Center in Rapid City. She was first married to Harold Merwin Whitaker, who died
in 1966 after 32 years of marriage. In 1973 she entered into her second marriage
with Emil H. Wiese, who died of a stroke in 1986 after 13 years of marriage.
Helen Louise Bachman was born Sept. 12, 1909, in Odebolt, Iowa, to parents
George and Anna (Plautz) Bachman. Both George and Anna Bachman emigrated to the
U.S. prior to 1900 from Germany with their parents and were naturalized U.S.
citizens in 1902. She grew up on a farm near Beresford, S.D. and graduated from
Beresford High School in 1926. After getting a teaching certificate in Madison,
S.D. from Eastern State Teacher's College in 1927, she taught in a small country
school for two years. Following her teaching experience she attended Nettleton
Commercial College in Sioux Falls, S.D. from 1929 to 1931. Work during that time
was difficult to find. The college placed her in a position with three companies
of adjoining offices that shared her skills of bookkeeping, billing,
stenography, collection of accounts and secretarial work. After several years of
courtship with Harold Whitaker, she decided to get married. Her job would not
allow married women to hold her position. She and Harold Whitaker went to
Chicago, Aug. 20, 1934 to attend the World's Fair and to get secretly married in
a Methodist Church. They lived separately as single people after returning home
so she could continue with her job. Their parents did not know of their marriage
until 1936, when she quit her job and went to Rapid City with her husband. They
developed a heating, air conditioning, and roofing contracting business that
became known as Whitaker & Mattson. Housekeeping and being a mother became
her full-time occupation until the untimely death of Harold Whitaker following
surgery in 1966. She soon went back to work in the office of Whitaker &
Mattson with her son-in-law David Grow and nephew Myron Larson. On Feb. 14, 1973
she married Emil Wiese and moved to Luverne, Minn. Emil's first wife died of
cancer several years before his marriage to Helen. They had last dated in the
early 1930s. A massive stroke ended Emil's life in 1986. Helen returned to Rapid
City to be near her family in 1996. Her death occurred one month following
complications from a fractured hip and pelvis. During her life she was active in
church work, Eastern Star, and the United Commercial Travelers Auxiliary. She
