2006 Obituaries

RUTH MENG
Ruth W. Meng 86, of Winneconne, and formerly of Bagley, passed away Monday December 25, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh.
She was born November 4, 1920, in Wyalusing Township, daughter of Erven and Edith (Franke) Havill.
She married John Meng on December 27, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1983. Together they farmed and after moving to Baldwin, Iowa, Ruth managed a tavern there.
She is survived by a daughter Doris (Darwin) Current of Omro, and a on Jack (Janet) Meng of Milwaukee; five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband one infant brother and a sister Doris.
Funeral services will be Friday, at 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien, with burial in the Bagley Cemetery in Bagley. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

MARY SABINS
Mary L. Sabins 78, of Prairie du Chien went to her Lord on Sunday, December 24, 2006, at the Bethany-St. Joseph's Care Center in La Crosse.
She was born September 12, 1928, in Davenport, Iowa daughter of William and Hazel (Mindham) Kane.
She married Ken DuCharme on April 30, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 3, 1977. She later married Louis Sabins on July 1, 1978. He preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 1988.
She worked at National Decorated Metals, The Memorial Hospital and Green Thumb Employment in Prairie du Chien. She later managed the Prairie City Bank in Seneca. She was an active member of the Eagles Club, the "Dingalings" and the Red Hat Society in Prairie du Chien. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by two sons, Michael "Mick" (A.J.) DuCharme of Steuben, and David DuCharme of La Crosse; a daughter; Kay (Gary) Kozelka of DeSoto; a brother Kenneth (Viola) Kane of Prairie du Chien, three sisters, Ruth Ertel of Prairie du Chien, Florence Folbrecht of Stoughton, and Rose Mason of Madison; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, an infant daughter, three brothers, Bernard, Paul and Raymond Kane along with two sisters, Alice Johnson and Ellen Potratz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Seneca, Rev. Eugene Wolf officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be an Eagles Club Auxiliary tribute at 7 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m., and also at the church hall on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. 

MATIAS PETTERA
Mathias G. "Matt" Pettera, 88, of Boscobel, passed away on Friday December 22,2006, at Merriter Hospital in Madison.
He was born on November 30, 1918, in Neilsville the son of George and Katheryn (Mueller) Pettera.
He married Margaret Crowley Dremesa on June 7, 1985, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel. Matt was a WWII Air Force veteran stationed in England. He is survived by his wife Margaret of Boscobel; six step-sons, Donald (Norma) Dremsa of Old Orchard Beach Maine, Douglas (Kilsa) Dremsa of Boscobel,Joseph (Machelle) Dremsa of Boscobel David (Tammy) Dremsa of Waukesha, Daniel Dremsa of Prairie du Chien, Michael (Cheri) Dremsa of Boscobel; six step-daughters, Rosemary (Dale) Hall of Steuben, Peggy (Stan) Updike of Boscobel, Theresa (Robert) Brewer of Boscobel, Lori (Gary) Hines Gays  Mills, Catherine (John) Sherman of Birmingham Alabama, Mary (Paul) Muenzenberger of Holman; fifty grandchildren 39 great-grandchildren three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Check of Prairie du Chien. He was preceded in death by a step-son Fred Dremsa Jr., one step-granddaughter, Darcy Hall along with one sister and two brothers.
A mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wauzeka, Father Eugene Wolfe officiating and burial was in the Boscobel Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Blake-Semrade American Legion and the Gilbertson-Pitzer VFW both of Boscobel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Boscobel Rescue Squad.  The Kendall Funeral Service In Boscobel is assisting the family.

VIRGINIA DOOLEY
Virginia M. "Ginny" Dooley, nee Bouzek, 70, beloved wife of Daniel T., devoted mother of Darren (Laura) and Ted (Tara). Loving grandmother of Chantel, Taylor, Ryan, and Maggie. Dear sister of Eugene (Colleen) Bouzek. Fond aunt of many, cherished daughter of the late Frank and Nettie Bouzek.
Funeral services are Friday at 9:15 from Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 5015 Lincoln Ave., Lisle, (on Route 53, 1/2 mile south of Ogden), to St. Joan of Arc Church, Mass at 10 a.m. Burial at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday from 3-9 p.m. Memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice will be appreciated. For service info call 630-964-9392.

L. LAUREL KAST
L. Laurel Kast, 96, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday December 13, 2006, at his son's home in Prairie du Chien.
He was born on January 24, 1910, in Crawford County to Louis and Wilma (Whiteaker) Kast.
He was married December 29, 1931, in Crawford County to Helen Anderson.  She preceded him in death on May 12, 1996.  He then was married March 4, 2002, in Monona, Iowa, to Laurie Bernhard.
Laurel lived in Crawford County most of his life where he ministered to many people. He is survived by his wife Laurie Kast of Prairie du Chien; daughter Sue (Dudley) Pippin of Madison; son, David (Annette) Kast of Prairie du Chien; four grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Vivian Kast of Rockford, Eveline Kast of Beloit. He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents and three brothers.
Services will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home in Boscobel, with Pastor Scott Jacobs officiating.  Burial will be at the Coleman-Whiteaker Cemetery, Bell Center. Friends may call Friday, from 5- to 8 p.m. at the Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home in Boscobel.

JANE FRALICK
Jane I. Fralick, 88 of Boscobel, passed away on Friday December 15, 2006, at the Boscobel Area Health Care in Boscobel.
She was born on June 3, 1918, in Boscobel, the daughter of Milton and Jane (Riley) Roberts.
She married Earl Fralick on March 3, 1939, in Dubuque Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 4, 1983.
She was a retired school teacher serving education for 41 years.
She is survived by one son Stephen Fralick of Boscobel; five Grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one sister Shirley Newlum of Oregon; a sister-in-law, Margaret Roberts of Seneca. She was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Jane Welsh, a grandson Sam Earl Fralick; four brothers and one sister.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Boscobel, Pastor Stan Pegram officiating with burial in the Boscobel Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials my be given to the Boscobel Fire Department, Boscobel Rescue Squad or the Boscobel Senior Meal Site. The Kendall Funeral Service in Boscobel is assisting the family.

GEORGE ROBERTS
George M. Roberts, 65 of Gays Mills passed away Saturday, December 9, 2006 at his home.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. January 18, 1941, son of George and Vera (Whitney) Roberts.
George was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the U.S.S. Boston. He belonged to the Boone American Legion Post 77 and was past Chaplain; he then transferred to McCormick Rose American Legion Post #308, Gays Mills; he was also a member of the VFW and the Moose Lodge.
George owned and operated a Roofing and Siding business for many years; and later tended bar at many locations.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children Lloyd (Belinda) Roberts, Julie (Ken) Spoden, Lance (Dawn) Roberts; step-children, Ann (Bob) Rood, Mark (Mary) Ballard, Lynn (Tom) Ozaki, Mike (Edith) Ballard, Sherrie (Alan) Sime, Herbert (Kindra) Copus, Kathy (Tim) Showen, Annette (Richard) Kirchoff, Michael Copus, Tim Copus, Rhonda Schoon, and Michael Schoon; by twenty nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; also by a sister Lillian (Mike) Luckfield; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-parents, Lloyd and Peggy Lyons; and by a brother Harry Roberts.
George was a proud bartender; and the nicest guy you'd ever have a drink with. "George never met a stranger."
A Celebration of George's life will be Saturday at Michael's Pub, Gays Mills, from 1 until 3 p.m. It is requested that flower memorials not be sent. Committal of Georges remains will be at a later date in the Bell Center Cemetery. The Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills is assisting the family.

WILMA STRAUMAN
Wilma Strauman, 95, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 24, 2006 following a short illness.
She was born in Prairie du Chien and grew up on a farm near the Mississippi River.
She moved to Tampa in 1952 and was employed for over 25 years as a department manager for W. T. Grant Store. Wilma was one of a group of friends who worked for many years known as ³The Grant Girls.'' They met regularly for outing, birthdays and trips for over 30 years.
A celebration of Wilma's life was November 5, at the Unity Church of Today.
Wilma is survived by her daughter Joan C. Strauman of Tampa, numerous nieces and nephews and her extended family. She was preceded in death by her five sisters and three brothers.

ZOLA BECWAR
Zola M. Becwar, 83, of Eastman, passed away Monday, December 11, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born October 13, 1923, in daughter of John and Estella (Huard) Ostrander.
She married Donald Becwar November 20, 1941, in Eastman. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1976.
Zola enjoyed fishing, playing cards and was a great practical joker.
She is survived by a son Gary (Judy) Becwar of Eastman; two daughters, Sharon (Wenceslaus) Mezera and Janice (Milo) Thornton both of Eastman; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Lavelle "Pal" Ostrander and one grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday December 14, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman, Rev. Tom Huff officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.

ERIC BREUER
Eric S. Breuer, 38, of Janesville, formerly of Patch Grove, died Friday, December 8, 2006, near Janesville.
He was born March 9, 1968, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Larry and Colleen (Lester) Breuer.
Eric lived in rural southwest Wisconsin near Patch Grove until 1985.
Eric then moved to Janesville, where he attended high school. He worked as a concrete finisher for J. P. Cullen, Inc. in Janesville, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and collector of shed whitetail and elk antlers.
Eric was well-known in the Janesville and Madison areas as one of the top and most highly sought after concrete finishers.
Eric was a wonderful father and treasured the time he was able to spend with his children.  He always put his children first, before his own needs, and was heavily involved in their school activities.  Eric would take his children bike riding, four-wheeling, and hiking, and would involve them in many other indoor and outdoor activities.
Eric is survived by his four children, Autumn, Forest, Sierra, and Leif, who live in Janesville; his mother and stepfather, Colleen (David) Anderson, Show Low, Ariz.; his father, Larry Breuer, Marquette; one brother, Bryan (Nicole) Breuer, Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Lisa Plotz, Woodman, and Lacey Anderson, Denver, Colo.; three step-brothers, Kevin (Machel) Anderson, Fort Lee, Va., Kirk Anderson, Conifer, Colo., and Kory Anderson, Portage; his step-grandfather, Leland Anderson, Bagley; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Dorothy Lester, Boscobel; and Julius and Paula Breuer, Patch Grove; and his step-grandmother, Elsie Anderson. There will be a private family visitation and funeral on Thursday, at the Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington with burial to follow in St. John's Cemetery, Patch Grove. An Eric S. Breuer memorial fund has been established for his children.

SHEILA BARNETT
Sheila Barnett age 68 of Prairie du Chien passed away unexpectedly Weds., Dec. 6, 2006. She was born Sept. 25, 1938 in Bermondsey, England, daughter of Harry and Nora (Black) Snell. She worked at Wyalusing Academy in Prairie du Chien for the past 15 years. Sheila was a member of the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Prairie du Chien, and was a devoted grandmother and gardener. She is survived by 3 sons; Chris (Jane) Barnett of Peosta, IA, Jon Barnett of Milwaukee, WI and Kevin Barnett of Akron, OH, 2 daughters; Kim Barnett of Prairie du Chien and Carol (Rob) Blascoe of Racine, WI her mother Nora Hughes of Warboys, England, 2 half sisters; Hazel Fielding and Phillipa Hughes both of Warboys, England, 6 grandchildren; Erica, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Kelli, David and Allison, along with 1 great grandchild Courtney. She was preceded in death by her father and a son Craig Barnett. A Memorial service will be held Sat., Dec. 9, 2006 at 3:30 PM at the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Prairie du Chien with Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Sat. Dec. 9, 2006 from 2:00 PM until the time of services. MARY THOMAS
Mary E. Thomas age 72 of rural Prairie du Chien passed away Sun., Nov. 26, 2006 at the Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI . She was born Jan. 16, 1934 in Eastman, WI, daughter of George and Veronica (Sprosty) Thomas. She was a member of St. JohnÍs Church and worked at the Opportunity Center in Prairie du Chien for over 30 years.
She is survived by 3 brothers; Leo (Thelma) Thomas of Johnson Creek, WI, Terry (Vivian) and Peter (Marijane) Thomas both of Prairie du Chien, a sister Georgia Eggleston of Canterbury, CT along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers; Joseph, Richard and Martin Thomas and a sister Margaret Braun.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thurs., Nov. 30, 2006 at 11:00 AM at St. JohnÍs Catholic Church, Rev. James Warosh S.J. officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Weds., Nov. 29, 2006 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a rosary at 4:00 PM and a wake scripture at 7:30 PM.

DONALD MINK
Donald Walter Mink, age 82, of Prairie du Chien, entered into Heaven on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.æ Donald was born on July 14, 1924, in Waterloo Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, to Adam and Julia (Elskamp) Mink.
On July 26, 1947, Donald was united in marriage to Mary L. Meyers at the Lancaster United Methodist Church. Donald enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served in the South Pacific during World War II. æHe later worked in Kenosha at American Motors. æIn 1962, he opened Don Mink Plumbing and Heating in Patch Grove, serving the area until 1984.æ Donald was a member of the United Methodist Church in Patch Grove, the American Legion Post No.5 of Patch Grove, and a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge in Bloomington He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Prairie du Chien; his children: Patricia (Phil) Kirschbaum, Patch Grove; Jim (Deb) Mink, Prairie du Chien; Cynthia (Larry) Busch, Patch Grove; Jeffrey (Lisa) Mink, Prairie du Chien; and Kim (John) Curtis, Patch Grove; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mae Day and Helen Leeser, both of Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Carole Mink, Alabama; many nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Virgil, Leland "Gus", Keith, Claude, and Herbert.
The funeral service to honor the life of Donald will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Patch Grove with Pastor Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington, and Thursday morning after 9:00 a.m. at the church. A Donald W. Mink memorial fund has been established.

EVELYN EGGERT
Evelyn B. Eggert, 91, of Prairie du Chien, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien following a long illness.
Evelyn was born November 12, 1915, in Minneapolis, Minn. to Albert and Alvina (Poch) Eggert. She lived in Milwaukee for a time and later moved to Prairie du Chien in 1967.
She worked as a nurse assistant and later at Jeffer's Black Angus Supper Club. She was one of the original residents of River Crest Apartments where she lived for 26 years, before moving to Prairie Maison.
Evelyn is survived by two nieces, Judith Jacobson of E. Troy, Sue (Chip) Gentz, and a nephew William (Mardell) Winter, both of Prairie du Chien; grand niece Dawn (Jon) Paul, grand nephews, Barry Winter, Alex (Lisa) Dearborn, Marc Jacobson, great-grand niece Callie Paul, great grand-nephews, Issac Dearborn, Cole Paul and Max Dearborn. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, A. Ruth Winter, Michell Moorhatch and Frederick Eggert.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family.

ELEANOR MOON
Eleanor I. Moon, 81, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, December 4, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 15, 1925, in Buena Vista, Iowa, daughter of Ernie and Lillie (Maybee) Martin.
She married Elmer Moon on April 9, 1949, in Prairie du Chien.
She worked at National Decorated Metals, Burgess Cellulose and later for 3M Company in Prairie du Chien. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary and the Royal Neighbors. Eleanor brought endless joy and happiness to all that knew her throughout her life. She was a ray of sunshine, full of energy and was a lady of many interests and talents.
She is survived by her husband and best friend of over 57 years, Elmer Moon of Prairie du Chien; a son Ernie (Gloria) Moon of Willow Springs, Ill.; a daughter Carol (Ken) Osmer of Cottage Grove, six grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Kapinus and Hazel Lechnir both of Prairie du Chien; a brother Basil (Carla) Martin of LaCrosse; many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, at 10 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Paul Graham officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home where there will be an American Legion Auxiliary tribute at 4:30 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home.

ETHEL WARD
Ethel M. Ward, 81, of Boscobel, formerly of Mt. Sterling, passed away Tuesday December 5, 2006 at Boscobel Area Health Care Boscobel. 
She was born on July 16, 1925 in Marietta Twp. to Loren and Esther(Kast) Curtis.
She was married to Ronald Ward and he preceded her death in 1985.
She is survived by Daughter Margy(Jim) Durbin of Apppleton 4 sons  Carl Ward of Harpers Ferry, IA.  Russell(Elvie) Ward of Shamrock, TX. David (Debbie) Ward of Wauzeka Richard Ward of Shamrock, TX 17 Grandchildren, 13 Great grandchildren Daughter-in-law Marlene Ward of Mt. Sterling

ARLENE HUBKA
Arlene (Ready) Hubka passed away at the Prairie Memorial Hospital on November 19, following a short illness.
She was born November 7, 1925 the daughter of George and Lydia Ready. She was born in Plum Creek and later moved to Bagley and attended grade school there. She graduated from B.A. Kennedy High School in Prairie du Chien in 1943.
She married Leon Hubka on December 26, 1947. They had two sons, Donald and Rodney. They lived most of their life in Muskego where Leon was a barber and Arlene was a housewife and mother.
They enjoyed many interesting trips through the U.S. They were members of the Presbyterian Church for 50 years where Arlene served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
She is survived by her son Rodney and wife Bonnie and their two children of Moorhead, Minn., Don's wife Jean and their five children and two great-grandchildren, four of Muskego; also a sister Dolores Oswald and nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law John Jones and special friends Dorothy Konichek and Bernice Fuller of Prairie du Chien.

ANGEL KEHOE
Angel GraciAnn Kehoe infant daughter of Nathan and Heather (Backes) Kehoe passed away unexpectedly Sunday, November 12, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

MARIAN YANNA
Marian "Ginny" V. Yanna 72, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday November 20, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 2, 1934, in Beetown, daughter of Harrison and Marie (Reed) Robinson.
She married Roger Yanna on July 20, 1957, in Lancaster.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years Roger of Prairie du Chien, three sons, Donald Yanna of Sheboygan, Kenneth Yanna of Swisher, Iowa and Steven Yanna of Portage; two sisters, Charlotte Gilbertson of Galena, Ill. and Betty Roush of Garland, Texas; two grandchildren Jessica and Bryan Yanna. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Iva Watters, Mary Tremelling and Ruby Moseman, a brother Marvin Robinson and two half brothers; Melvin and Raymond Robinson, along with a grandson Justin Yanna.
Funeral services were Friday at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel with James Griffis officiating, with burial in the Rock Church Cemetery in Livingston.

LELAND PERRIN
Leland J. Perrin, 91, of Bloomington, died Monday, November 20, 2006, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.
He was born on July 4, 1915, in Waterloo Township, Potosi, to James and Minnie (Rech) Perrin.
Leland was united in marriage to Vivian Durnen on April 18, 1942, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington.
He was a long time Bloomington area farmer with Registered Angus cattle and he also had an interest in training and racing trotters and pacers.
Leland has held offices in the Registered Angus Association and the United States Trotting Association.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian, of Lancaster; two sisters, Dorothy Okey of Dubuque, Iowa, and Ruth (Woodie) Grisham of Saledo, Texas; special friends, Rosann Horkheimer and Iola Knutson, both of Bloomington; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Charles, Frank, Virgil, and Donald Perrin; and two sisters, Opal Lewis and Lucille Ackerman.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington. The Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington assisted the family.

LAWRENCE NUSSBAUM
Lawrence Paul Nussbaum, 85, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, November 23, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 12, 1921, in Yale, Mich., son of George and Hillary (Wells) Nussbaum.
He served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the European Theatre.
He married Marcella Shulka on June 15, 1949, at St. Gabriel's Church in Prairie du Chien.
Paul worked for the City of Prairie du Chien in the Street Department for many years until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed traveling after retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Marcie Nussbaum of Prairie du Chien; a daughter Linda (Harvey) Zabel of Prairie du Chien; four grandchildren, Sandy (Stuart) Seffrood of S. Wayne, Nancy (Chris) French of Fennimore, Gail (Chad) Winkers of Platteville, and Harley Zabel of Prairie du Chien.
Funeral services were Saturday, at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. John Wambach S.J. officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Military Rites were accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

DIAN EMERSON
Dian Emerson 70, formerly of Janesville, passed away November 16, 2006, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Dian was born September 8, 1936, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Warren and Mary Louise Pier Shawley.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 52 years Darwin E. Emerson; her four adoring daughters Cindy, Sandy, Sheri and Sue; two sisters, Todd Schott of Englewood, Fla., Lee Graap of Janesville; a sister and brother-in-law Molly and Eugene Drallmeir of Plover ; five Grandchildren, Joey, Christy, Sara, Katie and Sarah and several nieces and nephews. Di was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her brother Philip Shawley, two daughters Cris and Angela and Grandson Jason.
Services were held on November 19, at the Higgens-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland, Ohio. Dian was loved by all whose life she touched.

NANCY BAILEY
Nancy L. Bailey, 72, of Marshfield, died Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at the House of the Dove in Marshfield.
She was born March 11, 1934, in Beloit, the daughter of Herbert and Genevieve Hill Binger.
She was a 1952 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. Nancy married Don D. Bailey on August 23, 1953, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Beloit.
Nancy was a professional artist as well as being a secretary. Nancy was also a photo oil colorist for R. G. Sharpe in Beloit in the early 1950's. Nancy and Don lived in California for 16 years as well as 16 years in Prairie du Chien. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky five years before they retired and moved back to Wisconsin to retire in a log cabin at Castle Rock Estates, near Mauston.
While living in California she was active in the Women's Civic Club and helped with the Bloodmobile. She even designed posters for the blood drive.
Surviving are two children, a son Mark (Marilyn) Bailey of Marshfield, and a daughter Christina (Greg), Filburn of Louisville, Kentucky; three grandchildren, James and Jeffery Bailey of Marshfield, and Kayla Bailey of Hutchinson, Minn.; one great- grandchild, Rhian Tucker of Hutchinson, Minn.; one niece, Cindy (Bud) Geers of Wauconda, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents and two sisters.
Funeral Services were Saturday, in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, with the Deacon Rev. Georgeanne Cusic officiating. RUTH SOLBERG
Ruth B. Solberg, 74 of rural Ferryville, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at the Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove where she had lived since May of 2005.
She was born on her family farm near Richmond, Ill., May 3, 1932, the daughter of Einar and Esther (Anderson) Behrents.
Ruth graduated from Richmond-Burton High School in 1950. She started her college education at Carthage College; then graduated from UW Stout in 1950.
She married Ernest L. Solberg on June 8, 1957 in Abbotsford. They farmed in Crawford County; and during this time Ruth taught at Seneca Schools until she became the Crawford County Extension Agent; following this time, she taught at North Crawford High School for 25 years; and was past president of the Teachers Education Association. She retired from teaching in 1990.
Ruth was very active in church life at Utica Lutheran Church; teaching Sunday School, and as a past president of W.E.L.C.A. Her hobbies when she had the time were sewing, quilting and family history.
Surviving are her son Donald (Cathy) Solberg of Chevy Chase, Md.; and her daughter, Janet (Peter) Rowe of Kirkland, Wash.; and by two grandsons, Matthew and Aaron Rowe; two sisters, Phyllis (Robert) Johnson of Eau Claire and Joyce (Joe) Pearson of Warrens; other relatives, friends and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest on Oct. 18, 2006 and her daughter, Carolyn on August 22, 2006.
Funeral services were Monday at Utica Lutheran Church, Pastor Gary Wees officiating with burial in the church cemetery. The Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills assisted the family. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to Utica Lutheran Church.

ARLOWYN KELLER
Arlowyn M. Keller, (nee Ostrander) Milwaukee, unexpectedly died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 83 years.
She was born in Seneca June 23, 1923, and lived most of her life in Milwaukee.
She attended Seneca High School and in 1940 married Orlyn and moved to the "big city" (Milwaukee) in the early 50's.
Arlowyn with her husband Orlyn in the late 50's early 60's owned Keller Trucking where she drove a 10 ton asphalt truck and was involved in resurfacing hundreds of streets, avenues and boulevards in the city of Milwaukee. Together they hauled asphalt from May thru November, then hauled semi-trailers loaded with fuel oil. Orlyn and Arlowyn also owned a tavern. Whoever got home first opened up the place and they ran until midnight. They were up again at 5 a.m. to be at the trucking jobsite by 6 a.m. Arlowyn began driving in 1949 when their trucks were on a gravel job and ran short of drivers.
After her husband died in 1966 she subsequently took a job at J.C. Penny's warehouse from which she retired after 20 years.
She is survived by her loving children Barbara Sutton (Virgil deceased), Marilyn Rybacki, Howard (Judith) and Ronald (Deborah), sister of Donald (Elaine) Ostrander; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Arloyn was preceded in death by her husband, Orlyn; father and mother Ed and Ethel Ostrander (nee Sterling) and brother Leighton (Caroline), granddaughter Kelli Mutluck, great-granddaughter Danika Ketterhagen and good friend Jerry Michalak.
Visitation will be at the John J. Wallock Funeral Home Tuesday from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. with graveside services at Arlington Cemetery.

FRANKLIN FISCHER
Franklin "Frank" D. Fischer, 72, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at his home after a short illness.
He was born March 5, 1934, in Prairie du Chien, son of Jake and Loretta (Strauman) Fischer.
He married Elaine Stluka on May 4, 1963, at St. John's Church in Prairie du Chien. He worked as a butcher for the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store for 17 years and later at 3M Company in Prairie du Chien until his retirement in 1996 after 27 years.
He served in the Army National Guard for 13 years, was a member of the Eagles Club and the Knights of Columbus. He loved playing cards, bowling and cooking. Frank was an avid football and basketball fan and enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years Elaine of Prairie du Chien; two daughters, Janet (Martin) Kirschbaum of Glen Haven, and Maureen (Robert) McCarty of Hot Springs, S.D.; two sons, Andrew of Cottage Grove, Minn. and Daryl of Platteville; four sisters, Loretta Colgan of Big Rock, Ill., Mamie Bluhm of Prairie du Chien, Patricia (Gene) Taylor of Clinton, and Mary Wilkinson of Duncan, Okla.; three brothers, Don (Delores) and John (Betty) both of Prairie du Chien and Alfred of Maysville, N.C. along with three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Carl, Robert, Richard and Victor along with a sister Lucille.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, Rev. James Warosh S.J. officiating with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family. The Knights of Columbus Rosary was at 7 p.m., an Eagles Club Tribute at 7:30 p.m. and a wake scripture at 8p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Prairie Catholic Schools, Prairie du Chien Rescue Squad or the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospice Program.

HILDA STEIGER
Hilda A. Steiger, 90, of Bloomington, died Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at Grant Regional Health Center.
She was born May 20, 1916, in Cassville, the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Mumm) Esser.
She graduated from Cassville High School and then attended nursing school in Dubuque, Iowa.
On April 24, 1939, she married John Steiger in Cassville. Together they farmed all of their lives in the Bloomington area.
She is survived by three children, Jim (Maryann) Steiger, Bagley, Gene (Betty) Steiger, Bloomington, and Bob (Carol ) Steiger, Bloomington; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marge Herbers, Bloomington; two sisters-in-law: Alma Esser, Lancaster; and Viola Steiger, Woodstock, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on November 18, 1977; her parents; five brothers: Carl, Vince, Lee, John, and Bernard Esser; and one sister, Irma Burke.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 4 ­ 7 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington, where a 4 p.m. rosary will be held. CARL MESSERLI
Carl J. Messerli 83, of rural Prairie du Chien passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born February 9, 1923, in Bridgeport Township, son of Walter and Edna (Waller) Messerli.
He married Ann Pulvermacher on November 20, 1944, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Boscobel. He farmed most of his life in the area.
He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Ann Messerli of Prairie du Chien; five daughters, Sharon Stagman, Darlene (Jack) Kellogg, Donna (Gene) Bedward and Judy (Randy) Halverson all of Prairie du Chien, Bonnie (Fred) Sautter of Farley, Iowa; a son Dennis (Cindy) Messerli of Janesville; a brother Louis (Betty) Messerli of Clinton, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Clarence Stagman, a sister Evelyn Messerli and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be Friday, at 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. James Warosh S.J. officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. ALICE GIESE
Alice A. Giese 86, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Marquette, Iowa passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at the Prairie Maison Care Center in Prairie du Chien. She was born January 16, 1920, in Columbus, daughter of Richard and Linda (Tiedt) Moore. She married Wayne Giese on February 14, 1945, in Columbus. They moved to Marquette in 1956 where Alice worked as a waitress for the Pink Elephant Supper Club until her retirement in 1984. She and Wayne then moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they spent the past 20 years. She enjoyed golf, crafting, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 61 years Wayne Giese of Prairie du Chien; three sons, Mark (Bernie) of Dubuque, Iowa, Dennis (Deb) of Peosta, Iowa and Tim (Janet) of Prairie du Chien; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Donald and Lefty Moore. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2006, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

June A. Voelzke 82, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, November 6, 2006, at the Prairie Maison Care Center in Prairie du Chien . She was born June 7, 1924, in Warrens, daughter of Riley and Eva (Vromen) Hart. She married Lyle Voelzke on June 7, 1944, at St. PaulÕs Church in Monona, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1991. She worked as a foreman for McGregor Electronics for many years. She is survived by her daughter Lana (Mark) Gratace of Prairie du Chien; two brothers, Ronald (Judy) Hart of Machesney Park, Ill., and Kenny (Ethal) Hart of Tomah; nine sisters, Arja Welch, Bonnie Schubert and Patty Arnot all of Milwaukee, Donna Cotman of Germantown, Arlieta Finegan of River Grove, Ill., Beverly Wood and Rita (Rubert) Zahrte both of Rockford, Ill., Verna Burrows of Holmen, and Betty (David) Muehlenkamp of Oakdale; a granddaughter Christine (Matt) Alioto of LaCrescent, Minn.; two step-granddaughters, Michelle (Travis) Geuder of Guttenberg, Iowa and Marcia Gratace of New York, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren and two great-step- grandchildren. EDNA CARL
Edna M. Carl, 92, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, November 2, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien memorial Hospital. She was born January 16, 1914, in Millville, daughter of Ernest and Etta (Stimpson) Braudt. She married Edward Carl on June 24, 1936, in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1995. Edna lived in Prairie du Chien most of her life, working briefly in Chicago as a nanny before she married. She worked as a cook at various places in Prairie du Chien, including the General Hospital and Memorial Hospital. She liked fishing, crocheting, playing slot machines and putting puzzles together. Edna enjoyed being with her friends, playing cards and sharing stories about her family. She will be remembered for her tender heart, her warm smile, and her sweet personality. She is survived by a daughter Connie (Dan) Haas of Sun Prairie, three sons, Melvin (Mary Jo) Carl of La Crosse, Gerald (Judy) Carl of LuVerne, Minn., and Dennis (Bette) Carl of Woodland Park, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Rodney, two brothers, Louis and Roy Braudt, two sisters, Elta Jeidy and Gladys Steiger, one grandchild and one great- grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. ROY ULISH
Roy J. Ulish, 92, of McGregor, formerly of Monona, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at Great River Care Center in McGregor following a lengthy illness. Private family graveside services were held in the Monona City Cemetery on November 4. Roy John Ulish was born on August 24, 1914, in rural Monona, Iowa, the son of John G. and Flossie (Koth) Ulish. He attended Giard #2 rural school Monona. On November 28, 1939, he married Rosa Voss Lotza in Monona. Roy lived most of his life on the Century Farm his great-grandfather, Casper Ulish, bought in 1854. His grandfather, Phillip Ulish, lived there and farmed the land as did his father, John Ulish. He farmed with horses over 72 years and had a special love for Belgians and Percherons. Over the years it was a weekly event to see Roy and his horses on their way to Monona to have corn ground for his animals. Roy worked for John Kerndt in Waukon for several years. He enjoyed collecting antiques throughout his life and had a special collection of Aladdin Lamps. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosa who died in 1981; and a sister, Helen.

MARCUS HOFFLAND
Benjamin Marcus Hoffland, 90, died Thursday, October 19, 2006, in Mesa, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Muriel B. Hoffland; his two daughters, Maureen (Walter) Lamas and Jean (Ron) Luecke; his three grandchildren, Carrie (Peter) Honerbaum, Andrea Luecke, Randall Luecke; one great-grandchild, Elle; two sisters, Freida Gorman, Doris Ianitelli and two brothers, Donald and Howard Hoffland. Marcus was born in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin on January 17, 1916. He owned several different businesses in Wisconsin including the La Crosse Motel in La Crosse, Wisconsin before retiring in Mesa, Arizona in 1972. He and Muriel had a home in Sunland Village for 30 years. A Memorial Service and burial took place Monday at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Rd. Scottsdale.

MARIAN BOTHMER
Marian Adeline Bothmer, 75, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Marquette, Iowa, died Saturday October 28, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McGregor with Fr. Richard Gaul officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the Church. Marian was born in Calmar Iowa on June 3, 1931, to William and Agnus (Neugel) Shimek. She married Clyde "Sonny" Bothmer on June 21, 1952. Marian attended school in Calmar. She worked at Prairie Health Care in the Activities Dept for 22 years, retiring in 1985.Ê She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.Ê She loved spending time with her two great- grandchildren. Survived by a granddaughter, Teena (Wayne) Miller Beinborn of Prairie du Chien; two great-grandchildren, Cassandra & Zachary Beinborn; three siblings, Lorraine (Vince) Williams of Kansas City, Mo.; William (Jayne) Shimek of Decorah; Jerome (Lucille) Shimek of Spillville. Marian was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, three children, Clydene Miller, Timothy and Jeffery Bothmer, and one great-granddaughter Samantha Baker. ARLENE MELVIN
Arlene Diane Melvin, 52, of Wauzeka and formerly of McGregor, died Sunday October 29, 2006, of heart and kidney complications at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Arlene was born in San Bernadino, California on June 12, 1954, to Maurice and Helen (Kato) Melvin. Arlene graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1972, she was also a graduate of the Calmar Nursing School. She formerly worked as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. Arlene loved to travel, she especially loved her niece and nephew, Megan and Kevin Leis, her two dogs Scamper and Unicorn, and all the friends she had through the years. Arlene loved to joke and laugh at life. Also she enjoyed gardening and her home had many plants and flowers. She loved all animals including horses, dogs and cats that she had through the years. Arlene was an organ donor and someone will see, since her eyes were donated and the rest of her body, to science. She will be missed by all her family and friends. Arlene is survived by her mother, Helen Melvin of McGregor; one sister, Joyce Leis and her children Megan and Kevin Leis II of Boscobel; two aunts, Caroline Thompson of Inverness Fla., Josephine Calaguire of Long Island N.Y.; one uncle Joseph Kato of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous cousins in Alaska, Oklahoma, California, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Iowa. BETTY REED
Betty Reed, 85, of Lynxville, died Monday, October 30, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Seneca United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Dickson Ridge Cemetery near Lynxville. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien. Friends may also call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Betty Jean was born in Maywood, Illinois on December 26, 1920, to Roy & Eva (Heligas) Griffin. She married Fred Reed on June 12, 1946, in Gays Mills. Her Mother died when Betty was a young woman, and her aunt, Mayme Allen, became her mother figure. Betty enjoyed being out and about and never let the engine cool on her car. Highway 35 between Lynxville and Prairie du Chien was a heavily traveled route for Betty, who never let gas prices or weather keep her off the road. She stopped at all garage sales, and visited many sick friends, often bringing them goodies. She loved reading, gardening, fishing and painting. Most of all, Betty enjoyed her family. She is survived by four children: Michael (Patricia) Reed of Prairie du Chien, Maureen (Steve) Ware of Appleton, William (Karen) Reed of Lansing, Iowa, Jerry (Stacey) Reed of Ferryville. Nine grandchildren, Ben, Tarra, Maren, Heather, Adam, Stephen, Jarrod, Jenny and Michael. Three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Trinity and Cort. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son Thomas who died in 2006.

EUGENE MERGEN
Eugene C. Mergen, 82, of Bloomington, died on Saturday, October 28, 2006, at the Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. He was born on October 5, 1924, at Glen Haven to Peter and Susan (Nieses) Mergen. On August 6, 1942, Gene was united in marriage to Marjorie Chapman at Prairie du Chien. Four children were born to this union. He entered into the United State Army Calvary on March 31, 1945, and was honorably discharged on March 4, 1946. For over twenty years, Gene owned and operated Mergen's Tavern in Glen Haven, and owned and operated a fleet of school busses, delivering children to the Bloomington Public Schools district and the Catholic schools in Bloomington and Glen Haven for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, and most of all, Gene enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington and the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Bloomington; his children, Suzanne (Tom) Barr of Dodgeville; Jill (Tom) Errthum of Bloomington; Jack (Mary) Mergen of Muscatine, Iowa; Dan Mergen of Maquoketa, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; brother, Leo Mergen of Lancaster; sister-in-law, Imogene Mergen of Madison; brother-in-law, Frank Patcle of Potosi; nieces, nephews; other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Barr and a great-granddaughter, Tegan Emma Copeland; four brothers and six sisters. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating. ALICE CARL
Alice Carl 83, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, October 28, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born May 14, 1923, in Bridgeport Township, daughter of Robert and Emma (Tillie) Carl. She grew up on the family farm in rural Bridgeport. Alice later worked at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital from 1973 until her retirement in 1990 where she was awarded Employee of the Year. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Ed, George and Jim Carl. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Paul Graham officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.

FLORENCE LESSARD
Florence J. "T-Bear" Lessard, 92, of Prairie du Chien died Saturday morning, October 28, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a Parish Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Florence was born in Crawford County Wisconsin on September 07, 1914, to Walter and Anna (Stahl) Valley. She married Ronard Lessard, he preceded her in death in 1973. Over the years Florence had worked at the Canning Factory, McGregor Electronics and for a Clamming Business.Ê She loved to embroider, play cards, Bingo and visit with friends. Florence is survived by one sister-in-law, Wilma Valley of Prairie du Chien. A very special friend, Harold Smith of West Union, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. Florence was preceded in death by her husband Ronard, and all five of her siblings, Mabel, Evelyn, Mary, Elmer and Robert.

ARTHUR ATKINSON
Arthur Atkinson, 78, of Seneca passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2006, at the UW Hospital in Madison. He was born April 18, 1928, in Bayside, N.Y., son of Paul and Margaret (Fox) Atkinson. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a graduate of Toledo University and later went on to receive a Masters in Business Administration. He married Alberta Arenz on December 31, 1969, at Houghton, Michigan. He worked as a corporate credit manager for several companies and later taught at North Crawford, Seneca and Prairie du Chien High Schools. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Lions Club. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Alberta Atkinson of Seneca; three sons, Timothy (Colette) Atkinson of Denver, Colo., Greg (Sally) Inda of Onalaska, and Matthew Inda of La Crosse; three daughters, Erin Atkinson of California, Jane (Jay) Babich of Riverdale, N.J. and Cynthia Fleischman of La Crosse; a brother Kenneth (Janet) Atkinson of Buffalo, N.Y.; a sister Dorothy (Ed) Johnston of Missouri along with nine grandchildren, Ian, Michael, Paul, Emily, Jeffrey, Hannah, Ari, Jake and Kylie. Joseph Peter Moris, 81, a resident of Willow Gardens Care Center, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, following a short illness. ARLENE MELVIN
Arlene Diane Melvin, 52, of Wauzeka and formerly of McGregor, died Sunday October 29, 2006, of heart and kidney complications at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Arlene was born in San Bernadino, California on June 12, 1954, to Maurice and Helen (Kato) Melvin. Arlene graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1972, she was also a graduate of the Calmar Nursing School. She formerly worked as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien. Arlene loved to travel, she especially loved her niece and nephew, Megan and Kevin Leis, her two dogs Scamper and Unicorn, and all the friends she had through the years. Arlene loved to joke and laugh at life. Also she enjoyed gardening and her home had many plants and flowers. She loved all animals including horses, dogs and cats that she had through the years. Arlene was an organ donor and someone will see, since her eyes were donated and the rest of her body, to science. She will be missed by all her family and friends. Arlene is survived by her mother, Helen Melvin of McGregor; one sister, Joyce Leis and her children Megan and Kevin Leis II of Boscobel; two aunts, Caroline Thompson of Inverness Fla., Josephine Calaguire of Long Island N.Y.; one uncle Joseph Kato of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous cousins in Alaska, Oklahoma, California, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Iowa. DELORES HIRD
Delores F. Hird, 65, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Boscobel, passed away Friday, October 20, 2006, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born March 11, 1941 in Oregon, Ill., daughter of Daniel and Winifred (Tripp) Coy.
She married Gene Hird on March 30, 1957. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 2002. She had her own upholstery business and enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery and fishing. She was very active in her children's activities, serving as a den mother and assisting with the 4H Club. She was also an active member of the Boscobel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter Deanna Hird of Columbia, Tenn.; four sons, Daniel and David (Lori) both of Prairie du Chien, Dennis (Barb) of Seneca, and Donald (Jamie) of Boscobel; her mother Winifred Coy of Boscobel; a sister Connie (Allen) Matthes of Prairie du Chien; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, 2 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Stan Pegram officiating, with burial in the Evergreen cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

ERNEST SOLBERG
Ernest L. Solberg, 87, rural Ferryville, passed away at the Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua.
He had been a resident at Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home, Soldiers Grove.
Ernest was born on the home farm, rural Ferryville on December 8, 1918, son of Sever and Anna Carolyn (Munson) Solberg.
He married Ruth Behrents on June 8, 1957 in Abbotsford. They farmed the home farm most of their married life, and Ernest was a supervisor at the Westby Coop Creamery for many years. He was a lifetime member of Utica Lutheran Church where he was on the church council and was church treasurer for several years, he also was a member of the Church Men's Choir. He spent several years on the REA Board and the Gays Mills School Board.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, currently a resident at Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home; a son, Donald (Cathy) Solberg, Chevy Chase, Md.; a daughter, Janet (Peter) Rowe of Kirkland, Wash.; and by two grandsons, Matthew and Aaron Rowe; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Carolyn on August 22, 2006 and by six brothers, Adolph, Clarence, Arthur, Earl, Monroe, and Russell; and five sisters, Roselly Solberg, Ruth Olson, Blanche Larson, Stella Tisthammer and Gladys Youngman.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Utica Lutheran Church, Pastor Gary Wees officiating with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday at the Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills from 4-7 p.m. and at the church Saturday from noon until services. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to Utica Lutheran Church.

CHARLOTTE WILLARD
Charlotte M. Willard, 86, of Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien.
She was born March 27, 1920, in rural Lynxville, the daughter of Fred and Amanda (Homuth) Sutton.
On March 27, 1941, she married Max Willard. The couple lived in Wyalusing Township until Max's death on May 4, 1977.
|Charlotte was a homemaker and assisted her husband in a hatchery and feed business. She was interested in gardening, flowers, animals, and birds and loved the out of doors.
She is survived by one brother, Fay Sutton, Akron, Ohio; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband and parents, were her sisters, Frieda Ghelifi and Cora Sutton; and one brother, Lorenz Sutton.
Funeral services were held on Friday, at the Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington with Reverend Paul Graham officiating. Burial was in Brodtville Cemetery, Wyalusing Township. 

BEULAH EGSTAD
Beulah Marie "Boots" Egstad, passed away on October 14th, at Four Winds Manor in Verona.
She was born on May 6, 1938, in Antigo. Her parents were Martin H. and Marie M. Holzem of Middleton. Boots grew up in Middleton, and graduated from Middleton High School in 1956. She attended one year of college at UW-Platteville and majored in art.
She met Howard Egstad in Middleton and they married on June 27th, 1959. Boots worked at Cuna Mutual Insurance until moving to Prairie du Chien in 1969, where they began a successful shoe store business together. Boots opened a women's clothing store in the mid 1970's by the name of Mode O'Day. They both obtained their real estate licenses in 1978 and developed Egstad Realty Company through the mid 1980's.
They moved to Madison in 1987, where Boots returned to work at Cuna Mutual. She worked at Cuna for 15 years as an underwriter until Parkinson's disease limited her mobility. Boots battled Parkinson's for six years.
She is survived by her husband Howard and her three sons Edward (Sara), William (Glenda), and Gary (Amie), and six grandchildren Christina, Candi, Shawn, Erin, Colleen, and Kelly, and four great-grandchildren Zane, Shayla, Morgan, and Connor, two sisters Jane and Ruth, and a brother Marty, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at the JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. Chaplain Steve Zwettler will officiate with inurnment in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home until the time of service.

DR. JAMES HARTLEY
Dr. James C. Hartley, 67, of Waukon, Iowa, formerly of New Albin, Iowa, died Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Albin. James Charles Hartley was born on June 22, 1939, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Charles E. and Marion (Ryan) Hartley. He grew up in the New Albin area, being baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and attending Clear Creek rural elementary school. In 1957 he graduated from Waukon High School where he was active in 4-H and FFA. Jim continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, where he received a B.S. in Dairy Husbandry, an M.S in Dairy Microbiology, and a Ph.D. in Food Technology.
His working career was dedicated to quality control in food processing. He began in Davenport, Iowa, then served as a research and teaching assistant at Iowa State while he earned his advanced degrees. He moved on to the University of Kentucky where his duties included spending several months in Uruguay as a consultant for the Organization of American States to improve milk quality. Jim worked in Omaha and Columbus, Nebr., from 1976 until 1983, where he headed up the quality assurance and new product development divisions for two major food marketers.
For the next 12 years he was Quality Control Manager for Schnuck Markets, Inc. of St. Louis, Mo., overseeing all of their laboratory procedures. In 1995, health complications forced retirement from his career and he returned to New Albin to be closer to his family.
Jim maintained an active pace throughout his life. He was a member of numerous professional and academic associations related to the dairy and food industries. No matter where he was living, he stayed in close contact with his home area of New Albin and returned as often as possible to enjoy the outdoors, whether that be hunting, fishing or helping on the farm. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed skiing, bowling and traveling and had developed particular skills in the areas of woodworking and photography.
Survivors include his mother, Marion Hartley of New Albin; a brother, Joseph (Joan) Hartley of Seneca, Wis.; a sister, Mary Ellen (Lyle) Mohwinkle of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Nancy Hartley of New Albin; and numerous nieces and nephews. MARY FARRELL
Mary Emma Farrell 59, of Mt. Hope, died Friday October 13, 2006, at her home following a long illness.

She is survived by her husband Mike; two daughters Michelle Farrell and friend Wayne Hanson of Boscobel, Megan (Pat) Hill of Prairie du Chien, special cousin Betty Curtis of Prairie du Chien; she was preceded in death by her parents, and two sons, Michael Jr. and Mark.
Mary was born June 7, 1947, in Prairie du Chien to Wilson and Leona (Ingle) Palmer. She grew up in the Millville area and graduated from West Grant High School in 1965. She married Michael Farrell on September 16, 1972, in Boscobel.  She worked as a telephone switchboard operator in Prairie du Chien and continued with learning computer programming in Milwaukee. She also worked in Madison at the Dept. of Revenue, the Crawford County Clerks office, WalMart, McGregor Loud Speaker, and most recently in the telephone sales dept. of Land's End in Dodgeville.

LAVERNE JELINEK
LaVerne C. Jelinek 77, of Onalaska, and formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away peacefully Monday, October 9, 2006, at his home.
He was born January 2, 1929, in Prairie du Chien, son of Anthony and Marie (Cautman) Jelinek.
He married Ramona Ward on October 7, 1950.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea. He worked at the Farm Service Company in Prairie du Chien over 40 years and served as a member of the Prairie du Chien Fire Dept., the American Legion and the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. LaVerne enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by three daughters, Diane (Ron) Pitzer of Eastman, Gail (Travis) Sumpter of Wauzeka, and Cindy (Greg) Rooney of Prairie du Chien; a son Richard (Tracy) Jelinek of Bossier City, La.; three brothers. Larry (Sis) of Prairie du Chien, Greg (Vonnie) of Sherrill, Iowa and Adrian (Betty) of Black River Falls; a sister Sophie Stankus of Prairie du Chien; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, his longtime companion Camille Ingle of Onalaska, along with her sons Doug and Dave and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Edmund and Cyril along with two sisters, Josephine Stumpner and Marie Colson Heisz and two grandchildren Jeremy Pitzer and Michael Jelinek.
Funeral services will be Friday, at 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien, with Rev. Hubert Boschert officiating. Military Rites will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. WILLARD SMETHURST
Willard J. Smethurst, 88, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Eastman, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2006, at the Onalaska Care Center, Onalaska.
He was born December 16, 1917, in Eastman, son of Harley and Martha (Becwar) Smethurst. He married Janet Bean on June 27, 1951.
He worked as a machinist for JIK's Tractor Works and later for Styberg Engineering both in Racine. After moving back to the Prairie du Chien area he worked at the Piggly Wiggly and Wyalusing Academy. Although many will remember Bill as owning and operating the Bait Shanty in Prairie du Chien which in later years was known as Willy and Nelly's Bait Shop, for 23 years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Janet Smethurst of Prairie du Chien, a daughter Julie Daniels of La Crosse, and a granddaughter Jackie Daniels of Onalaska. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Mary Smethurst.

MAXINE WOLF
Maxine L. Wolf, 78, of rural Coon Valley, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Maxine lost her courageous battle with cancer and went to be with the angels and her cherished son, Denton on Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse.
Maxine was born at home on January 18, 1928, to Edward and Lydia Fuller in rural Bagley, the 5th of 13 children and grew up in a close family. Many childhood days were spent helping her father on the family farm, roller skating and ice skating and attending the one room school near her home with her many brothers and sisters. School years were spent in Bagley and in high school, Maxine was crowned queen of the Villa Louis. As an adventurous youth, she traveled to the big city of Chicago with sister Irene, looking for her fortune. She had such an independent spirit!
After training to become a nurse she worked for a time at the Beaumont Hospital in Prairie du Chien where she had the special honor of being a nurse to the only one of her siblings born in a hospital, newborn brother Gary with whom she shared a special bond throughout their lives. She was a much loved and cherished sister to all of her siblings.
In 1945, Maxine met the love of her life, Herb Wolf, in Prairie du Chien and they were later married in Racine, on December 22, 1946. This was the beginning of almost 60 years of enduring love and constant companionship. Rarely did you ever see one without the other. They made their home in Racine, for the next 39 years.
Of this precious loving union came three children, Denton, April and Kendra. Maxine spent many happy years as a homemaker and raising children. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, fishing and camping. In their later years, Maxine and Herb enjoyed long rides and trips to Goose Island and visiting with their many friends. After retiring in 1984, they moved to Coon Valley where they made their home for the last 22 years.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Herbert of Coon Valley; daughters April Taulbee (Dan Cromwell) of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kendra Wolf (Joe Guerrero) of Portland, Oregon; two grandchildren, Christopher (Krysta) Taulbee and their children Ryan and Madyson; and Carolyn Taulbee, all of Oklahoma City; two brothers, five sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Denton Wolf; her parents; three brothers, Earl, Robert and Leo Fuller and one sister, Betty Jane; and infant sibling twins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley, Rev. Dan Wollman and Rev. Martha Butzier will officiate with burial in Bagley Cemetery. HARRY GORDON
Harry E. Gordon, 92, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 20, 1914, in Arlington, Iowa, son of Lou and Emma (Hyde) Gordon. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II.
He married Josephine Kirschbaum on November 9, 1946. He farmed much of his life near Brodtville, Patch Grove, Prairie du Chien and Seneca. Harry also worked at Lyon's Bar and Design Homes in recent years. He loved horses.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Josephine Gordon of Prairie du Chien; a son Francis (Sandy) Gordon of Janesville, two daughters, Shirley (Duane) Esser and Kay Day both of Prairie du Chien; a sister Mildred Gordon of McGregor, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, a brother Russell and two sisters, Hazel Posten and Cora Gordon.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family.

JUNE DAVIES
June M. Davies, 79, of McGregor Iowa died Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at her home in rural McGregor.
June was born in McGregor on March 11, 1927, to Benjamin and Meda (Zahn) Schultz.
She married Charles Davies on May 02, 1953, at First Congregational Church in McGregor.
Early in her life she worked at McGregor Electronics, she had retired from G and G Living Center in Guttenberg as a Health Care Giver, most of her life she helped her husband farm. She loved collecting antiques and spending time with her grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held Monday at First Congregational Church in McGregor with Pastor William Gentry officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor. The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor assisted the family.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years Charles Davies of McGregor; one son, Ben (Brenda) Davies of McGregor; three granddaughters, Ashley, Bobbi and Samantha of McGregor; two siblings, John (Barb)Schultz of McGregor, Virginia Faktor of Plymouth, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Delores Schultz of McGregor. June was preceded in death by her parents, a son Scott, a brother Robert, a sister Mary Nesbitt.

EDWARD BEDWARD
Edward L. Bedward, 82 of Woodman, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2006, at the Boscobel Area Health Care in Boscobel.
He was born on December 14, 1923, in Millville Township Grant County the son of George and Cora (Dailey) Bedward.
He married Martha Scholbrock on September 25, 1946, in Calmar Iowa. He farmed for 17 years in Steuben and later worked for Milk Specialties in Boscobel for over 25 years. After retiring he spent retired years devoted and caring for his wife Martha for 60 years.
He is survived by his wife Martha of Woodman; eight sons, Dale (Madeline) Bedward of Michigan, Gene (Donna) Bedward of Prairie du Chien, Carl Bedward and Cheryl Elliott both of Blue River, Allen Bedward and Luanne Brown both of De Soto, Larry (Nancy) Bedward of Woodman, David (Lori) Bedward of Bridgeport, John Bedward and Romma Bash of Woodman, Ben (Debbie) Bedward of Wauzeka; one Daughter, Sharon (Darryl) Bedward of Wauzeka. He was preceded in death by a son William Ray Bedward, two grandsons, Jason Bedward and Brian Bedward.
A memorial gathering was held on Sunday at the Village Hall in Woodman. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at the Hermitage cemetery in Mt. Hope. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Woodman first responders or the Woodman Village park. The Kendall Funeral Service in Boscobel assisted the family.

RAYMOND OLSON
Raymond Jean Olson, 44, of Viroqua, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, October 1, 2006.
He was born December 14, 1961, to William and Karla (Schultheis) Olson in Frankfurt Germany.
Raymond was a 1981 graduate of Viroqua High School and served in the National Guard from 1980 to 1985. When it came to having fun, Raymond loved the outdoors and working with tractors. He will forever be remembered as a loving and caring son, brother and uncle and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his mother, Karla Olson Shaw; his two brothers, Bill (Sarah) Olson of Readstown, and Norman (Jill) Olson of Steuben; three nieces and one nephew; and one great-niece and one great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, his step-father and his brother, Mike David Olson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, at 1 p.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker (Hwy 56) in Viroqua. Pastor Gary Wees will officiate and Raymond will be laid to rest at the Viroqua Cemetery next to his brother, Mike with military rites by Viroqua VFW Post #3032. Friends may call on Thursday after 12:00 noon at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua.

MARGARET ANDERSON
Margaret "Peggy" Anderson 56, of Boscobel, and formerly of Monona, Iowa, died unexpectedly Monday, October 2, 2006, at the Boscobel Area Healthcare Center.
She was born February 21, 1950, in Postville, Iowa daughter of Gerald and Helen (Connors) Wagner.
She had been previously married to Joel Brown in 1971 and later to John Anderson in 1988.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, who will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by two sons, Bill (Heidi) and Joshua Brown both of Boscobel; a daughter Amanda Anderson of Prairie du Chien; her mother, Helen Wagner of Postville, Iowa; five brothers, Robert (Joneita) Wagner, Kenneth (Cheryl) Wagner, James (Kathy Kutzbach) Wagner, John (Sara) Wagner all of Monona, Iowa and Dennis (Ann) Wagner of Eau Claire; the apple of grandma's eye Avery Jo Brown at home. She was preceded in death by her father, a nephew Seth Wagner and two infant grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien, with burial in the Monona City Cemetery, in Monona, Iowa. Friends may call on Thursday, from 4-8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, and at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.

DONALD HALVORSON
Donald V. Halvorson, 69, of Waterville, Iowa, died Monday, October 2, 2006, at his home in Waterville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Donald Victory Halvorson was born on July 18, 1937, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Victory Leiran and Ruby Erna (Jenson) Halvorson. He was baptized and confirmed at Waterville Lutheran Church. After graduating from Waterville High School in 1955, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1963 as an Airplane Mechanic.
On November 26, 1956, he married Launee Wood in Malad, Idaho. After the service they moved back to Waterville where he farmed with his parents in Paint Creek Township.
Donald drove school bus, hauled milk for the Waterville Creamery and was a manager for Bitumastore in Marquette, Iowa. He drove semi with his son Dave from 1989 to 1994 and for Moore Transportation in Prairie du Chien, until his retirement in 2000. He was also a certified lock smith. Donald was a full-time dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.
He was a lifetime member of Waterville Lutheran Church. Donald was a volunteer fireman and EMT for the Waterville Fire Department. He was also a member of Harpers Ferry VFW, Gods Country Touring Club and Snow Blazers Club. Donald enjoyed spending time in the outdoors especially fishing, hunting and gardening. He also enjoyed woodworking and welding.
Survivors include his wife, Launee of Waterville, Iowa; his children, Wesley (Sylvia) of Waterville, Iowa, Debbie (Jim) Mink of Prairie du Chien, David of La Crosse, Gary (Katie Russell) of Monona, and Casey of Mc Gregor; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger (Connie) of Marquette, and William (Linda) of Waterville. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Lynn Allen and a granddaughter, Kappriane Halvorson.

JAMES FEYE
Retired Senior Master Sergeant James J. Feye, 75, Kansas City (formerly of Cameron, Mo.) peacefully passed away Friday, September 29, 2006, surrounded by his loving family.
The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Jim was born in Wauzeka, on June 20, 1931, to John and Helen Feye.
He proudly served in the Air Force from 1949-1973 protecting our freedom in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
In 1952 he married Joan Carter, his wife of 54 years. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for Cartwright Van Lines for 13 years and then for the Cameron Memorial Golf Course.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandson, Matthew Feye. He is survived by his wife Joan; his son Lyle (Pam) Feye, Houston, Texas, his daughter Linda (Steve) Davidson, Kansas City; two brothers, Dale (Sadie) Feye, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Roger (Roseann) Feye, Eastman; a sister, Ruth Martin, Eastman, and his grandchildren, Kristina, Sarah, and James Feye, and John, Andrew and Joshua Davidson.

JUDY FRYDENLUND
Judy Frydenlund died on September 22, after a valiant two-year battle with what she termed "the great equalizer," cancer. Judy led a vital life filled with a passion for the things in which she believed and a grace evident to those she came to know. She died as she had lived ­ with courage, without complaint, and with more concern for the loved ones she left behind than for herself.
Judy was born on September 15, 1945, to Thomas and Ruth Porter in Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Bellaire High School in Houston, Texas, attended the University of Texas in Austin, and received her B.A. in History from the University of Wisconsin ­ Madison in 1982. }She married Gerald Frydenlund on December 31, 1973, in Milwaukee, and together they lived in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Houston, Texas, before returning to Wisconsin in 1980.
Judy's career at the Wisconsin State Capitol spanned over 25 years, where she thrived as a political problem-solver. She served as a Legislative Aide to Representative Fred Kessler and Representative Ed Jackamonis, who became Speaker of the Assembly, and lastly as Aide and Speechwriter for Representative Marlin Schneider, serving Marlin for 20 years.
Judy is survived by her beloved husband Gerald of Prairie du Chien; dear mother Ruth C. Porter of Houston, Texas; friend and brother T. William (Patty) Porter of Houston, Texas; brother-in-law John Frydenlund of Lancaster; sisters-in-law Karen (Gerald) Bouzek of Stoughton and Jane de Roussan of Madison; brother-in-law Eric (Betty) Frydenlund of Prairie du Chien; nieces Betsy Porter of Portland, Oregon, and Laura Ebady of Austin, Texas; numerous other nieces, nephews, and friends. Her friends and family will dearly miss her remarkable intellect, which enabled her to reduce the most tangled conversation into a succinct observation.
Judy wished to thank her caregivers, Julie, Betty, and Sandi for their friendship and support during the waning days of her illness. She requested no public service be held and no flowers sent in her behalf, but encouraged memorials to the UW Cancer Center in Madison or Prairie Hospice in Prairie du Chien. A private memorial will be held at a later date in Galveston, Texas.

WILLIAM PANKA
William "Bill" J. Panka, 78, of La Crosse, died Friday, September 29, 2006, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born to James and Gertrude Panka on October 13, 1927.
Along with his wife Norma, together they built Norma's Styling Center and ran the business as a team for thirty years. They were proud to sell it to Connie and Kevin Peter and now operate it under the name of "The Ultimate Salon".
He is survived by his wife, Norma of La Crosse, one sister, Patricia A. (Charles) Gutberlet of Wheaton, Ill. and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 So. 13th St., La Crosse. Rev. Lawrence Berger will officiate. LEO BENSON
Leo LaVern Benson, 81, Prairie du Chien, formerly of Elkader, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, following a long illness.
He was born November 11, 1924, in Highland Township, to Bert and Pauline (Fishel) Benson. Leo graduated from Elkader High School.
He was united in marriage to Florence Ogle. Three children were born to this union. They later divorced. He married Buelah Dunlap and she died in March 8, 2002.
Leo farmed for many years, was an antique dealer and in later years, he was a Florida Keys commercial fisherman. He loved spending time with his family and friends and his faithful dog, Sparky.
Survivors include his companion, Margie Goblet, Marathon, Fla.; three children, Diane Benson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Tom Benson, McGregor, Mark (Mona) Benson, Elgin; three step-children, Tony (Lucy) Dunlap, Fountain, Colo., Roger (Carrie) Dunlap, Decorah, Mona (David) Schultz, Luana; seventeen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Buelah and one sister, Ernestine Allen.

PATRICIA DURLEY
Patricia A. Durley, 68, of Potosi, died Saturday, September 23, 2006, at her home after an extended battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
She was born April 22, 1938, in North Lancaster Township, the daughter of Howard I. and Charlotte M. (Yoose) Knapp.
She married William W. Durley on February 18, 1953, in Galena, Ill. Music was Pat's passion, and in addition to playing the piano, she also sang in numerous church choirs. She was a vocal soloist for many weddings, funerals, and special events in Southern Wisconsin, Central Illinois, and Central Florida.
Pat was a member of the National Board of Realtors and served on the board of directors for the YWCA of Canton, Ill.
Pat attended Spoon River College in Canton, Ill. and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha. She most recently worked as an international division customer service administrator with the J.I. Case Company in Racine
She is survived by her husband, William Durley, Potosi; their children: Kathy Scheetz (Dennis Freiheit), Dallas, Texas, Cheryl (Frank) Duvall, Hanover Park, Ill.; Randal (Terry Murphy) Durley, Leeds, AL; and Debra Durley (Danny Kohls), Prairie du Chien; her parents, Alfred and Charlotte Dressler, Potosi; and seven grandchildren, Trevor Scheetz, Joachim Durley, Shannon Peth, Avery Scheetz, Jacob Duvall, Katie Lambert, and Trisha Peth.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church in Lancaster with Reverend Doug Matheson officiating. Burial will be in Hurricane Cemetery, South Lancaster Township.

HARLAND KUTZBACH
Harland "Hap" Frederick Kutzbach, 80, of Farmersburg, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2006, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
"Hap" was born on May 31, 1926, to Henry and Elsie (Schlitter) Kutzbach at the family homestead near Farmersburg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and remained a faithful and active member his entire life. He served on the church council, as a funeral usher, and a key holder for many years. He attended Farmersburg Community School.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Moon on June 4, 1946. Three children were born to them: Karen (Wayne) Miene, Monona; Keith (Dixie) Kutzbach, Farmersburg; and Kathy (Jim Wagner) Kutzbach, Farmersburg.
Hap farmed the family homestead for twenty-five years, drove an LP gas route for Clayton County Farm Service and Elkader Co-Op for twenty-five years, was a groundskeeper, and "special needs" bus driver for MFL-MarMac Schools for ten years.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Shirley; three children, Karen (Wayne) Miene, Monona; Keith (Dixie) Kutzbach, Farmersburg; Kathy (Jim Wagner) Kutzbach, Farmersburg; his beloved grandchildren, Tom (Jacque) Miene, Wilton, Trent (Melissa) Miene, Farmersburg, Trace (Sherri) Miene, Monona, Stacie (Christopher) Bauerle, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Dr. Beth Kutzbach, St. Paul, Minn., Jill (Dr. Julian) Sanchez, Bettendorf; he was also delighted to know eight great-grandchildren: Steph Miene, Cedar Falls, Ashley Miene, Wilton, Autumn, Elizabeth and Esben Miene, Farmersburg, Kale and Landyn Miene, Monona, and Joshua Bauerle, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one sister, Lavon Kregel, Postville; two brothers-in-law, Dwayne (Inez) Moon, Luana, Vernice (Bev) Moon, Monona; one sister-in-law: Darlene Moon, Monona; and many relatives and friends. GENE SHEAHAN
Gene Sheahan, 85, of Dover Township, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at his home.
He was born February 21, 1921, to Daniel and Mary (nee Schuler) Sheahan on the family farm in Caledonia. He spent his early life and received his education in Caledonia and Raymond.
On September 20, 1941, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Wilmot, he was united in marriage to Lucille Burns. Following marriage Gene and Lucille resided in Bristol, Paris and Brighton. They have been residents of Dover Township since 1958.
Gene was the owner and operator of his trucking company where he specialized in hauling hay from Wisconsin to the stockyards in Chicago. He then worked for ITT Industries, formerly known as Thorp Financial, where he set up heavy equipment auctions. Gene retired from ITT in 1981. He was a member of St. Mary' Catholic Church in Dover.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Sheahan of Dover Township; daughter, Sandy Sheahan (Fred Culbert) of Paris Township; son, Bill (Pam) Sheahan of Delavan, daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sheahan of Nelson, and son-in-law, Ray Brook of Racine County. He is further survived by 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Dan Sheahan of Sycamore, Ill., and Dick (Coletta) Sheahan of Sharon. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Cecelia, a son, Geno, two grandsons, Gene and Brian, four brothers, John, Joe, Frank and Bob and by two sisters, Catherine and Sr. Mary Electa.

ARLAYNE PETERSEN
Arlayne M. Petersen, S.F.O., 74, formerly of Kenosha and later of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.
She was born in Prairie du Chien on April 16, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Cyril "Bud'' and Lola (Gokey) Gaulke. She moved to Iowa five years ago. She attended local schools in Prairie du Chien, graduating in 1950.
On April 23, 1955 she married Glenn A. Petersen at Holy Name Catholic Church in Racine. He passed away in 1975.
She was formerly employed at St. Mary's Hospital in Racine, Walker Manufacturing and Kenosha Unified School District.
A member of St. Peter's Catholic Church she was a professed member of St. Paschal Baylon Secular Franciscans in Burlington, she had been an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and held various offices.
Surviving are a son, Alan W. (Mary) Peterson of Kenosha; three daughters, Carol A. Skeen of Ohio, Betty J. (Joseph) McBride of Elm Grove, Diane M. (Joseph) Hickey of Dubuque, Iowa; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one step brother, Jon, Beloit.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment followed at West Lawn Memorial Park in Racine. The Proko Funeral Home and Crematory assisted the family.

GERTRUDE LOVIG
Gertrude C. Lovig, 90, of Giard, Iowa passed away Wednesday, September 20,2006, at the Orchard Manor Care Center in Lancaster.
Gertrude Catherine (Wickersheim) Lovig was born September 22, 1915, to Grace (Schwieger) and Benjamin Wickersheim on the Wickersheim Homestead in Giard. She lived her entire life within one mile of her birthplace.
She attended rural schools and graduated from Monona High School. She took an art correspondence course after her high school education.
Gertrude married Conrad Jonas Lovig on March 10, 1936, and to this marriage three daughters were born, Claudette Diane, Suzanne Yvonne, and Annette Colleen.
Although Gertrude never "worked" outside the family farm, she created many paintings, commercial signs, artwork of all types and for a time presented chalk talks to area organizations ­ her most noted one being the Praying Hands. Her largest project may have been the mural she created for the Clayton County Fair's 100th anniversary, which depicted life when Iowa was settled until the year 1954. She also did oil paintings of the Monona area churches, which hang in the Freedom Bank Building in Monona.
She was a member of the Giard Methodist Church where she was an organist for many years, she belonged to the Giard United Methodist Women, Froelich U & I Club, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Monona Heritage Club. She and Conrad were members of the Garnavillo Camera Club and square danced with a dance group from the area. She and Conrad attended art classes and Gertrude also instructed various art classes at different times of her life. She enjoyed being with her family and following their activities.
Preceding her in death besides her husband Conrad and their daughter Annette, were her parents, two siblings who died in infancy, and a special aunt, Kathryn Wickersheim. Those missing her the most are daughters: Claudette (Paul) Benz of Anacortes, Wash. and Suzanne (Terry) Kaber of Lancaster; grandchildren Elizabeth Franklin and David Benz of Fremont, Calif. and granddaughter Ashley (Brad) Kittoe of Mt. Horeb; step grandchildren Craig Kaber of Marquette, and Shelly (Sean) Park of LaMesa, Calif.; Great grandchildren are Jeremy, Nicholas and Catherine of Fremont, Calif., Jonas and Esme' Kittoe of Mt. Horeb, Paige and Brett Kaber of Prairie du Chien, and Henry Park of LaMesa, Calif.
Mom was wonderful to come home to whether you were family or friend.
Funeral services were Monday at the Giard United Methodist Church, Reverends Dennis Gilberts and Mark Dieter officiating, with burial in the Giard Cemetery, both in Giard. The Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, assisted the family. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Giard United Methodist Womens Group.

DOROTHY MENG
Dorothy J. Meng , 62, of Prairie du Chien, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September 21, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 3, 1944, in Prairie du Chien, daughter of Robert and Lucy (Ward) Suck.
She married John Meng on February 24, 1963, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley. She worked at Countryside Nursing Home in Jefferson, for 13 years and later she and her husband owned and operated Meng's on Main in Bagley. She later worked for Airmark and Prairie Industries.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years John Meng of Prairie du Chien; two daughters, Jodi (Bill) Fischer of Prairie du Chien and Lori (Jim Roethel) Bernard of Ft. Atkinson; a sister Patricia Key of Prairie du Chien, a half brother Jim (Loretta) Jones of Center Point, Iowa; a half sister Ivanelle Casper of Ft. Myers, Fla., along with four grandchildren, Lukas, Hali, Dylan and Cory.
A Memorial Service was Sunday at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Mathison officiating.

MARIE KIRSCHBAUM
Marie Kirschbaum, 95, of McGregor, died Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien following a short illness.
Marie was born February 8, 1911, to Myron and Florence (Flexman) Bovee on Moody Ridge, Clayton County, Iowa. She attended the Moody Ridge country school.
She married Mark Daniel Wilson on September 16, 1929. They farmed in Wisconsin near Wyalusing until they moved to Florida for a short time in the 1960's. They returned to Iowa after a few years.
Mark and Marie adopted a son John Robert who was killed during combat at Kein Hoa, Vietnam.
Mark died on June 11, 1977. Marie later married John Elwin Kirschbaum on October 20, 1993. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2001.
Marie is survived by several nieces, who are locally, Doris Barrette, Joyce Nading, Evelyn Shulka and several nephews, and special friend Harold Landt. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, brothers, Roy, Edward, Arthur, Ray, Leonard; sisters, Mabel, Florence and Ethel and three infant siblings.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor. Friends may call Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

MARTIN STLUKA
Martin Albert Stluka, formerly of the Lynxville area, died Thursday, August 24, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, following a short illness.
Martin was born March 5, 1928, in Crawford County to Charles and Anna (Stluka) Stluka. He was raised on a farm overlooking the Mississippi River near Lynxville and lived there most of his life.
He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to watch the farm machinery and the old steam locomotives running past the farm.
He attended Leitner country school and graduated from Seneca High School in 1946.
He farmed with his parents and in 1951 was drafted into the Army and served in Korea with the 7th Infantry Division for almost a year. Following his discharge he returned to the farm and in 1959 he bought the machinery and livestock and rented the farm from his parents. After the death of his parents he purchased the farm in 1977.
Martin enjoyed restoring old farm tractors and watching old threshing machines. A friend and he build a 2/3 size steam tractor engine, which they worked on for several years.
In 1992 his doctor told him to slow down some and in 1994 he had an artificial valve put in his heart, and a pacemaker implanted in 1998. The same year he sold the farm and moved to a place near Boscobel.
Martin enjoyed old country music his favorite singer was Hank Snow and he enjoyed polka's and waltz's.
Surviving is a sister Cecelia Stluka of McFarland, a brother-in-law Tilden Kaup of Madison and many relatives and friends.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church with burial in National Cemetery with military honors both in Eastman. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien and one hour prior to services at the church.

J. EVERETT O'BRIEN
J. Everett O'Brien, 83, of Boscobel, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2006, at the Boscobel Area Health Care in Boscobel.
He was born on April 9, 1923, near Eastman, the son of Michael and Millie (Poulda) O'Brien.
He married Helen Olson on May 22, 1943. She preceded him in death. He then married Norma Lewig Mathews. He is survived by his wife Norma of Boscobel; two sons, Jan (Maria) O'Brien of Billings Mont., Hoyt (Betty) O'Brien of Boscobel; two daughters, Winnie (Bill) Halverson of McGregor, Iowa, Ricky (Gary) True of DePere; a step-daughter Carole (John) Mindham of Boscobel; 26 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; a sister Eunice Key of Eastman. He was preceded in death by a daughter Valerie, a granddaughter Jordan, a step-son Terry, one sister Hazel Eulgem along with two brothers Clem O'Brien, Lloyd O'Brien.
Funeral Services were held Monday at the Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel, Pastor Joel Oines officiating, burial in the National Cemetery Eastman.

MARION SCHUBERT
Marion Rose Schubert, 80, of Tonopah, Arizona, slipped away quietly on September 8, 2006.
She was born Marion Rose Moyer on April 25, 1926 in Prairie du Chien. She married Milton G. Schubert on April 26, 1947.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Milton; three sons, Steven of Eureka, Calif., Phillip of Garnavillo, Iowa and Michael of Sneads, Fla; one daughter Patricia of Tonopah, Ariz.; four brothers, Edward, Stan, Bernard, Carl and one sister Catherine. She was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a daughter.
A memorial service was held on September 13 at St. Joachim and St. Anne Church in Youngtown, Ariz.

FLORENCE ERRTHUM
Florence A. Errthum, 88, of Bloomington, died Saturday, September 16, 2006, at her home.
She was born September 23, 1917, in Gays Mills, the daughter of John and Anna (Doskocil) Mezera.
She was united in marriage to Alfred Errthum on January 11, 1939. The couple farmed near Bloomington, where they lived and raised their children.
In 1973, they moved to the village of Bloomington.
Florence was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington and was a member of the Christian Mothers. She loved to play cards and watch game shows. Florence really enjoyed sewing. She made gifts for everyone in her family and donated many hats, gloves, and other handmade items to people in need. She is survived by 12 children, Margie (Wayne) Palches, Roscoe, Ill., Jack (Nancy) Errthum, Manhattan, Ill., Betty (John) Fischer, Prairie du Chien, Pat (Jim) Schaefer, Platteville, Gary (Dee) Errthum, Columbus, Fern (Jerry) Bina, Viroqua, Dan (Judi) Errthum, Mosinee, Susie (Mike) Bina, Chetek, Barb (Neil) Elskamp, Chetek, Marilyn (Charlie) Wagner, Blooming Prairie, Minn., Mary Beth (Fred) Wellach, Juneau, and Tim Errthum, Middleton; 39 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Errthum, Boscobel; three brothers, Bill (Ruth) Mezera, Tennyson, Bob (Mary) Mezera, Des Moines, Iowa, and Edward Mezera, East Coast; one sister, Mildred Sprosty, Prairie du Chien; and her sister-in-law, Lorraine Mezera, Boscobel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; her parents; her son, Dick Errthum; her grandson, Brian Errthum; and her brother, Howard Mezera.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 4-8 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday morning at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Mary's School Endowment Fund in Bloomington. The Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.

GERALDINE McKILLIP
Geraldine McKillip (nee- Hinchon), a resident of Prairie du Chien for 80 years was born to eternal Life lovingly surrounded by her family at Ruth Hospice in West Allis on Friday, September 15th. Geraldine, 95, was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer (Shorty) McKillip.
She is survived by their four children, Tom (Sue), Waterford, Ruth (George) Burdey, New Berlin, Mary (late Richard) Pautz, Bonita Springs Fla., and Dolores (John) Sandleback, LaC rosse; seven grandchildren: Rob (Joanne) McKillip, Cedar Rapids Iowa, Maria (Tom) Sowinski, Muskego, Michael (Ann) McKillip, West Allis, Carrie (Larry) Wright, Union Grove, Julie (Mike Stimets) Burdey Austin, Texas, Josh (Cheryl) Sandleback, Jackson, and Sara Sandleback, Rochester Minn.; thirteen great-grandchildren Alyssa, Paige and Matthew McKillip, Brandon, Jordan and Carina Sowinski, Amanda McKillip, Jonathan, Erica and Patrick Wright, Felix Stimets, Ethan and Lindsay Sandleback.
Services will be held at St. John's Catholic-Church in Prairie du Chien on Tuesday, Father Jim Warosh celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery following the service.
Geraldine was born in Burt, Iowa, on March 30, 1911, to Thomas and Mary Hinchon and spent her early years in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. The family moved to Prairie du Chien when Geraldine was a freshman. Following graduation from Prairie High, she attended Platteville Normal School and received her certification to teach. She had fond memories of her teaching days in the one-room schools at Irish Ridge and Dutch Ridge Schools. Jerry was a proud member of the Retired Teachers' Association.
She married Elmer (Shorty) McKillip on July 2, 1936. He died in November of 1969.
Geraldine's life was filled with family and church. Jerry was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church doing whatever was needed cleaning the church, serving funeral and wedding dinners, soliciting funds, acting as group chair, working at the bazaar, making rag rugs, crocheting afghans to donate as well as making fudge and cookies for the many bake sales at St. John's School. She belonged to the Christian Mothers, St. Rita's Study Club and the La Crosse Deanery.
She considered her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren her greatest accomplishment! She attended piano recitals, ballgames, baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, graduations and weddings. She made many trips to the Villa Louis to feed the ducks with each generation and was always ready to play a game of Scrabble.
Geraldine lived in the family home from the time it was built in 1936 (and was proud to be a "lower town" resident) until 2000 when she moved to Brunson Assisted Living Facilities. During her five years there she made many friends among the residents and staff. In June 2005 the wind pushed her to the ground as she was holding the door for another resident. She broke her hip and struck her head. After surgery she spent time in Prairie Hospital and Prairie Maison Nursing Home but moved to Milwaukee where three of her children and many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren live. She had visits daily for 15 months and that pleased her even though she missed her dear friends in Prairie du Chien.
Memorials may be made to the Prairie Catholic Schools if desired.

JOHN HILL
John B. Hill 78 of McGregor, died Friday September 15, 2006, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa following a long illness.
John was born November 6, 1927, at the Hill Fishing camp in Clayton County, Iowa to Frank and Alta (Schultz) Hill. He graduated from McGregor High School in 1946 and served in the Air Force from 1946 top 1947.
He married Lois Schleff on December 31, 1946, she preceded him in death in 1980.
John worked as a commercial fisherman with his family, worked for the Milwaukee Railroad from 1943 until his retirement after 40 years. Also during this time he operated a boat landing business and his wife Lois and him operated Lois & Johnny's Bar in McGregor for several years.
He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in McGregor.
He later married Joyce Reed on March 16, 1986.
Surviving are his wife Joyce; a son Frank Hill (special friend Van Enlow) of Volga, Iowa; daughter, Sharon (Ken) Byers of McGregor; two stepsons, Terry (Judy) Tesar of Decorah, Iowa, Bill Tesar of McGregor; and a step daughter, Jackie McEwen of Elkader, Iowa; three grandchildren, Lauri, Jeff, Dawn and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at the First Congregational Church with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military honors, both in McGregor. The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor assisted the family.

LEON BEERS
Leon F. Beers, 70, of Steuben, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 4, 1936, in Centerville, S.D. son of Francis and Leone (Neis) Beers.
He served in the U.S. Army. He married Ann Gander on April 8, 1959, at St. Mary's Church in Gays Mills.
He farmed most of his life in the Steuben area and enjoyed his job of driving school bus for the Wauzeka and Prairie du Chien School Districts. In recent years he worked for the Isle of Capri in Marquette, and Richardson's Trucking of Boscobel . He enjoyed being a member of the Steuben Community, traveling and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann Beers of Steuben; two sons, Bradley and Kirk (Jennifer) both of Steuben, a daughter Darcy (Ronald) Mohr of Prairie du Chien; a brother Loyde (Pat) Beers of Eastman, a sister Corrine (Joe) Fisher of Milton; five grandchildren, Zach, Kyler and Brooke Mohr and Ryan and Kayla Beers along with many nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in- law and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Cary and a sister Ruth Pickarts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Eastman, Rev Tom Huff officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Military Rites will be accorded graveside. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Monday, at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a prayer service at 8 p.m.

JUNE CHANDLER
June Elizabeth Chandler, 85, of Port Charlotte, Florida and former resident of Punta Gorda Isles, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at her residence.
She was born June 26, 1921 in Burton, and moved to Port Charlotte 21 years ago from Janesville. June was a Methodist and a former member of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Assn.
She is survived by her loving family, a daughter, Debra (Kerry) Glass of Portland, Ore.; three sons, Marty (Jill) Chandler of Janesville, James Chandler of Las Vegas, Nev. and David Chandler of San Diego, Calif; a sister, Leila (Earl) Beecher of Port Charlotte; and five grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lois Ahrens Dahlin of Prairie du Chien. She was preceded in death by her parents, Viggo and Velma Laugesen, her husband, Eugene E. Chandler, two sisters, Wilma Beecher and Janice Turner and a grandson, Nathan Chandler.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel, Rev. Douglas H. Zipperer of the Port Charlotte United Methodist Church officiated and inurement and committal services will be held at a later date in Lumpkins Cemetery, Glen Haven.

ARNOLD HENRY
Arnold C. Henry, 75, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, August 31, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after two and one half year battle with cancer. He was born August 23, 1931, in Prairie du Chien, son of Robert and Christina (Mezera) Henry.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Carolyn Kilburg on June 18, 1957, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman.
He worked in construction for a time in Madison, and later for Marhoeffer Packing and Anderson Electric both in Postville, Iowa.
Arnie has owned and operated Arnie's Refrigeration for the past 35 years and was a member of the Eagles Club in Prairie du Chien.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Henry of Prairie du Chien; three daughters, Cathy (Karl) McCullick of Boscobel, Sheila (Russ) Gillitzer and Judi (Greg) Kazynski both of Prairie du Chien; two sons, Steve (Becky) and Jeff (Jill) Henry both of Prairie du Chien; two sisters, Sylvia Blazek of Racine, and Ethel Mezera of Junction City; 14 grandchildren and an aunt, Mayme Quinn of Prairie du Chien. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Robert, and a brother Evert.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Military Rites were accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. The Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, assisted the family. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

DIANE MUNSON
Diane Tina Munson, 47, of Seneca, died unexpectedly at her home on September 24, 2006.
She was born February 13, 1959 to the late Clyde and Dorothy  (Irish) Lund in Lancaster.
She was a 1977 graduate of North Crawford High School.
Diane worked at Cabela's in Prairie du Chien for nine years and was currently a Supervisor in the Shipping Dept.
When it came to fun, Diane loved to spend time on the river, spend time with her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed her shopping sprees.
She will forever be remembered as a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother and dear friend and co-worker to many. She will be dearly missed.
Surviving are her two sons, Brandon (Nora) Munson of Wausau, and Chad (Traci) Munson of Gays Mills and her precious grandchildren, Jada, Stephen, Dayne and Andrew; her five brothers, Denny (Cathy) Lund of Viroqua, Doug Lund of Madison, Daryl Lund and Dan Lund, both of Gays Mills, and Dale Lund of Baraboo; one sister, Dayna (Zach) Polensky, Richland Center and her eleven nieces and nephews and four great-nieces. She is also survived by her fiance' and special friend, Ron Hees Jr. of Seneca. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and sisters, Darla Oates and Debbie Lund.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills. Pastor Pam Lojewski of the Luther Memorial and Our Savior's Lutheran Churches will officiate. Burial will be in the Gays Mills Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested as the giver wishes.

JOHN STEINER
John D. "Jack" Steiner, 70, a longtime general contractor of Prairie du
Chien, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in la Crosse following a stroke.
Jack was born January 14, 1936 in Prairie du Chien to Arthur and Kathryn (Rosenbaum) Steiner. He graduated from high school in Prairie du Chien in 1955 and served in the Army for three years as a medic in Germany.
He returned to Prairie du Chien and worked for Steiner Brothers Construction.
He married Mary Elizabeth Balk on February 7, 1959 at St. Gabriel's.
He started his own company Jack's Construction and was joined by his son Tom in 1993, which later became Steiner Associates.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus
