Five area athletes on to State Track Meet

Five area high school track athletes have qualified for the State Track Meet at UW-La Crosse Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31.

Deidre Dillman and Allysa Wellumson of Prairie du Chien qualified in Division 2. Garrett Knapp of River Ridge, Megan Marfilius of Wauzeka-Steuben and Holly Aspenson of Seneca qualified in Division 3.

Wellumson, a senior, placed third in the discus at the Boscobel Sectional Thursday to qualify for the State Meet. Wellumson had a toss of 106-3 to earn her first trip to State.

Dillman, a senior, qualified for State in two events. She finished second in the 400-meter dash and first in the 800-meter run. Dillman had a time of 57.17 in the 400 to break her own school record of 57.6, which she set last year. Dillman set a Boscobel Facility Record of 2:18.05 to win the 800. Dillman will be making her fourth trip to the State Meet. She is the defending and two-time State Champion in the 800-meter run.

Junior Garrett Knapp of River Ridge took second place in the pole vault at the Bangor Sectional with a vault of 12-0 to qualify for the State Meet for the first time.

Megan Marfilius, a junior from Wauzeka-Steuben, finished second in the high jump at 5-0 and will be at the State Meet for the second time.

Freshman Holly Aspenson of Seneca finished fourth in the 400 in 1:01.57 to qualify for State for the first time.

Co-valedictorians at Seneca High School

Seneca High School has co-valedictorians this year, Bill Oppriecht and Kristine Aspenson.

Bill Oppriecht is the son of Jerry and Diane Oppriecht of Eastman.

In addition to a stellar four-year academic career at Seneca, Oppriecht was involved in several extra-curricular activities. He was FFA President in 2007-2008 and FFA Treasurer in 2006-2007. Oppriecht was a member of the Dairy Judging Team, the National Honor Society, the Football Team for four years, Basketball for four years, Baseball for four years, Prom Court, Homecoming Court, S-Club, and Yearbook Co-editor.

Oppriecht said that he will attend UW-Platteville this fall and plans to major in Agri-Business.

Kristine Aspenson is the daughter of Rollie and Donna Aspenson of Ferryville.

Aspenson had an excellent academic career at Seneca and was also involved in numerous extra-curricular activities.

She was named to the Honor Roll all four years. She was Senior Class President, FFA Reporter, Prom Queen, Yearbook Editor, Badger Girls State Delegate, and National Honor Society President. Aspenson was also a member of the Math League, the Forensics Team (State Silver Medalist), the School Play, Homecoming Court, S-Club, the Volleyball Team (All-Conference Honorable Mention, Team Captain, Most Improved), the Basketball Team (Team Captain), and the Softball Team (Most Improved, All-Conference Honorable Mention, All Conference).

Aspenson said that she will attend UW-La Crosse this fall and plans to pursue a degree in Pre-Medicine.
