Two gymnasts are Statebound The Prairie du Chien gymnastics team competed at the Platteville Sectional Meet Monday night. Prairie du Chien placed third out of eight teams. Two Prairie du Chien gymnasts advanced to the State Meet to be held in Wisconsin Rapids Friday and Saturday. Terrilyn Farmer advanced on the beam, placing fourth with a score of 7.85. Brittany Sheckler advanced on the floor exercise, placing fourth with a score of 8.55. Sheckler also finished fifth in the all-around with a total score of 31.85. The top two teams in Division 2 at sectionals (10 in all throughout the state) advanced to the State Meet. The top five gymnasts in each individual event at the Platteville Sectional advanced to the State Meet. The first three gymnasts in the all-around advanced to the State Meet. City reports on snow removal efforts City Administrator Gordon Gallagher issued a report on the city's snow removal efforts following the weekend snowfall. Based on the overnight snowfall Friday night, the Council President requested that the Mayor declare a Snow Emergency from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Monday. Mayor Mader took this action early Saturday morning and immediately got on the radio to inform our citizens. An announcement was placed on the local cable channel letting people know that they should make every effort to have cars off of the street and that vehicles that remained on the streets were subject to being towed. The Police Chief, City Administrator and Street Department Superintendent met to discuss how to best communicate and coordinate the snow removal effort. Communication efforts were successful in minimizing the number of cars that remained on the streets. The Street Department requested supplementing the departmental resources with additional dump trucks (from Prairie Sand & Gravel) for the task of removing snow from the streets. The use of these trucks and manpower made removal of snow possible while still having our snow plow drivers working on their regular routes. All in all we received somewhere between 11.6 inches of heavy wet snow along with some rain and sleet mixed in. The water content for 72 hours (from Friday at 7 a.m. to Monday at 7 a.m.) was 2.17 inches. This is equivalent to over 30î of snow. The Street Department worked 3:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday and came in at 12 a.m. on Monday to continue to try to clean up. The complaints that we have received are mostly about two things: ´Snow plow drivers throwing snow onto already cleared sidewalks and/or driveways. ´Damaged mailboxes. Given the amount of snow that we received in the short time, I feel that the Street Department did an excellent job of responding to this storm. Also, the Water and Wastewater Departments pitched in taking care of alleyway plowing, sidewalks adjacent to public property, and other miscellaneous tasks. Thanks go out to everyone that worked to serve our citizens. We hope that we are providing the type of service to our citizens that exceeds their expectations in a manner that is cost effective. Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House, will speak at Lincoln Dinner Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, J. Dennis Hastert, will be the keynote speaker at the Republican Party of Crawford County Lincoln Day Dinner, to be held on Saturday, March 3, at Huckleberry's Restaurant in Prairie Du Chien. Special guests will include Wisconsin Attorney General, J.B. Van Hollen, State Senator Dan Kapanke (R-32nd), and State Representative Lee Nerison (R-96th). Congressman J. Dennis Hastert is a 1964 graduate of Wheaton (IL) College where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. He attended graduate school at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where he earned a master's degree in the philosophy of education in 1967. He taught government and history at Yorkville High School and coached wrestling and football, leading the wrestling team to a state title in 1976. Hastert began his political career when he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1980 and served three terms. He was elected to the U.S House of Representatives in 1987. Hastert was the 59th Speaker of the U.S. House Representatives and held office from January 6, 1999 to January 3, 2007. He was the longest serving Republican Speaker of the House in history. Congressman Hastert's policy agenda has focused on lowering taxes, improving education and strengthening Social Security and Medicare and supporting national defense. J.B. (John) Van Hollen grew up in northern Wisconsin where he developed an appreciation for the great outdoors, family and community. Although courted by several law firms, Van Hollen chose instead to begin a career in public service. J.B. began his career as an Assistant State Public Defender in Spooner, Wisconsin. In 1991 Van Hollen became a federal prosecutor as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin. In 1993 Governor Tommy Thompson appointed Van Hollen to the position of District Attorney in Ashland County. Nearly six years later, Van Hollen resigned to pursue other professional interests, but was called to service again when Governor Thompson appointed him to serve as Bayfield County District Attorney. Van Hollen was later elected to the position, enjoying bi-partisan support as the county's only elected Republican. Van Hollen received overwhelming support and endorsements from district attorneys and the law enforcement community from both political parties when President George W. Bush appointed him to the position of US Attorney for Wisconsin's Western District in 2002, the chief federal law enforcement officer for two-thirds of Wisconsin. Van Hollen was elected to the office of Wisconsin Attorney General in November 2006. He is the first Republican in the Attorney General's office in 16 years and was the only Republican in the country to win a statewide seat that was previously held by a Democrat. "We are very privileged to have Speaker Hastert give our keynote address. It is truly an honor to have him, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, Senator Kapanke and Representative Nerison all in attendance," said Linda Hansen, Chairman of the Republican Party of Crawford County and Assistant Chairman of the 3rd District Republican Party.
