JOHN BELZ John Roger Belz lost his battle with doctors and entered into eternal life, reuniting him with his loving father Roger after a heroic battle with bladder cancer. This gruesome disease can rob you of your dignity, but not John as he fought it with determination, strength, class and most importantly with his brilliant sense of humor just as he handled all of the numerous obstacles life handed him. John came to the conclusion that God too had a sense of humor enduring 15 surgeries in five years and numerous procedures he was convinced the Nazis thought up. John was born and raised in Wauzeka and attended the public school system where he was involved in many clubs, organizations, band, choir, musicals, track, high quiz bowl and an honor roll student. John lived in La Crosse where he was employed by Erickson Bakery, Quillan Food and a bar manager. While there he met and became long life friends with many people, one in particular Irene (Mom Irene) Borneman. Words cannot express the love and gratitude we have for you. John loved you with all his heart. You and Julie (Thelma and Louise) must continue to visit. John then moved to Madison, to be closer to his family, and eventually went to work for Cub Foods. He cherished his job just as much as the many friends that he had met there, especially Deb Hazelbaker. Deb was like a sister to John and was at his side through every surgery, chemo treatment and many appointments and with family to the end. We all love you as our sister and always will. You can't get out of the family now. John was an intelligent person with a sense of humor that was second to none, but it was his love for people too, that made him so special. If everyone could be half the person that John was, with his ability to put other people first, to find humor in everything and the willingness to give the shirt off his back the world would be a perfect place, let us all learn from him. John is survived by his loving mother, Katherine of Madison, who we are all drawing strength from; and three brothers, Dan (Beth) of Fort Atkinson, Steve of Madison, a special brother who was with him throughout his illness and in his arms when he passed, and Tom (Deb) of Boscobel. John cherished all of you and truly knew how much love you had for him. One special sister and best friend, Jane of Madison. John and Jane were by each others side all their lives. The bond they shared, will continue on forever. His nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. John loved them as if they were his own children, Jessie, Brian, Hayden, Finley, Joe, Tina, Lauren, Evan, Lydia, Chris, Danelle and Little Owen, Kelly, Matt, Amy, Frank, Kristina, Collin, Brooke who was by his side throughout his illness to the end and Troy who formed a special bond with Johnny as a baby and gave John strength to fight in hard times. His adopted sisters, Mary Kornell and Shari Pero, Ruth Kornell, he adored each and everyone of you, please let him continue to be a part of all your lives forever. He was preceded in death by his loving father, Roger. A heartfelt special thank you goes to Dr. Frank Graziano "Dr. Frank". John always said there is Dad, God and Doc Frank, I think that sums it up, Dr. Sara Affelt and staff, he loved each and everyone of you. Sara (Degnan) Riccio thank you for being you and here for us, oh if things were different, think what could have been. He truly loved you. Cousin Ann (Hazen) Fienne, you are like a sister and loved like one. Chris and Ruth thanks for being there. John's dear friends, Mark Aulik, Kurt Mueller and Bruce Ritter, you define the word friend, just like John. Wade Richardson long time friend and roommate, you have been like a brother and family member. Dr. Claire Gervais for keeping Jane going, she couldn't have done it without your care. To all of the many visitors and people that sent letters, cards, prayers and numerous phone calls throughout the years. Thank you, that meant the world to John. Tracy Hanson at UW Pharmacy, thank you for your compassion and help. The Hospice staff, most importantly Deb Noell and Kathy Sutter, you will remain in our hearts forever. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5405 Flad Ave., on Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Jay Poster officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Sharon Pero, 909 Chapel Hill Road, Madison, Wis. 53711 to offset expenses. It was once said no man is ever gone until all the people whose lives he has touched are also gone. John (just as written for his father) will live a long-long time. John loved music and one song that he felt reflected his life was Both Sides Now. If you are not familiar with it, we encourage you to listen to the lyrics while you think of John. Together forever, your loving family. MARLENE ACHENBACH Marlene J. Achenbach, 73, of Eastman, died suddenly Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005 at her home.
