Good defense and solid fundamentals will be the keys to success for the River Ridge High School baseball team this season, said Head Coach Clay Koenig.
"We are fundamentally sound with a lot of potential," said Koenig, who also noted that the Timberwolves will need to overcome a lack of upperclassmen and the experience and leadership that they provide.
Providing leadership this season as the team strives to improve upon last year's 1-16 overall record will be returning letterwinners Collin Huge, John Winters, Paul Breuer and Kyle Johnstone.
Helping Koenig in preparing the Timberwolves for top conference rivals such as Potosi and Benton-Shullsburg will be Assistant Coach Matt Fencl.

"In order for us to be successful this season, we are going to have to score some runs on a consistent basis," said Head Coach Wade Winkers about this season's River Ridge softball team. "Without a bonified ace in the circle, we will not be able to rely on pitching and defense. Our philosophy has always been to play great defense and be quality baserunners, and that has not changed. We are just going to need to score more this year."
Winkers said that offense will be a strength for the Lady Timberwolves this season. "We have some quality hitters returning from a year ago, and hopefully they pick up where they left off and improve even more early on," he said. "The new pitching distance should also be an advantage to hitters as well. It will be interesting to see the difference in offensive numbers around the area."
River Ridge will need to overcome the loss of a shortstop, pitcher and catcher from last year's team. "Hopefully, we can find some people to fill those roles early and get them playing well by the time we start the conference schedule," he said.
Helping to lead the way for the Lady Timberwolves will be returning letterwinners Natasha Smith, Brianna Stagman, Jessie Mergen, Heather White, Mickey Breuer, Danielle Morgan, Stephanie Reuter and Tiffany Raisbeck.
Aiding the team in preparing for top conference rivals such as Belmont and Potosi will be assistant coaches RJ Osterhaus, Shannon Mumm and Stephanie Nemec.

River Ridge looks to repeat as champions

Members of the River Ridge High School boys track team are, front row, from left, Tom Osterday, Cody Witzig, Kevin Christ, Brett Stagman, Jeremy Cliff, Logan Irish and Zach Raisbeck. Second row, Assistant Coach Garth Osterday, Jacob Lindberg, Jake Martin, Derek Sprague, Roger Taylor, Jason Foster, Jordan Redman, Jonatan Rodriguez and Head Coach Shane Sperle. The River Ridge High School boys track team will be looking to repeat as conference champions, said Head Coach Shane Sperle.
"We should be toward or at the top," said Sperle, who noted that Black Hawk and Albany should also be top contenders.
The Timberwolves lost state qualifiers Garrett Knapp and Matt Floyd in the pole vault, Luke Moris and Matt Raisbeck in the sprints and Josh Bradley and Gaje Young in the distance races. However, River Ridge still has plenty of depth.
"We have good sprinters and have depth in the field events. We have good depth across the board, but our biggest weakness is in the distance events," said Sperle.
The Timberwolves have 14 returning letterwinners this season who will provide experience and leadership as River Ridge strives for the top of the conference.
Helping Sperle to prepare the Timberwolves will be assistant coaches Garth Osterday and Adam Gutherie.

The River Ridge High School girls track team will be striving for the Western Six Rivers Conference championship this season, said Head Coach Shane Sperle.
Black Hawk barely edged out the Lady Timberwolves last season, but River Ridge will be battling to reverse that outcome this year.
"We should be right there with them like last season when we lost to them by one point," said Sperle.
The Lady Timberwolves lost standout Bobbi Jo Meng to graduation, but they have 12 returning letterwinners to lend leadership and experience to this season's effort.
Sperle said that a key to success this season will be high scoring from the seniors. "We need seniors to score lots of points, like they should," he said.
Sperle noted that the team will need to overcome a lack of depth in the distances, but the Lady Wolves are strong in the field events.
