Ploessl, Glen Haven; Gerald (Dolores) Ploessl,
Bloomington; and Dick (Fran) Ploessl, Galesburg, Ill.; and many nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, on June 30, 1979; one
son, Gary, on August 10, 1973; a brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Geraldine
Ploessl; and a brother, Gene Ploessl. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at
10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Eric Nielsen
officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will
be held Monday from 4 8 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington,
where a 4 p.m. CDA rosary and an 8 p.m. parish scripture service will be held.
Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the church. In lieu of
plants and flowers, an Alice M. Bierman memorial fund has bee
